Recreational aquatic activities carry a significant risk of injury and fatality, with drowning being the primary cause of death. Although encounters with aquatic wildlife are usually accidental, they can occasionally result in severe stings or bites. Here, we present the case of a man in his early thirties who suddenly disappeared while swimming with seven others in the Gulf of Aden, just ten minutes after entering the water. Despite extensive search efforts, he could not be located. His body was recovered on the shore forty-eight hours later. The autopsy revealed a large, irregular, semicircu

Cathelicidins are central effectors of innate host immunity against invading microorganisms and represent a promising source of next-generation anti-infective agents. However, current understanding of both antimicrobial activity and immunomodulatory function within this peptide family remains incomplete. In the present study, a novel cathelicidin peptide, designated HR-CATH2, was identified from the skin of the Chinese tiger frog ( Hoplobatrachus rugulosus). The peptide consisted of 30 amino acid residues (GRCNLLCKAKKKLRAVGNKIKEIKNVVFNR) and adopted a highly amphipathic α-helical structure. Fu

Poor vascularization and infections hinder diabetic wound healing, posing challenges in therapy development. A multi-action approach incorporating Dicer-substrate small interfering RNA (DsiRNA) against the prostaglandin transporter (PGT) gene and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into a Pluronic F-127 (PF127) gel was developed. This study aimed to upscale AuNP biosynthesis using Lignosus rhinocerotis (tiger milk mushroom, TMM) extract and chitosan as stabilizers. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) optimized the synthesis with 0.6 mL chloroauric acid (HAuCl₄) and 4.4 mL TMM extract, producing upscaled

PURPOSE: Aedes albopictus, known as the Asian tiger mosquito, is an extensively studied mosquito species recognized for its rapid global expansion and its capacity to transmit a range of viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. In 2010, Ae. albopictus was observed for the first time in Tizi-Ouzou, Algeria, and since then has colonized all the northern part of the country until the semi-arid areas. The present study was devoted to the molecular characterization of Ae. albopictus in Algeria.
METHODS: A total of 20 selected mosquitos, originated from collected eggs in

The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Ocimum tenuiflorum extract against the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) following oral administration in vivo. The methanol extract derived from the extraction was sprayed into feed at a concentration of 0.0 %, 0.05 % and 0.1 %. The feeding trial was continued for four weeks, following which the shrimps were injected with WSSV and mortality was checked two weeks after the trial. The findings revealed that shrimp fed with extract had significantly improved (p < 0.05) growth parameters (weight gai

To investigate the influence of different grasping postures on the hand's skin deformation, a handheld 3D EVA SCANNER was used to obtain 3D models of 111 women in five postures, including a straight posture and grasping cylinders with various diameters (4/6/8/10 cm). Skin relaxation strain ratio ([Formula: see text]) and surface area skin relaxation strain ratio ([Formula: see text]) were used as measures of skin deformation between two landmarks and multiple landmarks, respectively. The effects of grasping posture on skin deformation in different directions were analyzed. The results revealed

Coloration is perhaps one of the most prominent adaptations for survival and reproduction of many taxa. Coloration is of particular importance for aposematic species, which rely on their coloring and patterning acting as a warning signal to deter predators. Most research has focused on the evolution of warning coloration by natural selection. However, little information is available for color mutants of aposematic species, particularly at the genomic level. Here, I compare the transcriptomes of albino mutant caterpillars of the aposematic wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis) to those of their

Parasite drug resistance presents a major obstacle to controlling and eliminating vector-borne diseases affecting humans and animals. While vector-borne disease dynamics are affected by factors related to parasite, vertebrate host and vector, research on drug resistance in filarial parasites has primarily focused on the parasite and vertebrate host, rather than the mosquito. However, we expect that the physiological costs associated with drug resistance would reduce the fitness of drug-resistant vs. drug-susceptible parasites in the mosquito wherein parasites are not exposed to drugs. Here we

Trichothiodystrophy (TTD) is a rare multisystem disorder, characterized by sulfur-deficient hair with alternating dark and light "tiger tail" banding on polarized light microscopy. TTD is caused by mutations in DNA repair/transcription genes XPD, XPB or TTDA, and in TTDN1, a gene of unknown function. Although most of the TTD patients are photosensitive, patients with TTDN1 mutations were reported to be nonphotosensitive. We followed a cohort of 36 TTD patients from 2001 to 2013. We describe five patients from four families with defects in the TTDN1 gene: four had no photosensitivity, and one p

Mosquito-borne virus infections, such as dengue and chikungunya, are continuously expanding their geographical range. The dengue virus, which is known to be a common cause of febrile illness in tropical areas of the Old World, is now widespread in the Americas. In most affected areas, all the four dengue virus serotypes have circulated. Recently, small clusters of dengue have been identified also in Southern Europe during the hot season. The chikungunya virus, initially restricted to Central Africa, where is a common cause of sporadic cases or small outbreaks, and Asia, where it is used to cau

Recently, the highly invasive Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, rapidly displaced resident populations of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti in the southeastern United States and in Bermuda. Although multiple mechanisms of competitive displacement have been hypothesized, recent evidence of cross-insemination between these species in nature and the sterilizing effects of male accessory gland products asymmetrically favoring A. albopictus in interspecific matings support a role for satyrization (a form of reproductive interference) to explain the rapid displacements. Because of the d

The intimate details regarding the coevolution of bats and moths have been elucidated over the past 50 years. The bat-moth story began with the evolution of bat sonar, an exquisite ultrasonic system for tracking prey through the night sky. Moths countered with ears tuned to the high frequencies of bat echolocation and with evasive action through directed turns, loops, spirals, drops, and power dives. Some bat species responded by moving the frequency and intensity of their echolocation cries away from the peak sensitivity of moth ears, and the arms race was on. Tiger moths countered by produci

Envenoming by the Stephen's banded snake (Hoplocephalus stephensi) is not usually characterised by neurotoxicity. The present study describes the pharmacological characterisation of hostoxin-1 (MW 6660 Da), the first neurotoxin to be isolated from the venom of the Stephen's banded snake. Hostoxin-1 (0.3-1.0 microM) caused concentration-dependent inhibition of indirect twitches of the chick biventer cervicis nerve-muscle preparation. The neurotoxic activity of hostoxin-1 (0.3 microM) was irreversible by washing, but significantly reversed by the addition of CSL tiger snake antivenom (5 units/ml

This chapter summarizes experiments which were designed to reveal how repetitive electrical stimulation of the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) recruits nearby hindbrain neurons into activity, such that locomotion can ensue in the tiger salamander, A. tigrinum. The MLR stimulus strength was subthreshold or near-threshold for locomotor movements to ensue. Such relatively weak stimulation of the MLR produced locomotor movements after a relatively long delay, which featured neuronal interactions in the hindbrain. MLR-evoked spike responses of single hindbrain neurons were recorded before loco

Rickettsia honei (also known as strain TT-118) has been detected on three continents. Originally isolated in Thailand in 1962 (and confirmed in 2001), it has also been detected on Flinders Island (Australia) in 1993 and in Texas (USA) in 1998. On each continent it has been associated with a different species of tick. The original isolate (Thai Tick Typhus strain TT-118) was from a pool of larval Ixodes and Rhipicephalus ticks. Later it was detected in I. granulatus from Rattus rattus. Its pathogenicity for humans has not yet been confirmed in Thailand, but it is possibly responsible for the Sp

Is the acoustic performance of the mammalian middle ear dependent on body size? We focus on the cat family, because of its qualitatively uniform (and distinctive) middle-ear structure, large size range, and the extensive data available from domestic cats which provide a framework for relating middle-ear acoustics to structure. We report measurements of acoustic admittance in 17 live adult ears of 11 exotic species, ranging in size from sand cat (3 kg) to tiger (180 kg). For low frequencies, the middle-ear response is compliant for all species and generally increases with size. The compliance o

Novel monoclonal antibodies that specifically recognize gamma-carboxyglutamyl (Gla) residues in proteins and peptides have been produced. As demonstrated by Western blot and time-resolved immunofluorescence assays the antibodies are pan-specific for most or all of the Gla-containing proteins tested (factors VII, IX, and X, prothrombin, protein C, protein S, growth arrest-specific protein 6, bone Gla protein, conantokin G from a cone snail, and factor Xa-like proteins from snake venom). Only the Gla-containing light chain of the two-chain proteins was bound. Decarboxylation destroyed the epitop
