A 26-year-old female from India presented with progressive, unremitting low back pain for over 1 year. She had been treated unsuccessfully for left-sided sacroiliitis, pelvic floor dysfunction, ankylosing spondylitis and seronegative spondyloarthritis. MRI lumbar spine showed a Schmorl node with surrounding marrow oedema at L4, the relevance of which is not clear in literature. One year after initial presentation, a biopsy of this lesion revealed culture positive diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis. Despite advances in imaging, delayed diagnosis is not uncommon in spinal tuberculosis (TB). In our

The aim of this study was to determine the value of paraclinical investigations in the diagnosis of 32 adults with TB meningitis. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was found in spinal fluid cultures of 21 patients (66 p. 100). But only two had positive smears. In five with positive cultures the sampling was performed between one and 13 days after the beginning of chemotherapy. In 7 patients with negative spinal fluid cultures, mycobacterium tuberculosis was found in gastric contents aspiration (3); urine (2); bone marrow (1) and abscess (1). Cytochemical analysis of first spinal fluid samples showed

One-third of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Data reported in 2011 indicate, for the first time, a decline in cases of tuberculosis, despite persistent inequalities across geographic areas and increasing rates of drug resistance. Osteo-articular tuberculosis affects the spine in half the cases. Pharmacotherapy must be combined with surgery in patients with spinal cord or nerve root compression, large abscesses, or marked anterior column osteolysis with kyphosis and instability. The quality of debridement and bony fusion is optimal when the anterior approach

BACKGROUND Tuberculosis spondylitis, also known as Pott disease, is a rare form of the ancient infectious disease tuberculosis. It bears a complex clinical and radiological profile, often necessitating an extensive differential diagnostic approach for accurate identification. The disease was named in honor of the first diagnosed patient, highlighting its historical significance. CASE REPORT We report a case involving a 69-year-old male initially admitted to the Pulmonology Department under the suspicion of a left lung tumor, as indicated by a chest X-ray. A subsequent CT scan revealed a tumor-

Spinal tuberculosis or TB spondylitis is one of the most common types of extra pulmonary tuberculosis, which is about 15% of all cases. It causes severe morbidity, neurological deficits, and severe deformities in the patients. The growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in culture specimens obtained from infected tissue is the single gold standard diagnostic test for spinal TB. Toll-like receptor (TLR) is one of the important receptors in the first-line defence system against microbes. TLR-2 and TLR-4 are known to be associated with tuberculosis infection. Based on this background, the researcher

BACKGROUND: Extra Pulmonary Tuberculosis (EPTB) is a significant health problem in both developing and developed countries. Spinal tuberculosis (STB) is one of the significant forms of EPTB lacking epidemiological data. The present study was conducted to study the clinical, radiological, microbiological and histopathological features, treatment and outcome of Spinal tuberculosis.
METHODS: This study was conducted for a duration of 19 years, from 2000 to 2018 at the department of Neuromicrobiology, NIMHANS, Bengaluru. It comprised of 252 patients with STB. All patients were diagnosed with the

Tuberculosis can involve any organ system of the body. Although rare tuberculosis of nervous system (NS) is not uncommon in our country. In the nervous system tubercle bacilli can cause tuberculous meningitis, abscess , tuberculoma in brain & spinal cord. Untreated Central Nervous System (CNS) tuberculosis is devastating. Early diagnosis & prompt treatment of NS is essential to avoid morbidity & mortality. Tubercle bacilli causes chronic caseating granulomatous lesion. Tubercular meningitis presents with fever, headache, neck stiffness & cranial nerve palsy. Tuberculoma may present with headac

The dismal outcome of tuberculosis of the spine in the pre-antibiotic era has improved significantly because of the use of potent antitubercular drugs, modern diagnostic aids and advances in surgical management. MRI allows the diagnosis of a tuberculous lesion, with a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 88%, well before deformity develops. Neurological deficit and deformity are the worst complications of spinal tuberculosis. Patients treated conservatively show an increase in deformity of about 15 degrees . In children, a kyphosis continues to increase with growth even after the lesion has

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis may result in severe kyphotic deformity. Effective restoration of lordosis and correction of sagittal balance often requires invasive osteotomies associated with significant morbidity. The advantages of focusing on symptomatic management and staging in the initial treatment of these deformities have not been well reported to date.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors reported the case of a 64-year-old Vietnamese woman with a history of spinal tuberculosis who underwent anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) for symptomatic treatment of L5-S1 radiculopathy resulting from

The lesion of the accessory spinal nerve is often of iatrogenic origin. We report the case of an injury after a right jugulocarotid lymph node biopsy. A 30-year-old patient was referred for the treatment of right cervical lymphadenopathy suspected of tuberculosis. After the intervention and confirmation of tuberculosis diagnosis, the patient presented a functional impotence of the right shoulder and swarming of the right hand. The clinical examination found an active limitation of the shoulder, and a wasting of the upper bundle of the right trapezius muscle and the sternocleidomastoid. The EMG

OBJECTIVE: To explore the safety and effectiveness of polymethylmethacrylate-augmented screw fixation (PASF) in the treatment of elderly thoracolumbar tuberculosis combined with severe osteoporosis.
METHODS: The clinical data of 20 elderly patients with thoracolumbar tuberculosis and severe osteoporosis who underwent PASF after anterior or posterior debridement and bone grafting and met the selection criteria between December 2012 and December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 8 males and 12 females with an average age of 68.5 years (range, 65-72 years). T value of bone mineral d

PURPOSE: To draw attention to the increasing number of cases of spinal tuberculosis by an additional case presentation of cervical tuberculous abscess.
METHOD: A 54-year-old diabetic woman with neck and arm pain, weakness in four limbs was diagnosed spinal tuberculosis. MRI demonstrated epidural mass at C4-C5 level with destruction of these vertebral bodies. Diagnosis was confirmed by the clinical improvement after administration of antituberculous drugs.
RESULTS: After the drug therapy, improvement was observed in her neurological status. Follow-up MRI studies after 3 and 5 months showed di

We report two cases of tuberculosis in patients undergoing maintenance dialysis. In both cases Mycobacterium tuberculosis was not isolated in spite of multiple localizations and diagnosis was made with delay. Severe hypocalcemia was the main symptom in one patient, who had pulmonary, genito-urinary and spinal tuberculosis. The other patient had tuberculous lymphadenitis. The two patients survived their disease on antituberculous therapy. From the literature the authors give the actuarial data of tuberculosis occurring in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the most appropriate treatment protocol and to predict the prognosis for Pott's paraplegics with severe spinal deformity.
SETTING: Catholic University of Korea Medical Center and Moon-Kim's Institute of Orthopedic Research, Seoul, Korea from 1971 to 1996.
METHOD: In this study, there were 33 patients (eight children and 25 adults), ranging from 13 to 56 years of age. They developed spinal tuberculosis
