INTRODUCTION: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is an integral part of medical management of patients who do not have a functioning or accessible gastrointestinal tract. This paper discusses the clinical characteristics of patients receiving PN in a 420-bed hospital from 2009 to 2011. In addition, nutritional parameters were assessed at the start and end of PN and associated complications were analyzed.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: retrospective, observational study of PN episodes in adults conducted at the Nutrition Unit of Hospital Universitario de Guadalajara. Variables collected included epidemiological

Newborns, and especially those delivered preterm, are probably more prone to oxidative stress than individuals later in life. Also during pregnancy, increased oxygen demand augments the rate of production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and women, even with normal pregnancies, experience elevated oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation compared with nonpregnant women. Also, there appears to be an increase in ROS generation in the placenta of pre-eclamptic women. In comparison with healthy adults, newborn infants have lower levels of plasma antioxidants such as vitamin E, beta-carotene, and su

Chromium was known for many years to be an element causing allergic reactions and having neurotoxic and carcinogenic effects. These effects can be observed especially in the case of hexavalent chromium. Only a little more than four decades ago trivalent chromium has been known as an essential element with relation to glycide and lipid metabolism. And only during several last years this chromium function has been revealed on a molecular level. After absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, chromium is most likely transported to cells bound to the plasma protein transferrin. Insulin initiates c

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hereditary hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome (HHCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by bilateral cataracts and increased serum and tissue L-ferritin, in the absence of iron overload. The deregulation of ferritin production is caused by heterogeneous mutations in the iron regulatory element (IRE) of L-ferritin that interfere with the binding of iron regulatory proteins.
DESIGN AND METHODS: We have identified several patients from three unrelated Italian families with HHCS. Iron parameters were assessed by standard methods. The IRE element of L-ferrit

IGFs-I and -II are single chain polypeptides (70 ad 67 aa respectively) structurally similar to proinsulin, synthesized ubiquitously and circulating carried by specific binding proteins. The IGFs act through two types of specific membrane receptors: the so called "type 1" or IGF-I receptor, and the "type 2" or IGF-II receptor. In physiological conditions IGF-I is correlated with GH secretion. However it is also influenced by other hormonal and non-hormonal factors. Little is known about the physiological significance of IGF-II, whose concentration, at variance with IGF-I, is not increased in a

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is an aggressive lymphoid proliferative disease that exists under diverse clinical forms ranging from chronic to acute. Although leukemic cells from patients with ATL exhibit an intrinsic resistance to chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies directed against CD25 (interleukin 2 receptor alpha [IL-2Ralpha] antibody) have been used as specific therapeutic agents. However, significant clinical results with these antibodies have been demonstrated only in chronic forms of ATL. In contrast to resting T cells, human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-infected c

An 11-year-old girl with a congenitally malformed left hand, sickle cell trait, asthma, and history of appendicitis was transferred from Zambia for evaluation and treatment of widespread suppurative and ulcerative skin lesions that typically appeared after trauma to her skin. The ulcers first presented 3 years earlier but had markedly worsened in the 9 months before transfer, spreading circumferentially on her extremities and abdomen at the site of an appendectomy. They were painful and did not resolve with multiple courses of intravenous antibiotics and close management by a pediatric infecti

Erythropoietin resistance index calculation has been used as a tool to evaluate anemia response to erythropoietin therapy. Very little has been reported in its use when using darbepoetin and factors influencing in Arab patients. Darbepoetin resistance index (DRI) was calculated in all our patients using darbepoetin. This was correlated to demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters. Of the 250 patients, 40.4% were diabetic, 71.1% on hemodialysis, and 28.6% on hemodiafiltration), 23.9% with PermCaths (PC), and 76.1 % with arteriovenous fistula (AVF). The mean DRI was 10.96 ± 12.9 I. Female

Research has shown that long-term exposure to lead harms the hematological system. The homeostatic iron regulator HFE (hemochromatosis) mutation, which has been shown to affect iron absorption and iron overload, is hypothesized to be related to lead intoxication in vulnerable individuals. The aim of our study was to investigate whether the HFE genotype modifies the blood lead levels that affect the distributions of serum iron and other red blood cell indices. Overall, 121 lead workers and 117 unexposed age-matched subjects were recruited for the study. The collected data included the blood lea

The delivery of therapeutics into the brain is highly limited by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Although this is essential to protect the brain from potentially harmful material found in the blood, it poses a great challenge for the treatment of diseases affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Substances from the periphery that are required for the function of the brain must rely on active mechanisms of entry. One such physiological pathway is called receptor-mediated transcytosis (RMT). In this process, ligands bind to specific receptors expressed at the luminal membrane of endothelial ce

Blood plasma metalloproteins that contain copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and/or other metals/metalloids are potential disease biomarkers because the bloodstream is in permanent contact with organs. Their quantification and/or the presence of additional metal-entities or the absence of certain metalloproteins in blood plasma (e.g. in Wilson's disease) may provide insight into the dyshomeostasis of the corresponding metal (s) to gain insight into disease processes. The first step in investigating if the determination of plasma metalloproteins is useful for the diagnosis of diseases is their d

Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) is one of the most common mucopolysaccharidoses, which is caused by mutation of the gene encoding iduronate 2-sulfatase (IDS). The loss of function of IDS leads to the accumulation of heparan sulfate and dermatan sulfate of glycosaminoglycans throughout the body, resulting in skeletal deformities, mental retardation, rigid joints, and thick skin. Recently, enzyme replacement therapy has become a common strategy for treating this condition. However, its effectiveness on the central nervous system (CNS) is limited because intravenously administered recombin

Gangliosides are sialic acid-containing glycosphingolipids mainly expressed at the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane. Sialidase NEU3 is a key enzyme in the catabolism of gangliosides with its up-regulation having been observed in human cancer cells. In the case of CME (clathrin-mediated endocytosis), although this has been widely studied, the role of NEU3 and gangliosides in this cellular process has not yet been established. In the present study, we found an increased internalization of Tf (transferrin), the archetypical cargo for CME, in cells expressing complex gangliosides with high lev

Inulin, a linear beta fructan, is present in a variety of plants including chicory root and wheat. It exhibits prebiotic properties and has been shown to enhance mineral absorption and increase beneficial bacteria in the colon. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of dietary inulin on the gene expression of selected intestinal Fe transporters and binding proteins. Anaemic piglets at age 5 weeks were allocated to a standard maize-soya diet (control) or the same diet supplemented with inulin at a level of 4 %. After 6 weeks, the animals were killed and caecum contents and sectio

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein that belongs to the transferrin family. It is present in breast milk, in epithelial secretions, and in the secondary granules of neutrophils. In healthy subjects lactoferrin circulates at concentrations of 2-7 x 10(-6) g/ml. Lactoferrin is a pleiotropic factor with potent antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities. Recently, we have shown that lactoferrin can also promote bone growth. At physiological concentrations, lactoferrin potently stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of primary osteoblasts and also acts as a survival factor inhi

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) presenting as nephrotic-range proteinuria (NR, ≥3.5g/d) exhibit distinct clinical phenotypes with and without hypoalbuminemia. The underlying mechanisms need further investigation.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with CKD hospitalized over the past two years with baseline 24-hour urine total protein (24-hUTP) exceeding 3.5g. Based on whether their baseline serum albumin (ALB) levels were ≤30 g/L, patients were assigned to two groups: the nephrotic syndrome (NS) group and the isolated nephropathy-range proteinuria (isol
