OBJECTIVE: To determine the association of "pure" orbital fractures (POF) and "impure" orbital fractures (IOF) with ocular and periocular injuries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of patients with orbital fractures was designed. The predictor variable was the orbital's fracture configuration (pure versus impure). The primary outcome variables were ocular and periocular injuries classified as mild, moderate, and severe. The secondary outcome was the need for surgical repair. Standard statistics for patient characteristics, the Fisher exact test for categorical variables, and the M

INTRODUCTION: Rectal injuries have been historically treated with a combination of modalities including direct repair, resection, proximal diversion, presacral drainage, and distal rectal washout. We hypothesized that intraperitoneal rectal injuries may be selectively managed without diversion and the addition of distal rectal washout and presacral drainage in the management of extraperitoneal injuries are not beneficial.
METHODS: This is an American Association for the Surgery of Trauma multi-institutional retrospective study from 2004 to 2015 of all patients who sustained a traumatic rectal

AIM: Pelvic fractures constitute between 0.3% and 4% of all paediatric injuries, with a mortality rate up to 25%. This study aims to review the experience with pelvic fractures at Starship Children's Hospital and demonstrate its role as a marker of severe trauma.
METHODS: A retrospective review of children with pelvic fractures managed at our institution in the 20-year period between July 1995 and May 2015 was performed. The search identified 179 consecutive children admitted with a pelvic fracture. Data fields collected included patient details, mechanisms of injury, investigations performed

OBJECTIVES: Readmission after acute care is a significant contributor to health care costs, and has been proposed as a quality indicator. Our earlier studies showed that patients aged ≥55 years who are injured by falls from heights of ≤0.5 m were at increased risk for long-term mortality, compared to patients by high-velocity blunt trauma (higher fall heights, road injuries, and other blunt trauma). We hypothesized that these patients are also at higher risk of readmission, compared to patients injured by high-velocity mechanisms.
DESIGN AND MEASURES: Competing risks regression (all-cause unp

OBJECTIVES: Many studies have elaborated on the role of magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) in evaluating traumatic brachial plexopathies. Most of these deal with MR findings in adult traumatic plexopathies or children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP). Hence, the authors felt the need for this particular study, which focuses on MRN findings in children with non-obstetric traumatic brachial plexus palsy, to find out the distribution and severity of injuries in these patients.
METHODS: This was a single-institution, prospective study conducted between April 2015 and June 2016. All c

Many individuals worldwide are exposed to continuous traumatic stress (CTS). However, the psychiatric sequela of CTS and the relevance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnostic criteria in this situation have yet to be determined. Filling this gap, the present study assessed psychiatric reactions to CTS and the relationship between such reactions and functional impairment among two representative samples of adults exposed to ongoing shelling over 6 (n=387) and 9 years (n=468). Assessment included PTSD symptomatology (i.e., intrusion, avoidance, hyperarousal), anxiety, somatization, an

BACKGROUND: Penetrating upper extremity injury is a common encountered cause of significant loss of labor force and it is generally caused by sharp items. This article presents five rare cases of penetrating hand and forearm injury caused by blunt-edged items in conjunction with a detailed discussion of the mechanism and management of the injury.
METHODS: Five patients with a mean age of 37.6 were treated for upper extremity trauma caused by "blunt-edged items" such as corrugated iron fence, garden wires, iron stick or iron safety fence between 2009 to 2014. All patients were operated under g

PURPOSE: This study investigated the change in the fatality and severe injury risks in rear impacts with vehicle model years (MY) grouped prior to, during the phase-in and after the revision to FMVSS 301.
METHODS: FARS and NASS-CDS data were used to determine the injury risks of non-ejected occupants in light vehicles involving non-rollover, rear impacts. The data were analyzed by MY groups: 1996-2001, 2002-2007 and 2008+ to represent the years prior to, during the phase-in and post-revision phase-in of FMVSS 301. The 1996-2013 FARS data were analyzed for rear crashes defined by the initial c

PURPOSE: To develop a translated Dutch version of the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) and test its psychometric properties in a Dutch population with foot and ankle complaints.
METHODS: The CAIT was translated into the Dutch language using a forward-backward translation design. Of the 130 subsequent patients visiting the outpatient clinic for foot and ankle complaints who were asked to fill out a questionnaire containing the CAIT, the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS), and the numeric rating scale (NRS) pain, 98 completed the questionnaire. After a 1-week period, patients were aske

OBJECTIVE: To examine headache and depression over time in individuals who sustained mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Prevalence of headache and depression early after mTBI and at 1 year postinjury as well as the relationship between the two are evaluated.
BACKGROUND: Headache is the most common physical symptom and depression is among the most common psychiatric diagnosis after traumatic brain injury regardless of severity. Headache and depression have been found to be two independent factors related to poor outcome after mTBI, yet there appears to be a paucity of research exploring the c

BACKGROUND: Cycling is an attractive form of transport. It is beneficial to the individual as a form of physical activity that may fit more readily into an individual's daily routine, such as for cycling to work and to the shops, than other physical activities such as visiting a gym. Cycling is also beneficial to the wider community and the environment as a result of fewer motorised journeys. Cyclists are seen as vulnerable road users who are frequently in close proximity to larger and faster motorised vehicles. Cycling infrastructure aims to make cycling both more convenient and safer for cyc

BACKGROUND: Fat embolism syndrome is a potentially fatal complication of long bone fractures. It is usually seen in the context of polytrauma or a femoral fracture. There are few reports of fat embolism syndrome occurring after isolated long bone fractures other than those of the femur.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of fat embolism syndrome in a 33-year-old Caucasian man. He was being seen for an isolated Gustilo's grade II open tibial fracture. He was deemed clinically stable, so we proceeded to treat the fracture with intramedullary reamed nailing. He developed fat embolism syndrome

In western countries, it is hard to find an unoperated cleft palate due to better healthcare services and awareness. Here, we present an unoperated adult case of cleft palate that had midfacial fractures following a road traffic accident. The patient's cleft lip was repaired when he was 2 years old but the palate was not operated because of poor follow-up. We would like to share the difficulties encountered in diagnosis and treatment planning for this rare kind of trauma case. After routine investigations, a palatal acrylic splint was constructed for fixation and an acceptable degree of functi

BACKGROUND: Many existing scoring systems assess ankle function, but there is no evidence that any of them has been validated in a group of patients with a higher demand on their ankle function. Problems include ceiling effects, not being able to detect change or they do not contain a sports-subscale. The aim of this study was to create a validated self-administered scoring system for ankle injuries in the higher performing athlete.
METHODS: First, 26 patients were interviewed to solicit opinions needed to create the final score, which is modified from the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS).

Traumatic patellar dislocation is a common occurrence in adolescents. Treatment in the acute situation is controversial but should always address replacement or removal of osteochondral loose bodies. Reconstruction of the medial patellofemoral ligament in the acute and recurrent situation has provided excellent results in this select patient group.
