Long-term exposure to air pollution and cardiovascular mortality: an analysis of 22 European cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has been associated with cardiovascular mortality, but it remains unclear as to whether specific pollutants are related to specific cardiovascular causes of death. Within the multicenter European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE), we investigated the associations of long-term exposure to several air pollutants with all cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, as well as with specific cardiovascular causes of death. METHODS: Data from 22 European cohort studies were used. Using a standardized protocol, study area-specific air pollution exposure at the

The association of specific industry-related air pollution with occurrence of chronic diseases: A register-based study.

Air pollution may contribute to onset and progression of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Most studies have focused on the contribution of traffic-related exposure to PM10 or PM2.5. Our aim was to investigate the association of different components of industry-related air pollution on the occurrence of chronic diseases. A register-based repeated cross-sectional study was conducted among 89,714 subjects (2012) with 536,599 annual observations (2012-2017) living in the vicinity of a large industrial area in the Netherlands. Information from the dispensed medicati

Distribution characteristics and sources of trace metals in sediment cores from a trans-boundary watercourse: An example from the Shima River, Pearl River Delta.

Metal pollution in sediments from the Shima River, a typical transboundary watercourse in the Pearl River Delta area, was investigated. Sediment cores were collected at eight sites from the upper to the lower reaches crossing Shenzhen, Dongguan and Huizhou cities. Sediment physicochemical properties and the total concentrations of trace metals (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb) were determined. The results showed that riverine sediment was significantly polluted by Cr (content range: 13.8-469mgkg-1), Ni (14.1-257mgkg-1), Cu (10.8-630mgkg-1), Zn (50.2-1700mgkg-1) and Cd (0.172-2.26mgkg-1).

A preliminary study into the use of tree-ring and foliar geochemistry as bio-indicators for vehicular NOx pollution in Malta.

Emissions from traffic over the past few decades have become a significant source of air pollution. Among the pollutants emitted are nitrogen oxides (NOx), exposure to which can be detrimental to public health. Recent studies have shown that nitrogen (N) stable isotope ratios in tree-rings and foliage express a fingerprint of their major N source, making them appropriate for bio-monitoring purposes. In this study, we have applied this proxy to Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis) at three distances from one of the busiest roads in Malta, a country known to suffer from intense traffic pollution. Our

Exposure–Response Associations of Household Air Pollution and Buccal Cell Telomere Length in Women Using Biomass Stoves.

BACKGROUND: Telomere shortening is associated with early mortality and chronic disease. Recent studies indicate that environmental exposures, including urban and traffic-related air pollution, may shorten telomeres. Associations between exposure to household air pollution from solid fuel stoves and telomere length have not been evaluated. METHODS: Among 137 rural Chinese women using biomass stoves ([Formula: see text] of age), we measured 48-h personal exposures to fine particulate matter [PM [Formula: see text] in aerodynamic diameter ([Formula: see text])] and black carbon and collected ora

Source Contributions to Air Pollution in the Permian Basin: Evaluating Emissions from Unconventional Oil and Gas Activities.

Unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD) has enabled the extraction of previously inaccessible hydrocarbon resources, leading to a rapid proliferation of well sites across shale regions, often in close proximity to residential communities. Air emissions from UOGD pose potential health risks, yet few studies have captured their full complexity or temporal variability using long-term, high-resolution monitoring. We conducted one year of continuous stationary air pollution monitoring in Loving, New Mexico, a high-production area of the western Permian Basin. Measurements included nitrogen ox

Quantifying the impact of daily mobility on errors in air pollution exposure estimation using mobile phone location data.

One major source of uncertainty in accurately estimating human exposure to air pollution is that human subjects move spatiotemporally, and such mobility is usually not considered in exposure estimation. How such mobility impacts exposure estimates at the population and individual level, particularly for subjects with different levels of mobility, remains under-investigated. In addition, a wide range of methods have been used in the past to develop air pollutant concentration fields for related health studies. How the choices of methods impact results of exposure estimation, especially when det

Chemical contaminant exposures assessed using silicone wristbands among fuel station attendants, taxi drivers and commercial motorcycle riders in Kampala, Uganda.

There are concerns over traffic-related air pollution in Uganda's capital, Kampala. Individuals in the transportation sector are hypothesized to be at greater risk for exposure to volatile organic compounds, given their proximity to vehicle exhaust. Silicone wristbands are a wearable technology that passively sample individuals' chemical exposures. We conducted a pilot cross sectional study to measure personal exposures to volatile organic compounds among 14 transportation workers who wore a wristband for five days. We analyzed for 75 volatile organic compounds; 33 chemicals (35%) were detecte

Applicability of a noise-based model to estimate in-traffic exposure to black carbon and particle number concentrations in different cultures.

Several studies show that a significant portion of daily air pollution exposure, in particular black carbon (BC), occurs during transport. In a previous work, a model for the in-traffic exposure of bicyclists to BC was proposed based on spectral evaluation of mobile noise measurements and validated with BC measurements in Ghent, Belgium. In this paper, applicability of this model in a different cultural context with a totally different traffic and mobility situation is presented. In addition, a similar modeling approach is tested for particle number (PN) concentration. Indirectly assessing BC

Associations of road traffic noise with adipose tissue depots and hepatic fat content - Results from the German National Cohort (NAKO).

Little is known about the relation between traffic noise exposure, an established environmental risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and early obesity-related risk markers such as adipose tissue (AT) and hepatic fat. Therefore, we aimed to assess associations of long-term road traffic noise exposure with AT depots measures from whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We analyzed cross-sectional data from 11,343 participants from the population-based German National Cohort (NAKO) who underwent MRI examination between 2014 and 2016, considering visceral (VAT), subcutaneous abdominal (SCA

Changes in the concentration and composition of urban aerosols during the COVID-19 lockdown.

This work investigates the impact of COVID-19 restrictive measures on the mass concentrations of PM1 and PM10, and their chemical components (water-soluble ions, organic and elemental carbon, and major and trace metals) at an urban site in the western Mediterranean. The evolution of gaseous pollutants (NOx, O3 and some volatile organic compounds) was also analyzed. The concentrations measured during the lockdown in 2020 were compared to those obtained during the same period over the preceding five years. The average decrease in the levels of NOx and traffic-related volatile organic compounds w

Integrated analysis of PM2.5 chemical characteristics and multi-pollutant health risks in Central Taiwan: Implications for optimizing the air quality health index (AQHI) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conventional Air Quality Index (AQI) systems often underrepresent multi-pollutant health impacts. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), which integrates daily concentrations of PM2.5, O3, and NO2 to estimate population-level health risks, addresses this limitation by accounting for multi-pollutant exposure effects. This study investigated the chemical characteristics of PM2.5 in Taichung, Taiwan, from 2020 to 2022, focusing on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and water-soluble ions (WSIs) across industrial and traffic areas. During pandemic restrictions, remote work and online learning i

Heavy metal exposure and source profiling based on leaf-deposited particulate matter in Pune city.

This study investigates particulate matter deposited on plant leaves across 27 roadside, industrial, peri-urban, highway, and rural sites in Pune city to quantify metal concentrations, identify probable pollution sources, and evaluate inhalation-related non-carcinogenic health risk. Leaf-deposited dust offers a practical, low-cost approach for detecting metal-enriched urban microenvironments. Samples were analysed for ten elements, with concentrations following the order Ca > K > Fe > Na > Mg > Mn > Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb, reflecting dominant contributions from crustal material, construction activi

Personal exposure to fine particulate air pollution while commuting: An examination of six transport modes on an urban arterial roadway.

Traffic-related air pollution in urban areas contributes significantly to commuters' daily PM2.5 exposures, but varies widely depending on mode of commuting. To date, studies show conflicting results for PM2.5 exposures based on mode of commuting, and few studies compare multiple modes of transportation simultaneously along a common route, making inter-modal comparisons difficult. In this study, we examined breathing zone PM2.5 exposures for six different modes of commuting (bicycle, walking, driving with windows open and closed, bus, and light-rail train) simultaneously on a single 2.7 km (1.

Residential proximity to major roadways is associated with increased prevalence of allergic respiratory symptoms in children.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Numerous epidemiologic studies have reported increased risk of allergic rhinitis and asthma in relation to 'western life-style', which represents diversity of factors. We hypothesized that residential proximity to major roadways, reflecting an exposure to traffic-related air pollution, is associated with prevalence of allergic respiratory symptoms in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 8290 individuals of two age groups: 16 year olds and 7 year olds from Krakow, Poland were included. We used the Polish version of the International Study of Asthma and Allerg

Indoor and outdoor air pollution and couple fecundability: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is both a sensory blight and a threat to human health. Inhaled environmental pollutants can be naturally occurring or human-made, and include traffic-related air pollution (TRAP), ozone, particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds, among other substances, including those from secondhand smoking. Studies of air pollution on reproductive and endocrine systems have reported associations of TRAP, secondhand smoke (SHS), organic solvents and biomass fueled-cooking with adverse birth outcomes. While some evidence suggests that air pollution contributes to inferti
