Apparent tick paralysis by Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) in dogs.

Certain tick species including Ixodes holocyclus can inoculate neurotoxins that induce a rapid, ascending flaccid paralysis in animals. Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the most widespread tick of dogs, is recognized as a vector of several pathogens causing diseases in dogs and humans. A single report suggests its role as cause of paralysis in dogs. This study presents the clinical history of 14 young dogs heavily infested by R. sanguineus (intensity of infestation, 63-328) in an endemic area of southern Italy. During May to June of 2011, dogs were presented at the clinical examination with neurologi

Annual number of generations and biology of non-parasitic phase of Rhipicephalus microplus in irrigated and non-irrigated pasture in a tropical region.

This study aimed to verify the number of R. microplus annual generations in irrigated and non-irrigated pastures compared to the constant ideal environment. It also sought to evaluate the biology of the non-parasitic phase of this tick for each generation in these different areas of pasture; assess the larvae population dynamics in the pasture of each tick generation, and evaluate the R. microplus population dynamics parasitizing cattle in non-irrigated pasture. In the field experiment, two sub-areas were subjected to artificial irrigation (IRRI-A and IRRI-B) with artesian water, while the oth

Defining the concept of 'tick repellency' in veterinary medicine.

Although widely used, the term repellency needs to be employed with care when applied to ticks and other periodic or permanent ectoparasites. Repellency has classically been used to describe the effects of a substance that causes a flying arthropod to make oriented movements away from its source. However, for crawling arthropods such as ticks, the term commonly subsumes a range of effects that include arthropod irritation and consequent avoiding or leaving the host, failing to attach, to bite, or to feed. The objective of the present article is to highlight the need for clarity, to propose con

Evaluation and comparison of the potential of two ferritins as anti-tick vaccines against Haemaphysalis longicornis.

BACKGROUND: Tick control is an essential aspect of controlling the spread of tick-borne diseases affecting humans and animals, but it presently faces several challenges. Development of an anti-tick vaccine is aimed at designing cost-effective and environmentally friendly protection against ticks and tick-borne diseases as an alternative to the use of chemical acaricides. A single vaccine from the tick midgut protein Bm86 is currently available for field applications, but its efficacy is limited to only some tick species. Identification of candidate vaccine antigens that can affect multiple tic

Spotted fever group rickettsiae in Dermacentor marginatus from wild boars in Italy.

Following the increase in wild boar population recorded in urban and peri-urban areas throughout Europe, the present survey aimed to assess the occurrence of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in wild boars living in southern Italy and in their ticks for evaluating the potential risk of infection for animals and humans. From October to December 2019, a total of 176 ticks collected from 93 wild boars andtheir spleen samples were molecularly screened for selected TBPs. Overall, all the wild boars were infested by ticks (mean intensity, 1.9) with Dermacentor marginatus and Ixodes ricinus being

Prevention of the transmission of Babesia rossi by Haemaphysalis elliptica in dogs treated with Nexgard®.

This experimental study aimed to determine the efficacy of Afoxolaner (NexGard®) to prevent Babesia rossi transmission by Haemaphysalis elliptica ticks on dogs. The study included three groups of seven dogs each. Groups 1 and 2 remained untreated, whereas group 3 dogs received NexGard® on Day 0. All dogs were infested by 50 Haemaphysalis elliptica adult ticks: Group 1 on Day 2, Group 2 on Day 28 and Group 3 on Days 2 and 28. The ticks were originally nymphs having fed on B. rossi infected donor dogs. Their infection rate, assessed by PCR, was 12.8% at Day 2 and 6% at Day 28. On Days 0, 7, 14,

Determination of a Discriminant Dose to Identify Resistance to Amitraz in Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (Acari: Ixodidae) from Mexico.

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l., is considered the most widely distributed three-host tick in the world and has medical and veterinary importance; the control of infestation is carried out with acaricides, towards which it can develop resistance. This study aimed to determine the discriminant dose (d.d) of amitraz to identify resistance in R. sanguineus s.l. larvae natives from Mexico and to evaluate its application in field-collected ticks. Engorged ticks were collected from naturally infested dogs residing in rural communities and were incubated for 25 days, and their proge

Molecular and functional characterization of Bm05br antigen from Rhipicephalus microplus.

Rhipicephalus microplus is a cattle-specific tick, causing considerable losses in the livestock industry. The identification of molecules responsible for modulation of host defenses during different parasite stages can help in the development of alternative methods, such as vaccination, to control tick infestations. Hq05, a protein of unknown function identified in the tick Haemaphysalis qinghaiensis, induced a significant protective immune response when used as a vaccine in sheep. In the present study, we investigated Bm05br, the Hq05 homologous gene from R. microplus. Besides H. qinghaiensis…

Notes on the biology of the tick Rhipicephalus bursa (Canestrini and Fanzago, 1877) in Israel.

The seasonal distribution of the tick Rhipicephalus bursa in sheep has been studied during one year in two neighbouring flocks of Awassi sheep in an enzootic focus of sheep babesiosis. Rates of tick infestation on the two flocks were very different. Pre-imaginal stages were found on the sheep during the winter months of November-March while adult ticks appeared in the middle of April and persisted until the end of July. First clinical cases of babesiosis in sheep were diagnosed 2 weeks after finding the first adult ticks. The pre-imaginal stages were found mainly in the pinnas while adult tick

Ectoparasites and other epifaunistic arthropods of sympatric cotton mice and golden mice: comparisons and implications for vector-borne zoonotic diseases.

Ectoparasite and epifaunistic arthropod biodiversity and infestation parameters were compared between 2 sympatric small rodent species, the cotton mouse (Peromyscus gossypinus (Le Conte)) and golden mouse (Ochrotomys nuttalli (Harlan)), in southern Georgia from 1992 to 2003. Because the cotton mouse is known to be a reservoir of more vector-borne zoonotic pathogens than the golden mouse, we hypothesized that it would be parasitized by more ectoparasites that are known to be vectors of these pathogens. Cotton mice (n = 202) were parasitized by 19 species of arthropods, whereas golden mice (n =

[Lyme borreliosis in dogs].

In a 2-year-old Bernese Mountain dog the diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis was made, using the criteria that are mentioned in the literature: seropositivity in the presence of the typical clinical symptoms, with infestation of ticks in the history. The usual therapy of amoxycillin or tetracyclines was inadequate and did not resolve the clinical symptoms, possibly as a result of a combination of initial corticosteroid therapy, the clinical presentation of the disease (mainly meningitis), and a presumed immuno-incompetence often seen in this breed. Intravenous treatment with amoxycillin finally led

The possibility of the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus linnaei) dispersing through veterinary facilities in urban areas.

Rhipicephalus linnaei is the most important tick infesting dogs in urban areas of many tropical and subtropical regions of the world, where it can complete its life cycle within human dwellings. This study evaluated the role of veterinary facilities (hospitals, clinics, pet shops) and green areas (parks, public squares) as sources of dispersal of R. linnaei to households. During February 2021-September 2023, we visited 34 veterinary facilities and 51 green areas within São Paulo city. In each facility we inspected the internal premises (waiting/reception, inpatient and exam rooms) for the pres

Ectoparasites of the Irish stoat.

A sample of 196 Irish stoats Mustela ermineae hibernica Thomas & Barrett-Hamilton (Carnivora: Mustelidae) were examined and yielded 2580 arthropod ectoparasites, including 1819 larval mites Neotrombicula autumnalis (Shaw) from a single host. Other ectoparasites recovered included lice (99% Trichodectes ermineae (Hopkins], ticks (mostly Ixodes hexagonus Leach) and four species of fleas. The ticks and fleas were considered to have come mainly from nests of other hosts. The flea species did not reflect the status of their usual hosts in the diet of stoats, but did reflect the stoats' use of their

Ticks, Amblyomma rotundatum (Acari: ixodidae), on toads, Chaunus schneideri and Chaunus granulosus (Anura: bufonidae), in northern Argentina.

This communication provides notes on 2 species of toads, Chaunus schneideri and Chaunus granulosus, infested with ixodid ticks, Amblyomma rotundatum, from the provinces of Corrientes and Formosa in northern Argentina. Chaunus schneideri is a new amphibian host record for A. rotundatum, a species previously reported to parasitize other anurans and also reptiles. We examined 74 ticks on 5 toads. All ticks were A. rotundatum; all adults were females, and all developmental stages were randomly attached to host body parts. Ticks remained attached to one of the toads for from 7 to 17 days after the

The Saharan antelope addax (Addax nasomaculatus) as a host for Hyalomma marginatum, tick vector of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus.

Tick infestation and pathogen prevalence in ticks infesting the Saharan antelope addax (Addax nasomaculatus) are factors that may constitute a risk for both human and animal health. In this study we describe season distribution of adult Hyalomma marginatum and analyzed the tick-borne pathogens and their seroprevalence in natural-living addax in Morocco. The results showed that addax is an important host species for H. marginatum adults. The seroprevalence of Bluetongue virus (BTV; 61.5-92.3%, n = 8/13-84/91), Coxiella burnetii (36.3-69.2%, n = 33/91-9/13) and Brucella spp. (0.0-4.8%, n = 0/50-

Cercopithifilaria species in dogs and ticks from Greece.

Filarioids of the genus Cercopithifilaria (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) are parasites of wild and domestic animals in tropical and subtropical regions being transmitted by ixodid ticks. Though this filarioid species have been studied in canine and tick populations in Europe, data on their species diversity and geographical distribution in Greece is scant. Thus, the aims of this study were to investigate the presence of Cercopithifilaria spp. in dogs and ticks across Greece and to assess the possible risk factors. A total of 500 skin biopsies were collected from dogs, while 508 ticks were collecte
