The Decision Between Tooth Retention or Replacement with Implants: A Continuing Dilemma.

The global adoption of dental implants has significantly reshaped modern dental practices, with the market projected to reach USD 16 billion by 2029. However, despite high success rates, dental implants can still be prone to complications, particularly when underlying causes of tooth loss, such as periodontal disease and bone loss, are not addressed. This paper explores the biological and mechanical considerations in the decision-making process between preserving a tooth through periodontal therapy or opting for extraction and implant placement. It also highlights the importance of a holistic …

BMP signaling in the development and regeneration of tooth roots: from mechanisms to applications.

Short root anomaly (SRA), along with caries, periodontitis, and trauma, can cause tooth loss, affecting the physical and mental health of patients. Dental implants have become widely utilized for tooth restoration; however, they exhibit certain limitations compared to natural tooth roots. Tissue engineering-mediated root regeneration offers a strategy to sustain a tooth with a physiologically more natural function by regenerating the bioengineered tooth root (bio-root) based on the bionic principle. While the process of tooth root development has been reported in previous studies, the specific…

A fine-grained network for human identification using panoramic dental images.

When accidents occur, panoramic dental images play a significant role in identifying unknown bodies. In recent years, deep neural networks have been applied to address this task. However, while tooth contours are significant in classical methods, few studies using deep learning methods devise an architecture specifically to introduce tooth contours into their models. Since fine-grained image identification aims to distinguish subordinate categories by specific parts, we devise a fine-grained human identification model that leverages the distribution of tooth masks to distinguish different indi

Timeframe of socket cortication after tooth extraction: A retrospective radiographic study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the timeframe between tooth extraction and radiographically detectable socket cortication in humans. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty patients with a CT scan ≤36 months after tooth extraction were included. First, three orthoradial multiplanar reconstruction slices, representing the major part of the extraction socket, were scored regarding the degree of bone healing as (i) healed, that is, complete/continuous cortication of the socket entrance, or (ii) non-healed. Thereafter, based on the results of all three slices, the stage of cortication of the extraction socket, as o

Local application of zoledronate for maximum anchorage during space closure.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontists have used various compliance-dependent physical means such as headgears and intraoral appliances to prevent anchorage loss. The aim of this study was to determine whether 1 local application of the bisphosphonate zoledronate could be used to prevent anchorage loss during extraction space closure in rats. METHODS: Thirty rats had their maxillary left first molars extracted and their maxillary left second molars protracted into the extraction space with a 10-g nickel-titanium closing coil for 21 days. Fifteen control rats received a local injection of phosphate-buffe

The effect of primary tooth extraction on the eruption of succedaneous premolars.

This study evaluated the time of eruption of maxillary and mandibular premolars after the premature loss of the antecedent; the contralateral side was used as the control. Although environmental factors seem to influence tooth emergence, they appear to have little influence on tooth maturation.

[Association between oral conditions and colorectal cancer: A literature review and synthesis].

BACKGROUND: Chronic periodontitis and tooth loss are chronic oral conditions that, in recent decades, have been implicated in the occurrence of certain types of cancer. In this review, we address the question of whether colorectal cancer is associated with these oral conditions. RESULTS: Epidemiological studies evaluating a potential association between periodontitis, tooth loss and colorectal cancer are scarce. However, several mechanisms argue in favor of this association, notably inflammation, nutrition and possibly infection by specific bacteria, as suggested by this literature review.

To conserve or implant: which choice of therapy?

The longevity of teeth depends directly on the state of the periodontal tissues. Many etiologic factors can lead to the loss of a tooth. Tooth loss is frequently associated with bone resorption. The diagnosis of a condition and knowledge of its etiology are essential to assess the prognosis of the remaining teeth and to formulate the correct treatment plan. Many parameters must be investigated to ascertain an accurate diagnosis. An understanding of the patient's needs and the length and likely success of treatment guides the decision of whether to preserve teeth or extract them and place impla…

Dental Abrasion of Incisor caused by a Babies' Dummy Clip: A Case Report.

Tooth surface loss (TSL), the non-carious loss of tooth tissue, is considered pathological if the teeth involved experience sensitivity and pain, are functionally compromised or they detract from the patient's appearance. TSL is a common clinical finding in many patient groups, although differences between the primary and permanent dentition contribute to TSL occurring at a faster rate and with worse outcomes in the primary dentition. This case report presents localized abrasion and associated apical periodontitis affecting a single primary tooth in a 2-year-old infant following the misuse of

Posterior maxillary segmental osteotomy concomitant with sinus lift using a piezoelectric device.

Tooth loss evokes functional and esthetic problems, and adjacent teeth can move if they are not corrected in a timely manner, rendering the problems of restoring the dentition more complex. If the opposing tooth is consequently extruded, several treatment modalities may be adopted, such as occlusal adjustment, crown prosthesis, orthodontic treatment, and segmental osteotomy. Segmental osteotomy is the most aggressive and invasive treatment for restoring a problematic occlusal plane due to the complications, such as hemorrhage, loss of tooth vitality, or necrosis of the segment. Piezoelectric d…

Mandibular anterior crowding: normal or pathological?

The teeth become very close to each other when they are crowded, but their structures remain individualized and, in this situation, the role of the epithelial rests of Malassez is fundamental to release the EGF. The concept of tensegrity is fundamental to understand the responses of tissues submitted to forces in body movements, including teeth and their stability in this process. The factors of tooth position stability in the arch - or dental tensegrity - should be considered when one plans and perform an orthodontic treatment. The direct causes of the mandibular anterior crowding are decisiv

Teeth and benign oesophageal stricture.

In patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, benign oesophageal strictures were significantly more frequent (p less than 0.01) in those with severe tooth loss than in controls of the same age. This may be because of edentulous patients eating less solid and more liquid food, which would otherwise dilate the lower oesophagus, or poor salivary flow leading to both tooth loss and impaired neutralisation of refluxed gastric acid, or malnutrition. No association was found, however, between either oesophagitis or hiatus hernia and dentition.
