Three cases of infantile subglottic hemangioma are described. Generally conservative management is favored by most authors. These present lesions were removed surgically by midline cricotracheotomy. Follow-up showed that all children were well and without complaints. The authors believe that besides management with the CO2 laser and short-term steroid therapy, operative treatment of infantile subglottic hemangioma is a valuable alternative which should receive more attention. All children were decannulated a few days after surgery.

We describe a case of a quadriplegic brain-damaged man with severe upper airway obstruction. A diagnosis of tardive dystonia affecting the vocal folds was made and confirmed by flexible nasopharyngoscopy. Emergency tracheotomy was required. The tardive movement disorder resolved with discontinuation of thioridazine. This case serves to heighten awareness of potentially serious airway complications associated with the use of anti-psychotics and anti-emetics particularly in those with organic brain disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis rarely involves the cricoarytenoid joint, symptoms of varying severity ranging from foreign body sensation, fullness or tension in the throat, hoarseness, odynophagia, speech or cough pain to stridor and respiratory distress during bilateral paralysis of the vocal cords. We are reporting a case of rheumatoid arthritis with bilateral involvement of the vocal cords. The diagnosis was clinically made and confirmed by endolaryngoscopy, responding to antirheumatic treatment but coming to the stage of permanent tracheotomy.

The laryngopyocele is a rare complication of laryngocele. About one case of laryngopyocele and review of literature, the authors recall the main characteristics of this affection. Its clinical picture is often alarming. The CT scan, not often made emmergenceley, give a characteristic image. The treatment is mainly surgical but also endoscopic, then facilitated by the use of laser. The fact of thinking to this diagnosis toward a laryngeal dyspnea with fever permit sometimes to avoid tracheotomy then usually made emmergencely.

In patients with respiratory distress and difficulty in swallowing life-threatening conditions should be born in mind. We report a case in which the diagnosis of retropharyngeal abscess was established with considerable delay in an eight-month girl. The etiology and clinical picture is discussed. We conclude that patients with stridor and drooling should be admitted to hospital at once and should be examined with equipment for tracheotomy/intubation ready. If the epiglottis is found to be normal the possibility of a retropharyngeal abscess should be considered.

Report of an unwonted case of laryngopyocele because of its presentation. The patient came into Hospital suffering from acute laryngeal dyspnea, which made us to carry out an urgent tracheotomy. Afterwards a direct laryngoscopy discovered a large tumor, covered by a mucosa of normal appearance, blocking the laryngeal inlet. The laryngopyocele was confirmed by thyrotomy after the previous direct laryngoscopy awaken the suspicious either a malignant grown or a cancer with a laryngocele association.

A method for continuous monitoring and recording of ventilation rate and tidal volume in spontaneously breathing anesthetized rats is described. The system is based on a hot wire flow meter placed in connection with the tracheotomy tube. In cardiovascular experiments routine monitoring of ventilation was found useful in the following instances: 1) detection of ventilatory disorders, 2) detection of central effects of drugs, 3) interpretation of results in cases where cardiovascular drugs alter ventilatory function.

Mandibular lingual surgery is commonly used in periodontal practice. There are inherent risks in such surgery which are illustrated by a case report described here. This was a case in which an emergency tracheotomy was needed after a minor procedure which involved lingual tissues. The potential problems of any form of lingual surgery are discussed. Various other surgical procedures in this region are examined in order to establish some surgical principles which may be of use to periodontists.
