Celebrex offers a small protection from root resorption associated with orthodontic movement.

UNLABELLED: Tooth movement results from alveolar bone resorption/deposition following application of orthodontic forces, and root resorption can be an undesirable complication associated with this process. No treatment for external root resorption is available to date. OBJECTIVE: To determine if COX-2 inhibitors like Celebrex are effective in protecting root resorption associated with orthodontic forces. METHODS: A force of 80 grams was applied to the left maxillary first molars of 7-week-old female Wistar rats using nickel titanium closed coil springs attached to the cervical area of the in

Histological and histochemical quantification of root resorption incident to the application of intrusive force to rat molars.

This study was conducted to investigate the nature of root resorption resulting from intrusive forces applied to the rat lower molars, by means of histological and histochemical techniques with tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). Thirty-eight 13-week-old Wistar strain male rats were used. Intrusive force was created by a fixed appliance which was adjusted to exert an initial force of 50 g for the duration of 1, 2, and 3 weeks. The degree of root resorption and distribution of TRAP positive cells were evaluated. On the root surface, the TRAP positive scores were low in the apical region

Histomorphometric study of alveolar bone turnover in orthodontic tooth movement.

Selected histomorphometric parameters were measured in alveolar bone adjacent to rat molars treated with a 40-gram tipping force designed to tip the molar mesially and with a sham procedure. Undecalcified parasagittal sections of teeth and surrounding tissues were prepared for static and dynamic histomorphometry at 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 days. Initial tooth displacement was assessed by measuring differences between groups in the widths of the day-1 periodontal ligaments (PDL) at various vertical locations and correlating these using linear regression analysis. All parameters were measured in t

Cone-beam Computed Tomography: Anatomic Analysis of Maxillary Posterior Teeth-Impact on Endodontic Microsurgery.

INTRODUCTION: It is imperative that the endodontic surgeon be knowledgeable of the anatomic dimensions of the surgical site. If cone-beam computed tomography is not available because of location/cost, it is prudent for the clinician to consult a knowledge base for the surgical site. An understanding of the root thickness of maxillary premolars and molars at the preferred level for root resection (3.0-3.6 mm), bone thickness over these roots, and the proximity of each root apex to the maxillary sinus will help the surgeon before and during the surgical procedure. METHODS: Cone-beam computed to

Repair of extensive apical root resorption associated with apical periodontitis: radiographic and histologic observations after 25 years.

INTRODUCTION: Root resorption is a frequent finding in teeth with apical periodontitis. In cases of severe apical periodontitis, root resorption may involve not only cementum but also dentin. Resorbed tooth structures can only be repaired with cementum because stem cells in the periradicular tissues are not capable of differentiating into odontoblasts. This article reports the repair of extensive apical root resorption associated with apical periodontitis 25 years after treatment. METHODS: A 51-year-old man presented with pulp necrosis and symptomatic apical periodontitis in tooth #7. The per

Clinical survey of neurosensory side-effects of mandibular parasymphyseal bone harvesting.

The aim of the present survey was to assess neurosensory disturbances and/or tooth-pulp sensitivity losses after mandibular parasymphyseal bone-harvesting procedures. Twenty-eight harvesting areas in 16 patients were surveyed. Mucosal and skin sensitivity of the chin/lower lip, divided into four regions, were determined via Pointed-Blunt and Two-Point-Discrimination Tests. Pulp sensitivity of the mandibular teeth from the left second bicuspid to the right second bicuspid was tested by cold vitality preoperatively and 12 months postoperatively. Teeth were grouped according to sensitivity altera

Histopathologic Features of Pulp Following Uncomplicated Crown Fracture of an Immature Tooth With Concomitant Subluxation Seven Days After the Injury. A Case Report.

Reports on the histopathologic features of pulp tissue following traumatic injuries are scarce. The aim of the present clinical and histological report was to provide some novel insights about the histological condition of the pulp tissue of an immature permanent tooth, shortly after a combined injury of uncomplicated crown fracture with concomitant subluxation. A seven-year-old male patient presented with a localized buccal swelling apically on tooth #21 and with a radiographic app. One week earlier, the patient had suffered an uncomplicated crown fracture, and the referral dentist had solely

SCAPs Regulate Differentiation of DFSCs During Tooth Root Development in Swine.

The tooth root transmits and balances occlusal forces through the periodontium to the alveolar bone. The periodontium, including the gingiva, the periodontal ligament, the cementum and the partial alveolar bone, derives from the dental follicle (DF), except for the gingiva. In the early developmental stages, the DF surrounds the tooth germ as a sphere and functions to promote tooth eruption. However, the morphological dynamics and factors regulating the differentiation of the DF during root elongation remain largely unknown. Miniature pigs are regarded as a useful experimental animal for model

[Combined surgical-orthodontic therapy for compound odontoma].

Odontogenic tumor is a rare condition in dental medicine that mostly proceeds unrecognized until the occurrence of clinical symptoms such as delayed eruption, or is incidentally detected on routine x-ray examination. The exact cause is not known, however, previous dental trauma and infection have been postulated as the potential factors in the development of odontogenic tumor. The earliest possible operative extirpation of the tumorous growth is recommended to eliminate permanent tooth impaction and to enable normal growth of the teeth. In some cases, corticotomy, including complete removal of

Tensile testing of the mechanical behavior of the human periodontal ligament.

BACKGROUND: The periodontal ligament (PDL) plays a key role in alveolar bone remodeling and resorption during tooth movements. The prediction of tooth mobility under functional dental loads requires a deep understanding of the mechanical behavior of the PDL, which is a critical issue in dental biomechanics. This study was aimed to examine the mechanical behavior of the PDL of the maxillary central and lateral incisors from human. The experimental results can contribute to developing an accurate constitutive model of the human PDL in orthodontics. METHODS: The samples of human incisors were cu

Regenerative Endodontic Treatment in an Immature Permanent Tooth With Necrotic Pulp and Periradicular Lesion.

Managing necrotic immature permanent teeth with an open apex presents a treatment challenge. Regenerative endodontic procedures have emerged as biologically based approaches for these cases, suggesting an alternative to conventional apexification. This report describes successful revascularization of an immature mandibular second premolar with a chronic apical abscess. Following canal disinfection with NaOCl irrigation and applying a calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament, a scaffold was created by inducing a blood clot within the canal. During follow-up sessions, the tooth remained asy

Marsupialization of a Large Radicular Cyst with Extensive Maxillary Tooth Displacement: Eight-Year Follow-Up.

Radicular cysts arising from primary teeth are uncommon and, when present as large lesions, may adversely affect the underlying permanent teeth. The purpose of this paper is to describe the management of a very large atypical radicular cyst involving the primary dentition of a nine-year-old boy and causing extensive tooth displacement with transposition of the permanent maxillary left canine between the bicuspids. The root apex of the canine was close to the median level of the lateral border of the nasal cavity and showed incomplete root formation and signs of dilacerations in its apical thir

Life cycles of traumatized teeth: long-term observations from a cohort of dental trauma victims.

Life cycles of dental trauma victims can provide important clinical information, especially when viewed over many years. In this first series of life cycles, the pulp and periodontal responses to traumatic injuries of four patients are documented over periods varying from 26 to 51 years. The dynamics of pulp survival following an intrusive luxation and two avulsions are followed, with particular reference to pulp canal calcification to which a new term, root canal stenosis, has been proposed. The life cycles include the successful management of inflammatory root resorption in a replanted tooth

Microleakage in endodontics.

A three-dimensional obturation and complete coronal and apical seal is one the important aims of root canal treatment. Since microorganisms may remain in the root canal system after instrumentation, a tight apical seal is desired to prevent bacteria and their by-products from invading the apex. A perfect apical seal is also desired to prevent apical percolation. One of the major objectives of tooth restoration is the protection of exposed dentine against bacteria and their toxins. The interface between the restoration and dental hard tissue is an area of clinical concern as insufficient sealin

Dens invaginatus in an immature maxillary lateral incisor: a case report of complex endodontic treatment.

This case report presents the surgical endodontic treatment of an Oehlers Class II invaginated immature tooth. In this case, communication between the invagination and the pulp caused pulp necrosis, periapical inflammation, and cessation of root formation. The initial treatment goal was to achieve apexification and then fill both the root canal and the canal of the invagination. After a 6-month treatment with calcium hydroxide dressings, there was no healing radiographically and no sign of a hard tissue barrier in the apex. Periapical surgery with the placement of mineral trioxide aggregate (M

Nonsurgical Retreatment of a Mandibular Molar with Internal Resorption and a Separated Endodontic Instrument Deep within the Body of the Mandible.

Fracture of an endodontic instrument during an endodontic procedure is a common complication, but displacement of the separated instrument either inside or by the side of the inferior alveolar canal is very rare. This case report presents nonsurgical retreatment of a symptomatic, previously endodontically treated mandibular left first molar tooth with internal root resorption. The unique feature of this case report is the presence of a separated endodontic instrument entirely beyond the root apex and located deep within the body of the mandible. Under rubber dam isolation, access cavity prepar

Imaging of Mixed and Radiopaque Jaw Lesions.

Radiopaque lesions and lesions of mixed density are less frequent than radiolucent lesions of the jawbones. They comprise a spectrum of odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions. The latter group includes inherited and developmental disorders, osteomyelitis, and benign and malignant primary bone tumors and metastases. Most odontogenic radiopaque or mixed lesions are either related to the apex or more rarely to the crown of the tooth, although there are exceptions to this rule. Some lesions, such as a torus mandibularis and torus palatinus, have a characteristic location, whereas others show no r
