The anterior thalamic nuclei consist of the anterodorsal (AD), anteroventral, and anteromedial nuclei, each of which are highly differentiated and may contribute to different aspects of various cognitive and memory functions. In particular, the AD is unique in that it is implicated in learning at the earliest stage of discriminative avoidance conditioning in the rabbit. To better understand the functional roles played by the AD in memory and learning processes, we analyzed the organization of thalamocortical projections of the AD in the rabbit, using the anterograde tracer biotinylated dextran…

Previous anatomical and physiological studies suggest that the superior colliculus sends integrated sensory information to the multimodal cortical areas via the thalamic suprageniculate nucleus (SG). However, the detailed distribution of rat tecto-SG axon terminals and SG neurons projecting to the multimodal cortex, as well as synaptic connections between these tectal axons and SG neurons, remains unclear. In this study, the organization of the tecto-thalamo-cortical pathway was investigated via combined injections of anterograde and retrograde tracers followed by light and electron microscopi

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to examine whether deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN), the globus pallidus internus (GPi), and/or the ventralis intermedius thalamic nucleus (Vim) was associated with making patients angrier pre to post-surgical intervention.
BACKGROUND: Secondary outcome analysis of the NIH COMPARE Parkinson's Disease DBS trial revealed that participants were angrier and had more mood and cognitive side effects following DBS. Additionally blinded on/off analysis did not change anger scores. The sample size was small but suggested that STN D

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has proved highly effective in the treatment for Parkinson's disease and dystonia. Presently, many types of dopamine agonists, monoamine oxidase B (MAOB) inhibitors, catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor or other antiparkinsonian drugs are being developed. However, it is still very difficult to medically treat motor complications associated with levodopa therapy. Surgical intervention using DBS was possible to stimulate the subthalamic nucleus as the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus improves the cardinal parkinsonian

We report a 61-year-old hypertensive man who underwent deep brain stimulation of the periventricular/periaqueductal grey area for the relief of chronic neuropathic pain affecting his oral cavity and soft palate. During intraoperative stimulation, we were able to modulate his blood pressure up or down, depending on electrode location. This is the first evidence that hypertension could be effectively treated with electrical stimulation of the midbrain.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp is a type of focal dystonia due to dysfunction of the pallido-thalamo-cortical circuit. The symptom is refractory to most conservative treatment, though botulinum toxin injection is generally used for symptomatic relief. As a surgical treatment of dystonia we performed stereotactic nucleus ventrooralis (Vo) thalamotomy for dystonic cramp of the hand.
METHOD: Eight patients (5 men, 3 women, age 26-40 yrs, mean 32.1 yrs) with medically intractable task-specific focal dystonia of the hand underwent Vo thalamotomy. Stereotactic target was chosen at the junction of the a

Movement disorders have been treated neurosurgically since the 1930s. Current diagnoses for neurosurgical interventions are Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, multiple sclerosis, and some dystonic disorders such as idiopathic torsions dystonia. By using stereotactic image-guided techniques, targets can be chosen to treat different symptoms: the ventrointermediate nucleus of thalamus for tremor; the internal globus pallidus for dyskinesia, dystonia, rigidity, akinesia, and tremor; and the subthalamic nucleus for all cardinal symptoms in advanced Parkinson's disease, including drug-induced h

The intralaminar thalamic nuclei (ILn) have been implicated as a critical site of pathology in amnesia. Lesions of the ILn have been found to produce behavioral effects comparable to benzodiazepine (BDZ) receptor agonists. We compared the effects of chlordiazepoxide (CDP), a BDZ agonist, and FG 7142, a partial inverse agonist at the BDZ receptor, in rats with thalamic lesions and in unlesioned controls. Delayed matching-to sample (DMS) performances were studied during treatment with ascending doses of CDP, counterbalanced trials with 2.5 mg/kg CDP and saline, ascending doses of FG 7142, and (f…

Previous studies have shown that the amygdala projects to both the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MD) and its cortical projection area, the prefrontal cortex (PFC). In this investigation rats received injections of different fluorescent retrograde tracers (true blue and diamidino yellow) into MD and either the lateral, polar, or medial PFC in order to examine the relationship of amygdaloid neurons with cortical and/or thalamic projections. PFC injections labeled neurons in the basolateral (BL), basomedial (BM), ventral endopiriform (EnV), and rostral lateral nuclei as well as the periamygdaloid

The present study is concerned with identifying brain mechanisms underlying a basic mammalian vocalization known as the isolation call. The call serves to reestablish contact of separated individuals. Adult squirrel monkeys were used as experimental subjects because the isolation call in these animals has been shown to be stable, well-defined, and readily elicited under experimental conditions. Bilateral, symmetrical electrocoagulations in certain parts of the tegmentum and core gray matter of the thalamus and midbrain variously altered the character and production of isolation calls, but had

We have studied the projections from the superior colliculus and the neocortex to the pulvinar nucleus in Galago senegalensis by using the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Injections of various parts of the pulvinar complex, both the inferior and superior divisions, both the tectorecipient zone and the nontectorecipient zone as defined by Glendenning et. al. ('75), produce labeled cells in the lower tier of stratum griseum superficiale. The distribution of labeled cells in the superior colliculus varies with the locus of the injection, indicating a retinotopic projection s

A 61-year-old hypertensive diabetic man awoke with a numb, heavy right arm and leg; symptoms progressed within 30 hours to a dense right hemisensory syndrome involving head, face, trunk, arm, and leg, accompanied by a right hemiparesis, involving tongue, face, arm, and leg with extensor plantar response, leaving him barely able to move the arm and leg against gravity. No impairment in alertness, memory, language, praxic, or visual functions was evident at any time. Improvement in motor function began in 24 hours and progressed to walking status by discharge on day 23. Eight days passed before

12 Japanese cases with marked thalamus degeneration are reviewed. They are divided into 3 groups. The 4 cases of the first group showed a relatively short clinical course. Neuropathologically, the lesions of this group are selectively severe in the thalamus, and olivocerebellar atrophy is also observed. Because of the significance of the thalamic changes, this group is called 'primary thalamus degeneration'. The cases of combined system degeneration and presenile dementia, such as Pick's disease, are described in the 2nd and 3rd groups. In the thalamus, the developmentally younger, and mediall

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established procedure for the symptomatic treatment of Parkinson's disease. Several deep brain nuclei have been stimulated, producing a wide range of effects on the motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Long-term, high-quality evidence is available for stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus internus, both of which uniformly improve motor features, and for stimulation of the thalamic ventralis intermedius, which improves tremor. Short-term data are available for stimulation of other deep brain targets, such as the pedunculopo

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a type of chronic cerebrovascular disease. Currently, revascularization surgery including direct/indirect procedure is recommended for symptomatic patients. However, some patients still respond poorly to the treatment or develop secondary symptoms.
CASE REPORT: We report the first case of an MMD patient treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) and thalamotomy. Symptoms of dystonia due to hemorrhage in the thalamus responded poorly to revascularization surgery, but were considerably alleviated by stereotactic neurosurgery.
DISCUSSION: Our case report pro

The volume-conducted responses of the lemniscal pathways to median nerve stimulation at wrist may be recorded on the scalp (far-field potentials). These positive far-field SEPs components are widely distributed on the scalp and their peaking latencies vary between 9 and 15 milliseconds. In normal adults a maximum of 4 far-field potentials (P9, P11, P13 and P14) may be individualized; two of them (P9 and P14) are constant. These SEPs were studied in two patients with lateralized somatosensory loss; one with a cervico-medullary traumatic lesion, the other with a thalamic infarct. These observati

The alterations of microcirculatory structures and of neurons as a result of chronic cerebrovascular disturbances induced by ligation of the left common carotid artery were studied on 56 noninbred white male rats. The objects of investigation were central links of vestibular analyser such as anterior vestibular nucleus, posterior ventro-lateral part of hypothalamus, sensomotor brain cortex. It was established that one-sided ligation of common carotid artery resulted in alterations in vessels of microcirculatory bed, in neurons' bodies, in synapses. These disorders were similar to oxygen-defici
