Monitoring Multiple Deadlines Relies on Spatial Processing in Posterior Parietal Cortex.

Proactively coordinating one's actions is an important aspect of multitasking performance due to overlapping task sequences. In this study, we used fMRI to investigate neural mechanisms underlying monitoring of multiple overlapping task sequences. We tested the hypothesis that temporal control demands in multiple-task monitoring are offloaded onto spatial processes by representing patterns of temporal deadlines in spatial terms. Results showed that increased demands on time monitoring (i.e., responding to concurrent deadlines of one to four component tasks) increasingly activated regions in th

Differential roles for parietal and frontal cortices in fixed versus evolving temporal expectations: Dissociating prior from posterior temporal probabilities with fMRI.

The ability to predict when an event will occur allows us to respond optimally to that event. Temporal predictability can be either fixed (prior probability) or evolving (posterior probability), in which case it is dynamically updated as a function of the elapse of time itself ("hazard function"). We used fMRI to identify the brain regions involved in either form of temporal prediction, within a single experimental paradigm. Participants performed a cued reaction time (RT) task, in which the target appeared after one of four intervals ("foreperiods") that was either predictable (temporal condi

Robust Human-to-Robot Handover System Under Adverse Lighting.

Human-to-robot (H2R) handovers are critical in human-robot interaction but are challenged by complex environments that impact robot perception. Traditional RGB-based perception methods exhibit severe performance degradation under harsh lighting (e.g., glare and darkness). Furthermore, H2R handovers occur in unstructured environments populated with fine-grained visual details, such as multi-angle hand configurations and novel object geometries, where conventional semantic segmentation and grasp generation approaches struggle to generalize. To overcome lighting disturbances, we present an H2R ha

Does COVID-19 vaccination affect risk perception and adherence to preventive behaviors? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Since the COVID-19 pandemic onset, preventive measures (e.g., social distancing, hand hygiene, mask usage) and vaccines have been pivotal in mitigating transmission and reducing public health burdens. Although adherence to these measures, influenced by factors such as ventilation and exposure duration, has been extensively validated, their long-term sustainability faces socio-economic challenges. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between risk perception and adherence to preventive behaviors and conduct a meta-analysis comparing these behaviors in vaccinated versus unvac

Reported off-leash frequency and perception of risk for gastrointestinal parasitism are not associated in owners of urban park-attending dogs: A multifactorial investigation.

Associations between park use and infections with gastrointestinal (GI) parasites in dogs (Canis familiaris) have been previously observed, suggesting park use may pose risks for infection in dogs, and potentially, in humans. This study was conducted to establish the overall level of perceived risk of parasitism in dogs, the frequency of unleashing dogs in parks, and to determine if dog owners' risk perceptions of parasite transmission among humans and dogs are associated with the reported frequency of unleashing dogs. From June to September 2010, 635 surveys were administered to dog owners in

Perceived Risk of Binge Drinking among Older Alcohol Users: Associations with Alcohol Use Frequency, Binge Drinking, Alcohol Use Disorder, and Alcohol Treatment Use.

Despite the high prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking among older adults, little research has been conducted on the association between their alcohol risk perception and alcohol use patterns. Using data on past-year alcohol users aged 50 and older (N = 6693) in the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we examined the (1) associations between risk perception of binge alcohol use 1-2 times a week and alcohol use frequency, binge use frequency, and alcohol use disorder (AUD), and (2) the association between alcohol treatment use and risk perception. About 40% of past-year alcohol

Residents' expectations for new rail stops: Optimistic neighborhood perceptions relate to subsequent transit ridership.

Although complete street policies are proliferating, little is known about how nearby residents perceive and act on their new active transportation opportunities. We survey the same neighborhood residents before and after they receive a new complete street renovation with five new light rail stops. We compare Time-1 expectations to use rail with Time-2 evidence of rail use, based on both self-reported and objective GPS/accelerometer measures of ridership. We examine neighborhood perceptions of four groups, created by combining Time-1 expectations to ride with Time-2 ridership: No expect/no rid

Object Detection and Scene Perception for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles Using LM-JEPA.

This paper presents the latent model-joint embedding predictive architecture (LM-JEPA), a resource-efficient collaborative perception framework for connected and autonomous vehicles that integrates latent predictive representation learning with lightweight multi-modal reasoning. Autonomous driving in urban and highway environments requires accurate scene understanding under strict latency, energy, and communication constraints, limiting the practicality of large language model (LLM) and vision-language model (VLM)-based approaches in edge deployments. To address this, LM-JEPA encodes heterogen

Beyond Positive or Negative: Latent Profiles of University Students' AI Attitude and Their Career-Development Correlates.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be appraised simultaneously as useful, capable, threatening, and demanding. Yet research typically treats attitudes toward AI as a single favorable-unfavorable continuum, obscuring how these evaluations coexist within individuals. Using a three-wave, time-lagged survey of 379 first-year university students in China, we examined configurations of six AI-related appraisal indicators: perceived humanlikeness, adaptability, and quality of AI; AI use anxiety; awareness of smart technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and algorithms (STARA) as a career threat;

N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor hypofunction causes recurrent and transient failures of perceptual inference.

Perception integrates external sensory signals with internal predictions that reflect prior knowledge about the world. Previous research suggests that this integration is governed by slow alternations between an external mode, driven by sensory signals, and an internal mode, shaped by prior knowledge. Using a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over experiment in healthy human participants, we investigated the effects of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist S-ketamine on the balance between external and internal modes. We found that S-ketamine causes a shift of perception t
