Childhood maltreatment increases the suicidal risk in Chinese schizophrenia patients.

OBJECTIVES: Childhood trauma might be a modifiable risk factor among adults with serious mental illness. However, the correlation of child trauma and suicide is unclear, which were cited most frequently as the biggest challenge to schizophrenia (SCZ) patients in China. We aim to study relationships between child trauma and suicide in SCZ patients of different disease stages. METHODS: Ninety-one participants were included and divided into two groups, namely, first-episode group (n = 46), relapsed group (n = 45). The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale was used to evaluate the severity of psyc

Urban helicopter response to the scene of injury.

Metropolitan Houston with a population of four million has the nation's poorest freeway system. Its two Level I trauma centers are adjacent within a centrally located freeway loop, therefore the city is ideally suited for a trauma scene helicopter transport service. During 1981 there were 577 flights to the scene of injury (blunt, 466; penetrating, 111). Flights were requested by 60 agencies (EMS, law enforcement, etc.). All flights were manned by a surgical resident and flight nurse. The flight distances ranged from 2 to 57 miles (average, 14.4). Three hundred six flights (53%) were within th

[Teamwork and leadership in the trauma room. Trauma room management from a psychological perspective].

The treatment of patients in the trauma room places extraordinary demands on the multidisciplinary and multiprofessional team with regard to expert qualifications and teamwork. The present study triangulates data extracted from observation, interviews and questionnaires. In general, team climate and teamwork are good, yet some problems could be identified. Not all team members-especially younger physicians and nurses-feel free to express their doubts and uncertainties. Furthermore, the treatment plan is not always clear for all team members. Absent or unclear leadership is seen as a main probl

Safe Babies, Safe Moms: A Multifaceted, Trauma Informed Care Initiative.

PURPOSE: This report describes a multifaceted, trauma-informed initiative developed to address racial/ethnic maternal and infant health inequities in Washington, D.C. DESCRIPTION: Structural racism and systemic oppression of marginalized communities have played a critical role in maternal and infant health inequities in the United States. Black birthing individuals are exponentially more likely to experience adverse birth outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight and maternal mortality. In response to these statistics, the Safe Babies Safe Moms (SBSM) initiative was developed to sup

Association of autistic traits in adulthood with childhood abuse, interpersonal victimization, and posttraumatic stress.

Persons with autistic traits may be at elevated risk for interpersonal victimization across the life course. Children with high levels of autistic traits may be targeted for abuse, and deficits in social awareness may increase risk of interpersonal victimization. Additionally, persons with autistic traits may be at elevated risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms subsequent to trauma. We examined retrospectively reported prevalence of childhood abuse, trauma victimization and PTSD symptoms by autistic traits among adult women in a population-based longitudinal cohort, the Nurses'

Head Strikes among Perioperative Personnel in the United States: A Mixed-methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers face major occupational hazards. While various workplace safety risks for anesthesiologists have been documented, head injuries remain an under-recognized hazard. This study aimed to determine the frequency and characteristics of head strikes among anesthesiologists and perioperative nurses, examine reporting practices, and identify potential preventive strategies. METHODS: In this mixed-methods, cross-sectional national study, a 22-question survey was distributed to U.S.-based anesthesiologists and perioperative nurses in February and March of 2024. Arytenoid Dislocation and Vocal Cord Immobility After Emergent Fiberoptic Intubation: A Case Report.

This case report describes a right arytenoid dislocation after emergency fiberoptic nasotracheal intubation in a patient with angioedema. The patient returned to the emergency department multiple times with classic symptoms of arytenoid dislocation, complicated by resultant postinjury laryngeal edema and poorly controlled laryngopharyngeal reflux. The arytenoid injury was not initially recognized, which delayed treatment. Several months later, intraoperative assessment was done because of continued symptoms suspicious for laryngeal injury, resulting in a diagnosis of right cricoarytenoid joint

Caring for Children with Non-Accidental Head Injuries: A Case for a Child-Centered Approach.

Child abuse remains a significant issue. Non-accidental head injury (NAHI) is a major cause of mortality in young children with survivors often having to live a life with severe developmental and neurological dysfunction. The aim of this hermeneutic phenomenological research study was to examine the lived experiences of nurses who care for children and their families admitted to hospital with a non-accidental head injury. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six nurses who had at least five years' experience of nursing children with NAHI. Following the interpretive approach described

Riga-Fede disease: a histological study and case report.

Acute traumatic ulcerations and granulomas of the oral mucosa may result from physical damage via sharp foodstuffs, accidental biting, or talking. Most ulcerations heal within days. Others become chronic, reactive, and exophytic. A histopathologically unique type of chronic traumatic ulceration is the traumatic ulcerative granuloma with stromal eosinophilia (TUGSE). TUGSE exhibits a deep "pseudoinvasive" inflammatory reaction. This lesion may occur under the tongue in infants as a result of chronic mucosal trauma caused by mandibular anterior primary teeth during nursing and is termed Riga-Fed

Aggressive management of necrotizing fasciitis through a multidisciplinary approach using minimal surgical procedures: a case report.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an aggressive, destructive infection of the soft tissue and fascia and is a life-threatening surgical emergency. A case study is presented of necrotizing fasciitis in the right lower extremity of a 53-year-old male resident of a long-term skilled nursing facility. Limb salvage was achieved through a multidisciplinary approach with early surgical management and aggressive postoperative management. Through 3 surgical procedures, the combined efforts of podiatric surgery, orthopaedic surgery, general/trauma surgery, and infectious disease provided early wound closure and

Preputial obstruction and urine-induced cellulitis due to nonnutritive suckling in a male white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawn.

A 73-d-old white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawn was diagnosed at necropsy with a ventral abdominal cellulitis secondary to urine after preputial swelling, urethral obstruction and hemorrhage, and focal urethral rupture. During the acute antemortem disease phase, the urinary obstruction tentatively was attributed to potential urethral uroliths, but after euthanasia, extensive gross and microscopic examinations of the urogenital tract revealed no uroliths. This fawn had been copenned with another male fawn, both of which exhibited nonnutritive suckling of the penmate's genitalia befor

Perception, assessment, treatment, and management of pain in the elderly.

Twenty to 50% of community elderly suffer from pain. Up to 80% of the institutionalized elderly report at least one pain problem. Multiple pain etiologies that occur in elderly patients may be the occurrence of multiple chronic diseases: osteoarthritis, RA, cancer, DJD, bone/joint disorders, osteoporosis, surgical pain, trauma, neuropathic pain, and nociceptive pain. The incidence of unrelieved pain inhibits respiration, decreases mobility, and decreases their functional status, which may lead to iatrogenic events, which include pneumonia, constipation and deep vein thrombosis. Pathophysiology and management of abdominal compartment syndrome.

Abdominal compartment syndrome is a potentially lethal condition caused by any event that produces intra-abdominal hypertension; the most common cause is blunt abdominal trauma. Increasing intra-abdominal pressure causes progressive hypoperfusion and ischemia of the intestines and other peritoneal and retroperitoneal structures. Pathophysiological effects include release of cytokines, formation of oxygen free radicals, and decreased cellular production of adenosine triphosphate. These processes may lead to translocation of bacteria from the gut and intestinal edema, predisposing patients to mu

Treatment of femoral shaft fractures with the Hoffmann external fixator in prepuberty.

Twenty-two children with femoral shaft fractures, between the age of 10 and 14 years, were treated with the Hoffmann external fixation apparatus from 1980 to 1985. This method of treatment is very simple. It requires less surgical exposure and allows earlier ambulation and easy nursing care. In addition, it makes patients comfortable in multiple trauma conditions. The average time to union and removal of fixators was 72 days (range, 44 to 80 days). There were no deep wound infections, nonunions, or rotationary deformities. On followup, all patients regained the range of motion of knee joints i

Exploring the role of trained surgical care nurses in cricothyrotomy and other emergency procedures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is a severe shortage of healthcare professionals, emphasized in a stark manner by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, where the mortality rate was primarily a consequence of medical professionals lacking the technical know-how for conducting specialized procedures. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the success rates of nurse-performed emergency surgeries, focusing on trauma care (e.g., cricothyrotomy), rural obstetric emergencies (e.g., caesarean section, hysterectomy), and general procedures (e.g., laparotomy, appendectomy). METHODS: A systemat
