Implant Rehabilitation Following Loss of Tooth Restorability Associated With Poorly Controlled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Report.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of periodontal disease, impaired bone metabolism, delayed wound healing, and progressive alveolar bone loss, all of which may adversely affect the prognosis of compromised teeth. This case report describes the management of a 42-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus who presented with a severely compromised maxillary canine. The patient had previously been advised to undergo definitive restorative treatment with a full-coverage crown because of extensive structural deterioration. However, financial limitations, inconsistent med

Modeling enamel matrix secretion in mammalian teeth.

The most mineralized tissue of the mammalian body is tooth enamel. Especially in species with thick enamel, three-dimensional (3D) tomography data has shown that the distribution of enamel varies across the occlusal surface of the tooth crown. Differences in enamel thickness among species and within the tooth crown have been used to examine taxonomic affiliations, life history, and functional properties of teeth. Before becoming fully mineralized, enamel matrix is secreted on the top of a dentine template, and it remains to be explored how matrix thickness is spatially regulated. To provide a …

Orthodontic management of a developing dentigerous cyst related to lower second molar: a case report.

The dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic asymptomatic cyst, that is associated with the crown of an unerupted or impacted tooth. Early diagnosis is important to avoid any future complications and choose the best treatment option. The purpose of this case report is to describe the management of a dentigerous cyst related to lower second molar in a young female patient using orthodontic traction as a conservative treatment approach. This procedure helps to spare the patient an unnecessary surgical excision procedure and the associated excessive bone removal for a safety margin, stimul

Vestibular unit transplantation in the coverage of gingival recession: a microsurgical approach.

The palate, maxillary tuberosity and edentulous ridges are generally used as the donor sites for connective tissue grafts. This article shows the use of vestibular soft tissue of a tooth in the coverage of localized gingival recession. The vestibular unit was harvested during crown lengthening procedures, sutured over the denuded root surface, and covered with a coronally advanced flap without vertical incisions. The healing was uneventful with complete coverage of the recession up to 18 months. The vestibular unit of a tooth can serve as the donor area for a connective tissue graft in the cov

Association of mesiodentes and dens invaginatus in a child: a rare entity.

Supernumerary teeth are defined as any teeth in excess of normal number. Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth, in the central region of premaxilla between two central incisors. Dens invaginatus is a developmental anomaly resulting from invagination in the surface of tooth crown before calcification has occurred. Radiographically, it is observed as infolding of a radioopaque ribbon like structure, with equal density as enamel, extending from cingulum into a root canal and sometimes reaching the root apex. This paper aims to present a rare association of dens invaginatus with two mesiodentes in a …

Open proximal contact associated with a cast restoration--progressive bone loss: a case report.

A patient presented with early to moderate periodontitis localized around tooth No. 30. This tooth had a cast restoration with an open proximal contact for the previous seven years. Radiographs spanning this time period showed progressive bone loss. Surgical periodontal therapy was performed after correction of the open proximal contact with a provisional restoration. A new porcelain-fused-to-metal crown was placed three months after surgical therapy. The patients has been on a regular six-month recall schedule for three years and has maintained a healthy periodontium. Prior food impaction has

Resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis versus implant-supported single crowns in the anterior region.

BACKGROUND: Different treatment options exist for replacement of an anterior tooth, and as implant-supported single crowns (ISSC) and resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis (RBFDPs) both are widespread treatment options, it is of clinical relevance to know which treatment modality can be considered superior. PURPOSE: The purpose of this comparative study was to evaluate the 3- and 5-year survival and failure rate of tooth-supported resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis compared to implant-supported single crowns. The null hypothesis was that there was no significant difference in survival rate,

Decompression of a Dentigerous Cyst in a Child With Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization: A Seven-Year Follow-Up Case Report.

Dentigerous cysts are common developmental odontogenic cysts that may compromise the eruption and morphology of developing teeth. Their management of children increasingly favors conservative approaches, particularly when tooth preservation is possible. Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) introduces additional clinical considerations due to enamel fragility, which may affect patient comfort and complicate postoperative hygiene. An eight-year-old boy with MIH presented with a dentigerous cyst associated with the unerupted mandibular right second molar (tooth 47), incidentally identified on a

Long-term Follow-up of Apexogenesis, Root Canal Obliteration and External Replacement Resorption Following Tooth Replantation.

Dental replantation is the treatment of choice for tooth avulsion; however, complications such as root canal obliteration, pulp necrosis and tooth resorption can arise, influenced by factors like extra-alveolar time and the storage medium in which the tooth was maintained. This case report discusses a seven-year-old child who experienced a traumatic avulsion of a permanent maxillary right central incisor with incomplete root formation. While the tooth was successfully replanted and both pulp vitality and complete root formation (apexogenesis) were initially maintained, the tooth later develope

Tooth autotransplantation using an interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation in a young patient: Case report with 7-year follow-up.

This case report demonstrates the possibility of functional and aesthetic rehabilitation using an interdisciplinary approach in a child following avulsion of a tooth. Autotransplantation after the development of calcific metamorphosis of the pulp and acute apical periodontitis provided satisfactory repair after root canal treatment. A 7-year-old white boy avulsed the right maxillary central incisor (tooth 11). The extra-alveolar time exceeded 60 minutes, and this triggered external replacement resorption of the avulsed tooth. At 11 years of age, the child underwent tooth autotransplantation. A

Management of a Complicated Crown-Root Fracture by Surgical Extrusion: A Two-Year Follow-Up.

Complicated crown-root fractures (CRFs) in the anterior region demonstrate significant restorative and esthetic challenges, particularly when the fracture extends subgingivally. Surgical extrusion is a conservative treatment option that repositions the tooth coronally, facilitating restoration while preserving periodontal health. This case report describes the management of a complicated CRF using a minimally traumatic surgical extrusion technique followed by endodontic and restorative rehabilitation. The two-year follow-up demonstrates favorable periodontal healing, tooth stability, and succe

Hemisection of Grossly-Decayed Teeth With Socket Preservation: A Case Report.

Hemisection of a molar is a surgical procedure involving the removal or separation of one root together with its corresponding portion of the crown. This approach allows for the preservation of the remaining tooth structure and surrounding alveolar bone, while providing support for subsequent fixed prosthetic rehabilitation. The present case report describes the successful application of hemisection to retain a severely compromised mandibular first molar with periodontal and periapical involvement. Following prosthetic rehabilitation, the treatment achieved a favourable outcome. Through meticu

Unusual presentation of 'u-shaped' impacted maxillary central incisor with intranasal root: successful surgical management.

BACKGROUND: Dilacerations is a tooth deformity characterized by an angulation between crown and root causing non-eruption of the tooth. It generally occurs following trauma to the deciduous dentition apices of which lie close to the permanent tooth buds. According to Neville, maxillary and mandibular incisors contribute only approximately to 1% of the incidence of dilacerated teeth. CASE DETAILS: A 15 year old male patient reported with chief complaint of missing anterior teeth in the left side of maxillary arch. Radiographic evaluation showed impacted maxillary left central incisor. The radi

Multiple internal resorption in permanent teeth associated with hyperparathyroidism.

Internal resorption has been described as a resorptive defect of internal aspect of tooth. It is caused by transformation of normal pulp tissue into granulomatous tissue with giant cells which resorb dentin. Though mostly idiopathic in origin, trauma, caries and restorative procedures have also been suggested to be contributing factors of internal resorption of pulp. Most of the internal resorption cases were found on isolated individual tooth. There are few case reports on multiple root resorptions. External root resorption have been frequently associated with systemic disorders like renal di

Preeruptive idiopathic coronal resorption: a case report.

A bitewing radiograph obtained from a general dentist revealed an intracoronal radiolucency within an unerupted immature permanent second molar. This rare entity was successfully treated by surgical exposure and vital pulp therapy. Apexogenesis was confirmed radiographically and a permanent restoration placed at the time of eruption. Possible etiologies for this condition are discussed and recommendations for treatment are proposed.

Pre-eruptive coronal radiolucency in a mandibular premolar: a case report and literature review.

This report describes a coronal radiolucency in an unerupted mandibular premolar. This anomaly, which most frequently involves the mandibular second molars, has been variously attributed to dental caries, dentine hypoplasia, inclusions of uncalcified enamel matrix, and resorption. The present instance was considered to be due to external resorption. Because these lesions may enlarge rapidly, frequent radiographic monitoring of an affected tooth is recommended. Early restorative treatment has been shown to be successful even in affected teeth with small pulp exposures.

Crown and root resorption of a maxillary permanent first molar by an impacted second premolar: a case report.

A case is described of resorption of the mesial aspect of a maxillary permanent first molar in a 13-year-old boy whose maxillary second premolar was impacted. The premolar was partially erupted in the line of the arch and radiography revealed a radiolucent area involving enamel, dentine and cementum on the mesial aspect of the first molar. The first molar was extracted and the premolar erupted normally. The case emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis of developmental abnormalities.

Tracing early life stress in human molar morphology: Associations between linear enamel hypoplasia and maxillary first molar form.

Permanent tooth structures can respond to environmental disruptions even after the initiation of hard tissue deposition at the cusp tips, affecting dental morphology. In bioarcheological studies, linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) provides evidence of both the presence and timing of developmental stressors that can occur during first molar odontogenesis. Yet, previous studies used LEH from the entirety of the anterior tooth surface to relate disruptions to changes in permanent tooth morphology, which could conflate causality by misrepresenting the timing of events. This study assessed associations
