What is the effect of intraoperative traction on correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)?

PURPOSE: Determine the efficacy of intraoperative traction (IOT) on curve correction in AIS. METHODS: A prospective, multicenter, longitudinal database identified patients with major thoracic AIS (Lenke 1-4) treated with surgery using IOT and follow-up of 2 years. These cases were matched to comparable cases treated without traction (non-IOT). All patients were treated with single-stage posterior only surgery with pedicle screw constructs. Perioperative, radiographic and clinical outcome data at 2 years post-op were compared between the groups. RESULTS: 104 cases treated with IOT were matche…

Ocular toxoplasmosis related macular traction: A case report and review of the literature.

This is a case of toxoplasmosis retinochoroiditis which has resulted in the formation of vitreomacular traction upon resolution which is rarely associated with ocular toxoplasmosis. A 39-year-old male came with an active toxoplasmosis retinochoroiditis. Best-corrected visual acuity, full ophthalmic slitlamp examination, colour fundus photography, spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and fluorescein angiography were performed. Presumed ocular toxoplasmosis diagnosis was supported by serological tests. The patient was treated medically for 45 days and on his follow up he develo…

Respiratory distress in Pierre Robin sequence: an experience with mandible traction by wires.

Congenital retrognathia and glossoptosis characterize isolated Pierre Robin sequence (iPRS); the small mandible and its retracted position cause retrodisplacement of the tongue and reduction of the oropharyngeal airway. These neonates may be affected by airway obstruction, feeding difficulties, failure to thrive, and chronic hypoxaemia. To solve the respiratory problems secondary to glossoptosis, various treatments have been described including prone positioning, a nasopharyngeal tube, glossopexy, and mandibular distraction. Over the last 28 years, the authors have treated 118 neonates and inf…

En bloc perfluorodissection for tractional retinal detachment in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

OBJECTIVE: En bloc perfluorodissection (EBPD) is a surgical dissection technique that facilitates removal of epiretinal membranes and the posterior hyaloid. It is carried out by injecting perfluorocarbon liquid between the retina and the posterior hyaloid to separate the epiretinal tissues from the subjacent retina. The objective of this study was to describe the technique and to demonstrate the applicability of using EBPD during vitrectomy in eyes with tractional retinal detachment (TRD) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). DESIGN: Prospective, interventional case series. PARTICIPAN…

[The conservative treatment of femur fractures by Perkins traction. Management in adverse situations].

In adverse situations and in hospitals of less prosperous countries, the operative treatment of fractures may for many reasons not be possible and conservative procedures remain the treatment of choice. This applies to the rule that under difficult conditions fracture treatment should be as conservative as possible and as operative as necessary, if at all feasible. This report goes on 109 Patients with femur fractures consecutively treated by Perkins traction in East African hospitals between Nov. 1991 and Sept. 1999. Out of them, 44 patients had wide open fractures, 41 of them caused by explo…
