Neurobiological and behavioural studies of possible left hemisphere dysfunction in autism have generated conflicting results. Left hemisphere dysfunction may manifest in autism only in tasks that invoke executive functions. Moreover, left hemisphere dysfunction may underpin autism but not Asperger's disorder. We thus aimed to systematically investigate reports of anomalous lateralization in individuals with high-functioning autism and Asperger's disorder. Two of the tasks were sensitive to executive dysfunction: a serial choice reaction-time task and a Posner-type paradigm; the remaining tasks

A decade of advocacy for the inclusion of pregnant women in the clinical research agenda is starting to pay off. In September, the United States Task Force on Research Specific to Pregnant Women and Lactating Women issued its advice to the secretary of Health and Human Services on addressing gaps in knowledge and research on safe and effective therapies for pregnant women and lactating women. The task force is pushing for major reforms. If its recommendations are taken up, we can anticipate a significant shift in pregnancy research in the United States. This will affect pregnant women, clinici

Debate continues regarding the mechanisms underlying covert shifts of visual attention. We examined the relationship between target eccentricity and the speed of covert shifts of attention in normal subjects and patients with brain lesions using a cued-response task in which cues and targets were presented at 2 degrees or 8 degrees lateral to the fixation point. Normal subjects were slower on invalid trials in the 8 degrees as compared to 2 degrees condition. Patients with right-hemisphere stroke with neglect were slower in their responses to left-sided invalid targets compared to valid target

Students with learning disabilities (LDs) suffer from executive function deficits and impaired prospective memory (PM). Yet the specificity of deficits associated with different types of LDs is still unclear. The object of the present research was to compare subgroups of students with different forms of LDs (<25th percentile) on executive function and PM. Students with a mathematics disability (MD, n = 30), reading disability (RD, n = 27), both (RDMD, n = 27), or neither (typically developing, TD, n = 30) were evaluated on a set of executive functioning tasks (e.g., updating, inhibition, and s

Distributed sensing systems increasingly rely on geographically distributed devices that collect data under different operating conditions. Federated continual learning (FCL) enables a global model to be trained across distributed sensing clients whose local data evolve over time, while preserving previously acquired knowledge. Existing FCL studies have mainly addressed continual task evolution or class-based client heterogeneity, while federated domain-incremental learning has investigated adaptation to changing domains under a shared label space. Less attention has been paid to scenarios whe

ABSTRACT: Artificial intelligence (AI) has become firmly established in radiology, with most current applications relying on task-specific convolutional neural networks (CNNs) such as U-Net architectures for segmentation, detection, and classification. The emergence of foundation models (FMs), however, marks a fundamental paradigm shift. These large-scale, pretrained models are designed to flexibly adapt to a wide range of radiological tasks, often requiring only minimal task-specific fine-tuning. In medical imaging, FMs are typically trained on large, heterogeneous, and multimodal data sets a

This study investigated electrocortical dynamics of human walking across different unconstrained walking conditions (i.e., level ground (LW), ramp ascent (RA), and stair ascent (SA)). Non-invasive active-electrode scalp electroencephalography (EEG) signals were recorded and a systematic EEG processing method was implemented to reduce artifacts. Source localization combined with independent component analysis and k-means clustering revealed the involvement of four clusters in the brain during the walking tasks: Left and Right Occipital Lobe (LOL, ROL), Posterior Parietal Cortex (PPC), and Centr

BACKGROUND: Adolescent social stress is associated with increased incidence of mental illnesses in adulthood that are characterized by deficits in cognitive focus and flexibility. Such enhanced vulnerability may be due to psychosocial stress-induced disruption of the developing mesocortical dopamine system, which plays a fundamental role in facilitating complex cognitive processes such as spatial working memory. Adolescent rats exposed to repeated social defeat as a model of social stress develop dopaminergic hypofunction in the medial prefrontal cortex as adults. To evaluate a direct link bet

Cognitive flexibility, the ability to adapt behavioral strategies based on changing circumstances, is deficient in patients with certain neuropsychiatric disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. Cognitive flexibility can be measured in humans and animal models using attentional set-shifting tasks, which require activity of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and other key brain regions. We demonstrate that C1QL3, a protein involved in regulating excitatory synapse density in the PFC and other brain circuits, is important for attentional set-shifting, using a mouse model of C1ql3

Ensemble perception refers to the ability to extract summary statistics (e.g., mean, variance) from groups of similar objects. In some ensemble perception tasks, participants must select specific items from a set before calculating a summary statistic (e.g., the average size of red circles among blue ones). It is generally assumed that this selection process does not alter the ability being measured. However, research in working memory suggests that introducing selection into tasks can shift the focus of what is measured-from working memory capacity to attention control. In this study, we exam

Adaptive decision making affords the animal the ability to respond quickly to changes in a dynamic environment: one in which attentional demands, cost or effort to procure the reward, and reward contingencies change frequently. The more flexible the organism is in adapting choice behavior, the more command and success the organism has in navigating its environment. Maladaptive decision making is at the heart of much neuropsychiatric disease, including addiction. Thus, a better understanding of the mechanisms that underlie normal, adaptive decision making helps achieve a better understanding of

This study compares dynamic stability between individuals with obesity and those of normal weight. Participants performed audiomotor synchronization tasks involving a metronome with sudden phase shifts, both while walking and during finger tapping. The aim was to assess how these perturbations affected participants’ ability to synchronize their movements with auditory beats. Resynchronization was evaluated using the beat–movement relative phase, which quantifies the temporal discrepancy between the auditory cue and the corresponding motor event. The return to a stable relative phase following

Continuous motor tasks like walking have the potential to allow a dynamic allocation of processing resources when interrupted by intermittent cognitive tasks. The degree to which a successful interleaving of processing streams of both tasks is possible may depend on the temporal regularity of events. Fifteen subjects participated in an experiment where we systematically manipulated the regularity of stimulus onsets in a 2-back task relative to the step cycle. We tested three conditions where stimulus onset was always synchronous to a defined event in the stride (right heel strike, left heel st

Catatonic schizophrenia can be distinguished from paranoid schizophrenia by prominent behavioral and motor anomalies. As demonstrated in recent imaging studies, behavioral symptoms may be related to dysfunction in the ventral prefrontal cortex. However, the neuropsychological correlates of ventral prefrontal cortical dysfunction remain unclear. In an exploratory study, we investigated eight patients with catatonic schizophrenia and compared them with 19 patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 26 healthy subjects. The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and the Object Alternation Task (OAT) served as mea

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is marked by emotional dysregulation, instability in self-image and relationships, and high impulsivity. While functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have provided valuable insights into the disorder's neural correlates, electroencephalography (EEG) may capture real-time brain activity changes relevant to BPD's rapid emotional shifts. This review summarizes findings from studies investigating resting state and task-based EEG in individuals with BPD, highlighting common neurophysiological markers and their clinical implications. OBJECTIVE: For youth with anorexia nervosa (AN), remission requires high caloric goals to achieve weight restoration, consumption of a wide variety of calorically dense foods, and reintroduction of eliminated foods. Family-based treatment (FBT), the gold-standard treatment for youth with AN, empowers parents to renourish their child and restore them to health; yet, parents often report struggling with shifting meal planning and grocery shopping behaviors to focus on nutritional rehabilitation and weight restoration.
METHODS: This proof-of-concept study aimed to modify a simulated grocery stor

Cannabis is the most used illicit drug in the United States. With many states passing legislation to permit its recreational use, there is concern that cannabis use among adolescents could increase dramatically in the coming years. Historically, it has been difficult to model real-world cannabis use to investigate the causal relationship between cannabis use in adolescence and behavioral and neurobiological effects in adulthood. To this end, we used a novel volitional vapor administration model to investigate long-term effects of cannabis use during adolescence on the medial prefrontal cortex

We studied patient JS, who had a right occipital infarct that encroached on visual areas V1, V2v, and VP. When tested psychophysically, he was very impaired at detecting the direction of motion in random dot displays where a variable proportion of dots moving in one direction (signal) were embedded in masking motion noise (noise dots). The impairment on this motion coherence task was especially marked when the display was presented to the upper left (affected) visual quadrant, contralateral to his lesion. However, with extensive training, by 11 months his threshold fell to the level of healthy

Brain plasticity was investigated in 14 Italian children affected by developmental dyslexia after 6 months of phonological training. The means used to measure language reorganization was the recognition potential, an early wave, also called N150, elicited by automatic word recognition. This component peaks over the left temporo-occipital cortex and its amplitude depends on linguistic expertise. N150 elicited by written words was measured both in dyslexic children before and after training and in a sample of matched normal readers during phonological, semantic and orthographic tasks. After trai

Executive functions are an important ability of human brain to program, regulate and control various cognitive processes; one of these processes is the voluntary task switching. However, the sex differences in this process are poorly studied. In our study, these differences were investigated in 70 healthy subjects (36 men and 34 women) aged 21-48 years by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and neuropsychological examination. During the fM RI study, the subjects had to shift their attention between two tasks (classifying figures according to their form or number). During neur
