[The effectiveness of a chlorhexidine (Plak-out) gel and solution: clinical study].

A gel containing 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate has been utilized during 6 weeks as a toothpast 3 times a day by a group of 8 students, while 8 other volonteers have brushed their teeth with a gel placebo. The gingival and plaque indices, as well as the amount of gingival fluid have been measured at the beginning and at the end of the experimental time. Colour photographs were also taken. The study, performed in double blind, did not show any significant change in the gingival conditions of the 16 students. In a second trial, the antiplaque properties of a chlorhexidine containing solution (Plak

Prediction model of dental caries in 12-year-old children in Sichuan Province based on machine learning.

OBJECTIVES: The machine learning algorithm was used to construct a prediction model of children's dental caries to determine the risk factors of dental caries in children and put forward targeted measures and policy suggestions to improve children's oral health. METHODS: Stratified cluster random sampling was adopted in this study. In accordance with different policies and measures in Sichuan Province, 12-year-old students from 3-4 middle schools in eight cities of Sichuan Province were randomly selected for questionnaire survey, oral examination, and physical examination. Multivariate logist

Patients' awareness regarding the quality of their oral hygiene: development and validation of a new measurement instrument.

BACKGROUND: The present research aimed to develop and validate a standardised survey instrument for the assessment of patients' awareness of the quality of their oral hygiene performance. METHODS: A digital questionnaire was developed that assesses both patients' naïve self-perceptions of oral cleanliness (SPOCn) after tooth brushing and patients' perceptions after being informed how oral cleanliness may be captured in dentistry (SPOCd). Three studies (N = 56 adults, N = 66 adolescents and one of their parents, N = 24 university students) assessed the instrument's feasibility (patient reports

What is the best mechanical device to clean the teeth in periodontal maintenance patients?

Aim This study evaluates the available clinical evidence with regards to the effectiveness of mechanical oral hygiene devices in patients who are in periodontal maintenance.Data sources A structured online search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and Embase. All the databases were explored from initiation to October 2019. Reference lists of all the included studies were hand-searched as well.Study selection Randomised clinical trials or controlled clinical trials were included in this systematic review if the participants were adult patie

Better oral hygiene is associated with lower risk of stroke.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease or poor oral hygiene may lead to local infection, inflammation, and systemic inflammatory reactions, which are important mediators of development of stroke. We aimed to investigate the association of oral hygiene with risk of stroke in a nationwide population-based cohort. METHODS: From Korean National Health Insurance System-Health Screening Cohort, 206,602 participants without missing data regarding demographic information, medical history, or blood/urine examination results were included. The presence of periodontal disease and indicators of oral hygiene, su

Do chronotype differences and night eating syndrome affect dental health?

OBJECTIVE: Our aim in this study was to examine the effect of chronotype differences and night eating syndrome on dental health parameters such as the decay-missing-filled teeth (DMFT) index, the severity of the periodontal disease and the number of endodontically treated teeth in patients admitted to the dental clinic. METHODS: The participants, 210 patients, filled out a package of psychological tools, including the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), the Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Afterwards, the DMFT index scores, the severity of the p

Human papillomavirus detection in matched oral rinses, oropharyngeal and oral brushings of cancer-free high-risk individuals.

OBJECTIVES: The detection of oral Human Papillomavirus (HPV) may be of clinical utility because of the major role HPV plays in the etiology of oropharyngeal cancer. However, oral HPV testing is not standardized and the best sampling method has yet to be identified. We aimed to compare HPV findings in matched oral rinse-and-gargles (rinses), oropharyngeal brushings and oral brushings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HPV-DNA was investigated using Linear Array in samples collected from cancer-free individuals at increased risk for oral HPV. RESULTS: 163 oral rinses already tested for HPV were selected.

Periodontal diseases as a source of halitosis: a review of the evidence and treatment approaches for dentists and dental hygienists.

Bad breath (halitosis) is an important social complaint. In most cases (≥90%), the cause of halitosis can be found within the oral cavity. Under this circumstance, the term oral malodor applies. It affects both healthy and periodontally diseased individuals. Oral malodor is mainly caused by a microbial degradation of both sulfur-containing and nonsulfur-containing amino acids into volatile, bad-smelling gases. Anaerobic gram-negative bacteria, the same species that have been linked to periodontal diseases, are especially involved in this process, explaining why clinicians often associate oral

A survey of factors possibly associated with cervical abrasion of tooth surfaces.

The study indicates that cervical abrasion is related in some way to a factor or factors associated with the initial stages of the tooth-brushing procedure. The evidence, furthermore, demonstrates that an excessive use of dentifrice habitually placed, undiluted, on the same area of the mouth, may produce the abrasion. In view of this evidence, it would seem prudent to advise patients to use decreased quantities of dentifrice and to initiate the brushing procedure on the occlusal surfaces of the teeth to effect a dilution of the dentrifrice. The same effect might be accomplished by alternating

Surgical approaches for the treatment of different cases of gingival recessions: a case report.

Gingival recession is a condition characterized by the apical displacement of the gingival margin relative to the cementoenamel junction; it is commonly associated with esthetic concerns and dentin hypersensitivity. We present a clinical case of a 49-year-old female patient presenting with multiple gingival recessions linked to vigorous toothbrushing and dental malposition. In the first phase of periodontal treatment, coronal scaling was performed, and oral hygiene instructions were provided. In the second phase, surgical procedures for root coverage were carried out using a connective tissue …
