As one of the earliest-known mammaliaforms, Haramiyavia clemmenseni from the Rhaetic (Late Triassic) of East Greenland has held an important place in understanding the timing of the earliest radiation of the group. Reanalysis of the type specimen using high-resolution computed tomography (CT) has revealed new details, such as the presence of the dentary condyle of the mammalian jaw hinge and the postdentary trough for mandibular attachment of the middle ear-a transitional condition of the predecessors to crown Mammalia. Our tests of competing phylogenetic hypotheses with these new data show th

PURPOSE: Multiple factors have been considered in the etiology of bruxism in pediatric patients, among which are infestations by intestinal parasites suggested by some authors. No empirical evidence exists, however, of such association. Therefore, this study's purpose was to investigate the existence of an association between bruxism and intestinal parasitic infestation in children.
METHODS: Fifty-seven 6- to 11-year-olds (30 cases and 27 controls) who had not used anthelminthics 2 months before the baseline examination were enrolled in the study. A diagnosis of bruxism was based on an intrao

Vertebrate enamel preserves a record of fracture-producing strain. Fracturing during the life of the individual is potentially a source of selection for stronger enamel in the course of evolution. To determine if it is possible to recognize such fractures in fossil enamel, cracks in a variety of fossil materials, including enamel-covered holostean scales, crocodilian teeth, theropod and hadrosaurid dinosaur teeth, and mammalian teeth were examined. Cracks that occurred during the life of the individual could be recognized by abrasive wear on edges exposed at the surface of the enamel in areas

Different agents have been discussed as potential alternatives to fluoride in the prevention and treatment of erosive tooth wear (ETW). These agents may act by (1) forming an acid-protective layer on the tooth surface, such as through the use of sealants, polymers or the modification of the acquired pellicle; (2) enhancing mechanisms of (mineral) precipitation; and/or (3) preserving the organic matrix of dentine. The application of adhesives, sealants or flowables is considered to be an effective alternative to fluoride, but requires a re-sealing of the surface every several months depending o…

UNLABELLED: Pathological tooth wear is an escalating social problem. Occlusal veneers can be an alternative to traditional prosthetic restorations such as crowns, inlays, and onlays.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to assess the fracture resistance of occlusal veneers made of various materials depending on their thickness.
METHODS: In total, 120 occlusal veneers were examined. The restorations were made of four ceramics: leucite LC (IPS Empress Esthetic), hybrid HC (Vita Enamic), lithium disilicate LDC (IPS e.max Press), and zirconium oxide ZOC (Ceramill Zolid HT). A total of 30 veneers…

OBJECTIVES: The present review aims to give an overview of the literature focusing on novel genetic aspects of dental erosion and dental caries. Once the tooth erupts into the oral cavity, the regenerative capability of enamel is fundamentally limited due to the loss of dental epithelium during eruption. The susceptibility or resistance to dental erosion and caries is presumably a result of environmental, phenotypic, and/or genetic influence. Even though it is evident that individuals frequently exposing their teeth to acid and sugar are at high risk of developing dental erosion and caries, th

The Hall Technique (HT) is a method for managing carious primary molars. Decay is sealed under pre-formed metal crowns without any caries removal, tooth preparation, or local anesthesia. The aim of this study was to compare HT clinical/radiographic failure rates with General Dental Practitioners' (GDPs) standard (control) restorations. We conducted a split-mouth, randomized control trial (132 children, aged 3-10 yrs, GDPs n = 17) in Scotland. There were 264 study teeth with initial lesions, 42% of which were radiographically > half-way into dentin, and 67% of which had Class II restorations. T

Sotos syndrome is a well-known overgrowth syndrome caused by haploinsufficiency of NSD1 gene located at 5q35. There are two types of mutations that cause NSD1 haploinsufficiency: mutations within the NSD1 gene (mutation type) and a 5q35 submicroscopic deletion encompassing the entire NSD1 gene (deletion type). We investigated detailed craniofacial, dental, and oral findings in five patients with deletion type, and three patients with mutation type Sotos syndrome. All eight patients had a high palate, excessive tooth wear, crowding, and all but one patient had hypodontia and deep bite. Hypodont…

This study evaluated (1) the load-bearing capacity of molars restored with direct occlusal veneers fabricated either from short-fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) or particulate-filled composite (PFC) and the presence of internal voids within the materials, and (2) effect of water storage on the fracture load and correlation between internal voids and fracture load. Sixty human molars (n = 10/group) were prepared with flat occlusal surfaces and preserved enamel margins simulating worn teeth. Conventional molds were taken for each tooth to control the preparation depth and transparent molds to r

Seventy-four hominoid primary teeth have been recovered from the middle Miocene site of Paşalar, Turkey, constituting the largest sample of deciduous teeth for any species of fossil ape. Morphological features that characterize the permanent teeth of Griphopithecus alpani from the site have also been identified in some of these deciduous teeth, including a lingual pillar on the di(1)s. These features plus the overwhelming preponderance of G. alpani permanent teeth at the site suggest that all of the deciduous teeth belong to this species. Contrary to the situation in the permanent teeth, nothi

Zirconia is widely used in full-arch restorations due to its strength and aesthetics, but failures can still affect its performance in clinical practice. In this report, a full-arch tooth-supported zirconia bridge fractured prematurely (eleven months), encouraging an investigation into its design and failure mechanisms. STL files obtained from the dental laboratory revealed regions of reduced framework thickness, falling below the manufacturer's recommendations. Fractographic analysis of the fractured pieces indicated a multifactorial failure pattern. Notable features included a thick cement l

PATIENTS: This report describes the digital workflow for the design and fabrication of a telescopic prosthesis that incorporates a polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) primary crown and PEKK framework to restore multiple teeth in the mandible of a 56-year-old female patient. The process includes intraoral scanning, computer-aided design, digital milling of the telescopic crown and PEKK framework, and 3D printing of the casts. Good retention, mastication, aesthetics, and biological outcomes are observed in the four-year follow-up.
DISCUSSION: Two clinical outcomes are observed. (1) A PEKK telescopic p

The etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is remarkably diverse. This case report highlights the use of clear aligners as a probable cofactor of TMD in an adult patient. A 56-year-old woman who presented with a chief concern of crowding was missing teeth in both arches and had generalized tooth wear, an indistinct history of temporomandibular joint musculoskeletal pain, and a self-reported history of clenching. Based on the patient's preferences, clear aligner therapy (CAT) was initiated with a limited treatment goal of providing improved esthetics by reducing the overjet, expanding t…

The gradual formation of hard tissue along the root canal walls is a natural process associated with aging, typically progressing slowly over time. In reaction to tooth wear, operative procedures, vital pulp treatments, or regenerative endodontic procedures, hard tissue may also accumulate within the pulp canal space at a slow rate. In certain cases, such as dental trauma, autotransplantation, or orthodontic treatment, this deposition of hard tissue can accelerate unexpectedly, resulting in rapid narrowing or complete closure of the root canal space. This situation is called calcific metamorph…

BACKGROUND: Non-human primates can present oral diseases. However, differences among the dentition of the various species make it difficult to understand their dental features and associated diseases. This research hypothesizes that the prevalence of dental disorders varies in the species studied according to distinct types of diet.
METHODS: Forty-five syncraniums of the species Alouatta caraya, Alouatta guariba clamitans, Sapajus nigritus, Callithrix jacchus, and Callithrix penicillata were evaluated by visual inspection, magnifying glasses, and on cone-beam computed tomography.
RESULTS: Di

OBJECTIVES: This study estimated the maximum tongue pressure (MTP) against teeth in bruxers, and verified the effect of a stabilization splint.
METHOD: Forty subjects (mean age: 26.57 years) were assigned to two groups (n520): bruxers and nonbruxers. Sleep bruxism was diagnosed by self-report, presence of tooth wear and tongue indentation, and by using a BiteStrip2 device. Maximum tongue pressure was measured by intraoral appliances containing pressure sensors. After baseline evaluation, bruxers received a stabilization splint and non-bruxers received a palatal splint, both for nocturnal use.…
