Effects of oregano extracts, alone or in combination with other biomolecules, on growth performances and parasitological parameters of broiler chickens challenged with Eimeria spp.: a meta-analysis.

Avian coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria protozoa, remains a major constraint in poultry production, prompting the search for alternatives to conventional anticoccidial drugs. Phytogenic feed additives, particularly oregano (Origanum vulgare) extracts rich in carvacrol and thymol, have emerged as promising candidates. This meta-analysis assessed the effects of dietary oregano supplementation, used alone or combined with other additives, on performance and parasitological outcomes in broiler chickens experimentally infected with Eimeria species. A systematic search identified eight studies publishe…

Natural bioactive formulations for biodegradable cotton eco-fabrics with antimicrobial and fire-shielding properties.

In this study, eco-friendly cotton fabrics with antimicrobial and flame-retardant properties were produced using newly developed bioactive formulations. The new natural formulations combine the biocidal properties of the biopolymer (chitosan (CS)) and essential oil (thyme oil) (EO) with the flame-retardant properties of mineral fillers (silica (SiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and hydrotalcite (LDH)). The modified cotton eco-fabrics were analyzed in terms of morphology (optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)), color (spectrophotometric measurements), thermal stability

Time-temperature superposition principle for the kinetic analysis of destabilization of pharmaceutical emulsions.

The time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP) was applied to the destabilization kinetics of a pharmaceutical emulsion. The final goal of this study is to predict precisely the emulsion stability after long-term storage from the short-period accelerated test using TTSP. As the model emulsion, a cream preparation that is clinically used for the treatment of pruritus associated with chronic kidney disease was tested. After storage at high temperatures ranging from 30 to 45 °C for designated periods, the emulsion state was monitored using magnetic resonance imaging, and then the phase separ

In vitro activity of natural phenolic compounds against fluconazole-resistant Candida species: a quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis.

AIMS: To evaluate the antifungal activity and to analyse the structure-activity relationship of eleven natural phenolic compounds against four Candida species which are resistant to fluconazole. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four different species of Candida isolates were used: Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candida tropicalis and Candida dubliniensis. The phenolic compound carvacrol showed the highest anti-Candida bioactivity, followed by thymol and isoeugenol. The obtained minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values obtained were used in a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) ana…

A simple and quick approach for the determination of phthalic acid esters in beverage samples using temperature-assisted hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction.

The quantification of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in food and beverages is crucial for assessing human exposure levels. In this study, an environmentally benign microextraction methodology was developed utilizing a thymol-butyric acid deep eutectic solvent (DES) for the sensitive determination of six PAEs in beverage samples. Through systematic optimization, the temperature-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (TA-DLLME) protocol achieved high enrichment factors (82.01-112.39) and extraction recoveries (66.94%-91.75%). Low detection limits (1.14-4.85 μg/L) were achieved, when coup…

Developmental Dynamics of Bioactive Compound Accumulation During Vegetative Growth in Thymus daenensis Čelak.

Thymus daenensis is a pharmacologically important species, as its monoterpene-rich essential oil exhibits strong antibacterial activity. Thi … crol was the dominant constituent at both stages (71.65% at 4 WPG and 72.82% at 8 WPG), followed by thymol as the second most abundant compound. Overall, the findings indicate that developmental progression is accompanied by coordinated changes in hormone levels, trichome morphology, and bioactive compound profiles under controlled conditions.

Gastrointestinal effects of Nigella sativa and its main constituent, thymoquinone: a review.

Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases affect a large number of people all over the world. Uncontrolled acid secretion and occurrence of gastric ulcers are common disorders of GI tract which pose serious problems to human health. Many synthetic drugs have been used to treat GI disorders but a definite cure has not been discovered so far and the available medications cause several side effects. Nigella sativa (N. sativa) (Ranunculacea) has several therapeutic effects which are attributed to its constituents like nigellicine, nigellidine, thymoquinone, dithymoquinone, thymol and carvacrol. Several benefi…

[Ranke and modern surgery in Groningen].

Hans Rudolph Ranke (1849-1887) studied medicine in Halle, located in the eastern part of Germany, where he also trained as a surgeon under R … fore and during operations. For the disinfection of wound dressings, he replaced carbolic acid with thymol as this was less pungent and foul-smelling. The rate of postoperative infections dropped to a minimum despite the inadequate housing and living conditions of the patients with infectious diseases. In 1887, at the age of 37, Ranke died after a brief …

Fatal large-volume mouthwash ingestion in an adult: a review and the possible role of phenolic compound toxicity.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of fatal mouthwash ingestion and review possible sources of toxicity. DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: Veterans … death. Nonalcoholic ingredients of this mouthwash are phenolic compounds (eucalyptol, menthol, and thymol), and large-volume mouthwash ingestion will produce exposure in the reported toxic range of these ingredients. CONCLUSIONS: When ingested in large quantities, the phenolic compounds in mouthwash may contribute to a severe anion-gap metabolic acidos …

Clinical Chemical Studies in Aleutian Disease of Mink.

Clinical chemical determinations were carried out on blood removed by cardiac puncture from 49 mink affected with Aleutian disease and 25 normal animals and the respective differences tested for statistical significance. Blood urea nitrogen, serum total protein and globulin, thymol turbidity, glutamic oxalacetic and glutamic pyruvic transaminases and amylase were definitely elevated in the affected animals whereas serum calcium, albumin and A/G ratio were depressed. No statistically significant difference was apparent between the two groups in the comparison of inorganic phosphorus, alkaline a…

A Preliminary Study of the Response of Microcyclosporella mali to Selected Essential Oils.

In Poland, the main causal agent of sooty blotch and flyspeck disease is the fungus Microcyclosporella mali J.Frank, Schroers et Crous, which is most commonly isolated from the spots found on apples. The aim of the paper was to study the effects of essential oils extracted from Greek oregano, thyme and costmary on M. mali. Analysis of the essential oils was conducted using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with a flame ionization detector (FID). The Greek oregano essential oil was classified to the carvacrol chemotype, while the thyme and costmary were classified to the thymol and t…

Ultrasound-assisted green hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents extraction of capsanthin from red peppers: optimization, kinetics, stability, and insights into extraction mechanisms.

Capsanthin is a widely used natural pigment, but its extraction with traditional solvents suffers from low efficiency and environmental pollution. To address these issues, this study employed ultrasonic-assisted hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (HDES) to extract capsanthin. The thymol: menthol (molar ratio 1:2) (HDES-3) was selected as the optimum solvent. The extraction process of capsanthin conformed to Fick's second law. FTIR and SEM analyses confirmed that hydrogen bond interactions between HDES components led to its formation. HDES-3 had the most obvious destructive effect on the raw mat…
