Zirconia-containing wollastonite ceramics derived from biowaste resources for bone tissue engineering.

Zirconia-containing wollastonite (CaSiO3) ceramics with partial substitution of zirconia (1, 3 and 5 mol%) were prepared using eggshells and rice husk ash as source materials for calcium oxide and silica, respectively, through a sol-gel technique. The effect of incorporation of zirconia on in vitro bioactivity, mechanical properties, degradability and cytocompatibility of wollastonite was studied. Bioactivity was evaluated by in vitro assay using simulated body fluid while degradability was tested in Tris-HCl buffer solution for different time periods (1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 d) according to the IS

Nanomaterial integration into the scaffolding materials for nerve tissue engineering: a review.

The nervous system, which consists of a complex network of millions of neurons, is one of the most highly intricate systems in the body. This complex network is responsible for the physiological and cognitive functions of the human body. Following injuries or degenerative diseases, damage to the nervous system is overwhelming because of its complexity and its limited regeneration capacity. However, neural tissue engineering currently has some capacities for repairing nerve deficits and promoting neural regeneration, with more developments in the future. Nevertheless, controlling the guidance o…

Additive manufacturing of an elastic poly(ester)urethane for cartilage tissue engineering.

Although a growing knowledge on the field of tissue engineering of articular cartilage exists, reconstruction or in-vitro growth of functional hyaline tissue still represents an unmet challenge. Despite the simplicity of the tissue in terms of cell population and absence of innervation and vascularization, the outstanding mechanical properties of articular cartilage, which are the result of the specificity of its extra cellular matrix (ECM), are difficult to mimic. Most importantly, controlling the differentiation state or phenotype of chondrocytes, which are responsible of the deposition of t…

Biocompatibility and hemocompatibility of efficiently decellularized whole porcine kidney for tissue engineering.

Whole kidney decellularization is a promising approach in regenerative medicine for engineering a functional organ. The reaction of the potential host depends on the biocompatibility of these decellularized constructs. Despite the proven ability of decellularized kidney scaffolds to guide cell attachment and growth, little is known about biocompatibility and hemocompatibility of these scaffolds. Our aim is to prepare decellularized kidneys of a clinically relevant size and evaluate its biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. Porcine kidneys were cannulated via the renal artery, and then perfus

Current Strategies for the Manufacture of Small Size Tissue Engineering Vascular Grafts.

Occlusive arterial disease, including coronary heart disease (CHD) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD), is the main cause of death, with an annual mortality incidence predicted to rise to 23.3 million worldwide by 2030. Current revascularization techniques consist of angioplasty, placement of a stent, or surgical bypass grafting. Autologous vessels, such as the saphenous vein and internal thoracic artery, represent the gold standard grafts for small-diameter vessels. However, they require invasive harvesting and are often unavailable. Synthetic vascular grafts represent an alternative to aut

Different Sources of Stem Cells and their Application in Cartilage Tissue Engineering.

BACKGROUND: The articular cartilage is unique in that it contains only a single type of cell and shows poor ability for spontaneous healing. Currently, approaches for treating cartilage defects include surgical and nonsurgical approaches, as well as cartilage tissue engineering. For standard cartilage tissue engineering, three elements are required, i.e., a scaffold, growth factors, and seed cells. With advancements in stem cell research, the main sources of cells for cartilage tissue engineering are embryonic and mesenchymal stem cells, which have been shown to be promising alternatives in re…

Laser surface modification of decellularized extracellular cartilage matrix for cartilage tissue engineering.

The implantation of autologous cartilage as the gold standard operative procedure for the reconstruction of cartilage defects in the head and neck region unfortunately implicates a variety of negative effects at the donor site. Tissue-engineered cartilage appears to be a promising alternative. However, due to the complex requirements, the optimal material is yet to be determined. As demonstrated previously, decellularized porcine cartilage (DECM) might be a good option to engineer vital cartilage. As the dense structure of DECM limits cellular infiltration, we investigated surface modification

Advances in Application of Mechanical Stimuli in Bioreactors for Cartilage Tissue Engineering.

Articular cartilage (AC) is the weight-bearing tissue in diarthroses. It lacks the capacity for self-healing once there are injuries or diseases due to its avascularity. With the development of tissue engineering, repairing cartilage defects through transplantation of engineered cartilage that closely matches properties of native cartilage has become a new option for curing cartilage diseases. The main hurdle for clinical application of engineered cartilage is how to develop functional cartilage constructs for mass production in a credible way. Recently, impressive hyaline cartilage that may h…

Impact of Age on Human Adipose Stem Cells for Bone Tissue Engineering.

Bone nonunion is a pathological condition in which all bone healing processes have stopped, resulting in abnormal mobility between 2 bone segments. The incidence of bone-related injuries will increase in an aging population, leading to such injuries reaching epidemic proportions. Tissue engineering and cell therapy using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have raised the possibility of implanting living tissue for bone reconstruction. Bone marrow was first proposed as the source of stem cells for bone regeneration. However, as the quantity of MSCs in the bone marrow decreases, the capacity of osteo…

Current State of Cartilage Tissue Engineering using Nanofibrous Scaffolds and Stem Cells.

Cartilage is an avascular, aneural, and alymphatic connective tissue with a limited capacity caused by low mitotic activity of its resident cells, chondrocytes. Natural repair of full thickness cartilage defects usually leads to the formation of fibrocartilage with lower function and mechanical force compared with the original hyaline cartilage and further deterioration can occur. Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine is a promising strategy to repair bone and articular cartilage defects and rehabilitate joint functions by focusing on the optimal combination of cells, material scaffolds…
