BACKGROUND: Relevant evidence suggests that angiogenic factors contribute significantly to fibril matrix reconstruction following physical injuries to tendon ligaments. Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA), with its potent angiogenic effect, has been studied extensively, and its functional polymorphisms, including rs699947, rs1570360, and rs2010963, have been the focus of numerous investigations. Some scholars have explored the association between gene polymorphisms in the VEGFA and the risk of tendon ligament injury, but the findings are not entirely consistent.
OBJECTIVES: The purpo

BACKGROUND: Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) is an appealing osteogenic and chondrogenic growth factor for promoting tendon-bone healing. Recently, it has been reported that soluble vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor 1 (sVEGFR1) (a VEGF receptor antagonist) could enhance BMP2-induced bone repair and cartilage regeneration; thus, their combined application may represent a promising treatment to improve tendon-bone healing. Moreover, BMP2 could stimulate skeletal stem cell (SSC) expansion and formation, which is responsible for wounded tendon-bone interface repair. However, wh

PURPOSE: Anterior insertion of the supraspinatus muscle plays an essential role in rotator cuff tissue. We aimed to determine whether the distance between the midpoints of the supraspinatus central tendon and long head of the biceps tendon on a sagittal shoulder magnetic resonance imaging scan can help to preoperatively diagnose an injury of the anterior insertion of the supraspinatus.
METHOD: This retrospective study reviewed 103 patients with a full-thickness supraspinatus tendon tear: 50 patients with (injured group) and 53 patients without (intact group) anterior supraspinatus insertion t

BACKGROUND: Soft-tissue contractures about the shoulder in patients with brachial plexus birth injury are common and can lead to progressive shoulder displacement and glenohumeral dysplasia. Open or arthroscopic reduction with musculotendinous lengthening and tendon transfers have become the standard of care. The clinical function and radiographic joint remodeling beyond the first 2 years after surgery are not well understood.
METHODS: We performed a follow-up study of 20 patients with preexisting mild to moderate glenohumeral joint deformity who had undergone open glenohumeral joint reductio

INTRODUCTION: High energy distal radius fractures may cause significant soft tissue injuries. Dorsal displacement of median nerve and flexor tendons to dorsal compartment between distal radioulnar joint was an unreported type of soft tissue injury.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: 35-Year male admitted following fall from height diagnosed as closed distal radius fracture with dorsal displacement. The patient had no flexion and extension of all fingers with loss of sensation. Radial artery pulse was not palpable. Radiography and CT imaging revealed distal radius fracture with dorsal displacement with dor

REASONS FOR PERFORMING THE STUDY: Larger superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) injuries have a poorer prognosis than smaller lesions. During the inflammatory phase enlargement of the initial lesion is frequently noted, with biomechanical loading being recently proposed to play an important role.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of lower limb cast immobilisation on tendon lesion propagation in an equine model of surgically induced SDFT injury.
METHODS: Core lesions were surgically induced in both front SDFTs of 6 young mature horses. At the end of surgery, one leg was randomly placed in

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intensive eccentric exercise can cause muscle damage. We simulated an animal model of isokinetic eccentric exercise by repetitively stretching stimulated triceps surae muscle-tendon units to determine if such exercise affects the mechanical properties of the unit within its physiologic excursion.
METHODS: Biomechanical parameters of the muscle-tendon unit were monitored during isokinetic eccentric loading in 12 rabbits. In each animal, one limb (control group) was stretched until failure. The other limb (study group) was first subjected to isokinetic and eccentric cycl

The Benediction sign is a pathological hand posture that appears when a person tries to make a fist. It is characterized by the extension of the index and middle fingers, abduction of the thumb, and flexion of the ring and little fingers. Clinically, the appearance of the Benediction sign is closely associated with high median nerve neuropathy. However, in the following case described, a low-energy fall resulted in delayed presentation of a right distal radius fracture together with complete rupture of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendons to the index and middle fingers and flexor poll

CASE: A child with a severe degloving injury to the dorsum of the foot and ankle had segmental loss of the tibialis anterior tendon and toe extensors. A tendon turndown procedure was used, and the repaired tendon was covered with a latissimus muscle free flap to restore active ankle dorsiflexion. Details of the procedure are described, and active dorsiflexion and functional ambulation were restored.
CONCLUSIONS: The tendon turndown method is a simple and effective way to overcome segmental tendon loss of tibialis anterior and allowed restoration of active dorsiflexion in this case without rel

BACKGROUND: Although some radiographic evaluations of the risk of flexor tendon injury following fixation of a distal radius fracture are useful, these radiographic measurements are limited because of their inability to obtain three-dimensional measurements. We hypothesized that CT-based measurements would be more sensitive indicators for risk estimation than radiography.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the relationship between plate positioning and the incidence of flexor tendon symptoms based on postoperative radiographic and CT-based measurements in 99 hands that were followed up for

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of surgical outcomes of biceps tendon lengthening (BTL) surgery in obstetric brachial plexus injury (OBPI) patients with elbow flexion contractures, who had unsuccessful serial casting.
BACKGROUND: Serial casting and splinting have been shown to be effective in correcting elbow flexion contractures in OBPI. However, the possibilities of radial head dislocations and other complications have been reported in serial casting and splinting. Literature indicates surgical intervention when such nonoperative techniques and range-of-motion exercises fail. Here, we demonstrated a

Flexor tendon injury is a potential complication after volar plating of distal radius fracture. This article reports a case of flexor pollicis longus tendon rupture after corrective osteotomy of a distal radius malunion with volar fixed-angle plating. Thirty-three cases of flexor tendon injuries after fixed-angle volar plating and eleven cases of flexor tendon injuries after non-fixed-angle volar plating were also reviewed. The clinical presentation, injured tendons, type of the plate, causes of the injuries and preventions of this complication were discussed.
