Role of trichoscopy in children's scalp and hair disorders.

Hair and scalp disorders in children may originate from the hair itself, scalp skin, or infectious causes and be congenital or acquired. The most common sign is alopecia, frequently brought on by tinea capitis, patchy alopecia areata, or trichotillomania. Sometimes less frequent and clinically more elusive conditions such as initial androgenetic alopecia, congenital triangular alopecia, or alopecia areata incognita may be responsible for hair loss. The noninvasive technique known as trichoscopy is being used more frequently, aiding in the prompt differential diagnosis and follow-up of many of …

Alopecia syphilitica, from diagnosis to treatment.

Alopecia syphilitica (AS) is an uncommon manifestation of secondary syphilis, with a prevalence that ranges from 3% to 7%. It is a nonscarring alopecia that can present in a diffuse pattern, a moth-eaten pattern, or a mixed subtype. Due to its low prevalence and similar presentation to other forms of alopecia such as alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, and tinea capitis, dermatologists must maintain a high degree of suspicion for prompt diagnosis. The diagnosis of AS is made by eliciting the patient's history, obtaining serologic tests, and examining histopathologic or dermatoscopic findings. …

The current status of antimycotics in the treatment of local mycoses.

The drugs used in the treatment of superficial mycoses include substances with an indirect affect on the organisms such as the keratolytics … ditions unresponsive or inaccessible to topical therapy, such as chronic superficial candidosis and tinea capitis. However, the treatment of onychomycosis, particularly affecting toe nails, is highly unsatisfactory. There is therefore an important place for new drugs and new methods of applying them in the treatment of superficial (local) mycoses.

Microsatellite markers reveal geographic population differentiation in Trichophyton rubrum.

A worldwide selection of more than 200 isolates of the anthropophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum were analysed using seven microsatellite markers. Fifty-five multilocus genotypes were recognized, allowing a subdivision of the species into two populations. Both populations reproduced strictly clonally, showed a different predilection on the human host (scalp vs foot) and displayed geographic differentiation. Genotypes of one population originated predominantly from Africa, whilst the second population showed a worldwide distribution excluding the African continent. Genotypic diversity was

Fungal infections of the skin in children.

Fungal infections of the skin in children are common and may mimic many other dermatoses. Diagnostic techniques are simple and inexpensive; Wood's light examination, KOH wet mounts, and preferably fungal culture should be performed on all suspected lesions.

Management of mycoses in daily practice.

The guideline recommendations, albeit founded on thorough reviews of clinically relevant literature data, are often not immediately adaptable to everyday life. Considering the marked heterogeneity of superficial mycoses, each of them requires specific management in a real life context; in all cases diagnostic confirmation is required with microscopic and culture examination. In tinea capitis oral therapy is necessary (minimum six weeks) and should be continued until clinical and, above all, mycological healing. In cases of tinea corporis, cruris or pedis, it may be necessary to associate oral …

Kerion Celsi in a Nepalese Boy: An Underdiagnosed Cause of Scalp Swelling.

Tinea capitis (TC) is an infection of the scalp and hair caused by a dermatophyte fungus. Typically caused by the zoophilic and geophilic species of Microsporum and Trichophyton, it remains the commonest cutaneous fungal infection in children. A 9-year-old Nepalese boy was evaluated in outpatients for multiple boggy scalp lesions for two months. Suspecting a bacterial etiology, the lesions were excised and sent for cultures. While bacterial cultures failed to grow, endothrix spores were readily detected in potassium hydroxide preparation and histopathology. Trichophyton tonsurans was identified…

Scabies and other skin diseases in pre-school children in Ujamaa villages in Tanzania.

A survey of skin diseases was carried out in pre-school children in five Ujamaa villages in Rufiji district and 532 children (5.3% of the total population) were screened. The results showed that scabies was the commonest skin problem affecting 31% of the children. Primary pyoderma and fungal infections were relatively less common and accounted for 7.0 and 2.4% respectively. Staphylococcus aureus, Group A beta haemolytic streptococci and Corynebacterium diphteriae were the commonest pathogeneic bacteria isolated from both infected scabies and primary pyoderma. Tinea capitis was similarly the co…

Preparation and Evaluation of a Microsponge Dermal Stratum Corneum Retention Drug Delivery System for Griseofulvin.

Griseofulvin (GF) is used as an antifungal to treat superficial skin fungal infections such as tinea capitis and tinea pedis. Currently, GF is only available in traditional oral dosage forms and suffers from poor and highly variable bioavailability, hepatotoxicity, and long duration of treatment. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to reduce the side effects of the drug and to increase the concentration of the drug retained in the cutaneous stratum corneum (SC) and improve its efficacy through the preparation of drug-laden GF microsponge (GFMS). The emulsification-solvent-diffusion…
