Taenia solium Human Cysticercosis: A Systematic Review of Sero-epidemiological Data from Endemic Zones around the World.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium cysticercosis is a zoonotic neglected disease responsible for severe health disorders such as seizures and death. Understanding the epidemiology of human cysticercosis (HCC) in endemic regions will help to expose critical information about the transmission of the disease, which could be used to design efficient control programs. This review gathered serological data on apparent prevalence of T. solium circulating antigens and/or seroprevalence of T. solium antibodies, apparent prevalence of human taeniasis and risk factors for HCC from endemic communities in order to …

Epidemiology of taeniosis, cysticercosis and trichinellosis in Iran: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this review was to establish the current epidemiology of taeniosis, cysticercosis and trichinellosis among humans and animals in Iran by carrying out a comprehensive assessment of published articles reporting on these foodborne zoonotic diseases across the country. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline was used in the search for relevant published articles reporting on cysticercosis, taeniosis and trichinellosis in Iran using a number of appropriate key words. The search was conducted through PubMed, Web of Sc

The alpaca (Vicugna pacos) as a natural intermediate host of Taenia omissa (Cestoda: Taeniidae).

Three metacestodes were collected from the mesentery and the surface of the liver of three adult alpacas (Vicugna pacos) in a slaughterhouse located in Puno, Peru. Various features of the metacestodes were observed for morphological identification. A molecular diagnosis was performed by PCR-based sequencing of mitochondrial genes of cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (nad1). All metacestodes were identified as Taenia omissa by morphology and molecular methods The isolates from alpacas showed significant sequence similarity with previously reported isolat

[Epidemiology of cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis].

Within the genus Taenia, three species are human parasites: T. solium, T. saginata and a new uncommon species, T. asiatica, described recently in Asia. T. saginata and T. solium live as adult tapeworms in human intestines, where they cause taeniasis. T. saginata is widely present worldwide, in all regions where cattle are bred. T. solium is endemic in many countries where livestock and consumption of pigs are common. Cattle and pigs become infected by ingesting eggs emitted by humans into the environment and serve as the respective intermediate hosts of these helminths and host larval forms, o…

Human and porcine Taenia solium infections in Mozambique: identifying research priorities.

The objective of this paper is to critically review and summarize available scientific and lay literature, and ongoing studies on human and porcine cysticercosis in Mozambique to identify knowledge gaps and direct immediate and long-term research efforts. Data on the spatial distribution and prevalence of the disease in human and swine populations are scarce and fragmented. Human serological studies have shown that 15-21% of apparently healthy adults were positive for cysticercosis antibodies or antigen, while in neuropsychiatric patients seroprevalence was as high as 51%. Slaughterhouse recor

Discovery of taeniid eggs from a 17th century tomb in Korea.

Even though Taenia spp. eggs are occasionally discovered from archeological remains around the world, these eggs have never been discovered in ancient samples from Korea. When we attempted to re-examine the archeological samples maintained in our collection, the eggs of Taenia spp., 5 in total number, were recovered from a tomb of Gongju-si. The eggs had radially striated embryophore, and 37.5-40.0 µm×37.5 µm in size. This is the first report on taeniid eggs from ancient samples of Korea, and it is suggested that intensive examination of voluminous archeological samples should be needed for id

[Coenurosis in a sheep in Santa Catarina State, Brazil].

Coenurus cerebralis infection is commonly occurring parasite in small ruminants worldwide. A ewe showed head inclination to the left, equilibrium loss, impetuous movement to the high, falling in left lateral recumbency and recovering movement later. Seven days later, the animal remained in permanent lateral recumbency and nystagmus. Euthanasia was carried out and a routine necropsy examination was performed. A large volume was found on the right side of the cerebellum due to a cystic cavity, with approximately 1.5 cm of diameter and it was identified as Coenurus cerebralis.

[Efficacy and tolerance of trichlorophene in hymenolepiasis and taeniarinchiasis].

The paper deals with the clinical trials of the anthelmintic trichlorofen. The clinical and parasitological efficacy and tolerance of the agent for hymenolepiasis and taeniarinchiasis were studied. Twelve patients with hymenolepiasis and 5 with taeniarinchiasis were examined. Trichlorofen was shown to be effective in treating these infections, fairly tolerated and convenient for outpatient treatment. Eleven of the 12 with hymenolepiasis and 5 with taeniarinchiasis were cured.

Oral expulsion of Taenia saginata.

We report a 25-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain, vomiting and fever, and had an epigastric lump on examination. At laparotomy she was diagnosed to have acute segmental jejunitis. Three days postoperative, she vomited a 2-meter-long tapeworm (Taenia saginata), a rare route of expulsion.

A comparative study on egg hatching methods and oncosphere viability determination for Taenia solium eggs.

The efficiencies of an enzyme method and the sodium hypochlorite method in hatching eggs of Taenia solium (Henan strain) were compared. The viability of the hatched oncospheres was determined by staining with trypan blue. For the former method, the hatching rate and viability percentage were 85.7% and 79.7%, respectively. The corresponding figures for the latter method were 97.9% and 86.7%, respectively. These findings indicate that the sodium hypochlorite method is a simple, efficient and practical method for hatching eggs of Taenia solium.
