The selectivity of a chemiresistive gas sensor comprising an array of single-crystalline tin oxide nanowires (NWs) is shown to be greatly enhanced by combined temperature and gate voltage modulation. This dual modulation was effected by a novel microsensor platform that consisted of a suspended nitride membrane embedded with independently addressable platinum heater and back-gate structures. The Lewis acid-promoted rearrangement of 2,2,3,3-tetrasubstituted 2,3-epoxy alcohols with several kinds of protecting groups was investigated. When SnCl4 is used as a Lewis acid, the reaction proceeds in a regio- and stereo-controlled manner to afford two types of carbonyl compounds selectively from a single 2,3-epoxy alcohol only by changing the protecting group of the alcohol. The method was then applied to the formation of two types of acyclic and cyclic quaternary carbon centers from the single compound in optically active forms.

The paper reports the tin(II) chloride catalyzed reactions of diazodiphenylmethane with the cis- and trans-1,2-cyclohexanediols and R,S-1,2-propanediol in 1,2-dimethoxyethane and the identification of the monodiphenylmethyl ethers formed. Triphenyltin 3,5-di-isopropylsalicylate, compound 1, is characterized by a maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of 20 mg/kg. Bis[di-n-butyl(2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylato)tin] oxide, compound 2, and (di-n-butyltin bis(3-amino-4-methyl-benzoate), compound 3, exhibit similar acute toxicities (MTD = 8 mg/kg) despite their lower in vitro activity, as compared to compound 1, against the two human tumor cell lines MCF-7 and WiDr. All three are inactive in vivo against L1210 leukemia in mice.

The environmental behavior of stabilizers is not known for all chemicals which serve this purpose and further investigations will have to be done for a better understanding. From the investigations carried out on a few representative compounds, which are known to reach the environment, it can be shown that at the low concentrations at which such products appear in the environment even chemically inert substances such as hindered phenols or tin alkyl compounds are rapidly degraded and completely decomposed under the combined action of light, water, and microorganisms.

The use of a simple, noninvasive, isotope scanning technique for the determination of relative portal blood flow and detection of portal hypertension is described. The authors present ten case reports with lung scintigrams in a format suitable for a self-assessment quiz. The first seven cases include perfusion scintigrams and the final diagnosis was established by postmortem examination. The last three studies include ventilation images (using nebulized Tc-99m tin colloid) and the final diagnosis established by nonradionuclide studies. The authors believe this quiz demonstrates the necessity for ventilation studies when using lung scintigraphy for a positive diagnosis.

A simple, non-invasive technique for measuring gastric emptying of a solid meal in clinical practice is described. Cooked chicken liver labelled with a radioisotope is used. An autopsy case of primary rhabdomyosarcoma of the liver in a 70-year-old man is described. The case could not be clinically differentiated from hepatocellular carcinoma. A mechanochemical synthesis of one-dimensional carbon allotrope carbyne model compounds, namely tetraaryl[n]cumulenes (n=3, 5) was realized.
