Personality disorders and cardiometabolic diseases: A Mendelian randomization study.

Observational studies have suggested the associations between personality disorders (PDs) and cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), though these may be biased by unmeasured confounding, including lifestyle factors or reverse causality. Mendelian randomization (MR) provides a novel approach to address these limitations by using genetic variants as instrumental variables, thereby minimizing environmental confounding and enabling causal inference. This study leverages MR to systematically evaluate causal relationships across 9 clinically relevant PDs and 8 major CMDs, offering genetic evidence to clar

Personality and impulsivity traits associated with problematic online gaming and poker playing.

Online gambling and gaming are associated with Problematic Usage of the Internet (PUI) in subgroups of individuals. This study aimed to assess how different personality dimensions are associated with PUI scores of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) players and online poker players, and to characterize common and specific personality traits of both groups in their association with PUI. Participants (N = 1144) were recruited online and assessed with the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Big Five Inventory and the Short UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale. Data were analyzed wi

New perspectives on Type A behavior: a psychiatric point of view.

OBJECTIVE: To propose an answer to Medicine's confusion about what Type A Behavior is. METHOD: To critically review early writings about Type A as well as current literature with a focus on five key articles which are frequently mentioned in medical and lay literature as containing relevant data undermining the Type A hypothesis. These five are critically evaluated for their definition of Type A, method of diagnosing Type A, nature of the cohort studied, and logic of their conclusions. RESULTS: There is a failure in the literature to distinguish between Axis I symptoms and Axis II personalit

Exploring the Association between Diabetes Distress and Personality Traits: Insights from the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the association between subjectively experienced levels of diabetes distress (DD) and personality traits (PTs), even when levels of DD appear stable over time. This study aimed to use the Alternative Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) to associate specific maladaptive PTs with experienced DD and to describe differences in the constellation of PTs between people with type 1 diabetes (PWT1D) and type 2 diabetes (PWT2D). METHODS: A total of 358 participants with diabetes mellitus (DM

Personality features of women with good outcome from restricting anorexia nervosa.

Personality characteristics were assessed in women who had physically and, in the majority, psychologically recovered from restricting anorexia nervosa at an 8- to 10-year follow-up. Personality dimensions were evaluated using the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire, the California Personality Inventory, and the Reid-Ware Scale. Women who had recovered from anorexia nervosa rated higher on risk avoidance, displayed greater restraint in emotional expression and initiative, and showed greater conformance to authority than age-matched normal women. On comparison with their sisters, the rec

[Prolonged states of virtual recovery after atypical pubertal schizophrenic episodes with over-valuation disorders of the "metaphysical intoxication" type].

Using clinical and follow-up methods of investigation the authors studied a number of patients with juvenile slowly progressive schizophrenia in whom the disease picture in youth was characterized by over-worship disturbances of the "metaphysical intoxication" type which were attended by marked social and occupational disadaptation. A group of patients (n = 25) was identified with a state of practical cure after youth. Three most characteristic patterns of personality changes in these patients were described. The dominant role in their structure was played by manifestations of delay of mental

[Psychopathology of the schizophrenic defect (creation of an integrated model of negative changes)].

An integrative model of schizophrenic defect is offered. The model presumes the negative changes to extend over all the levels of psychic activity, though in uneven manner, rather than be confined to a distinct sphere. In 200 schizophrenic patients the defect had a complicated structure integrating the negative changes of schizoid and pseudoorganic types. Extreme variants of integration of schizoid and pseudoorganic changes can be regarded as two distinct defect types with prevailing personality deformations (combination of verschroben-type changes with personality level decreasing) and the fa

Associations between dietary patterns derived using principal component analysis and personality traits in adults: a cross-sectional study.

The present study explored associations between the five personality traits (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness) and dietary patterns of apparently healthy individuals. Demographic, anthropometric, dietary, and personality data were obtained from 480 adults, up to 45 years of age, through self-completed questionnaires. Dietary habits were assessed via a validated for the population Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), whereas personality was evaluated with the validated Greek version of the 50-item International Personality Item Pool (IPIP). Five dietary p

Associations between neurolinguistic deficits and personality traits in people with epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION: People with epilepsy (PWE) have been hypothesized to have higher prevalence of personality disorders and cognitive disorders. The objective of this study was to investigate the controversial notion of "epileptic personality," a series of supposedly specific personality traits of people with epilepsy (PWE). METHODS: For this purpose, 29 individuals with Mesial Temporal lobe Epilepsy (MTLE) and 23 with Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) as confirmed by electroencephalography (EEG), MRI scans and clinical examination, underwent a thorough neuropsychological and personality assessmen

Hormone levels and personality traits in abusive and suicidal male alcoholics.

This study presents personality and biochemical correlates to abusive and suicidal behavior in 49 male alcoholics. Our hypothesis was that neuroendocrine and personality characteristics reflect a postulated regulatory mechanism that determines the direction of aggression either outward (abusive) or inward (suicidal). Eleven patients (22%) had physically abused someone on one occasion and 15 (31%) constituted a more violent subgroup with repeated instances of abuse. Thirteen (27%) had attempted suicide at least once. There was a significant positive correlation between the number of abusive and

[Paranoid personality disorder].

PARANOID PERSONALITY DISORDER. The paranoid personality disorder fascinates and worries health professionals, who are sometimes victims of aggressive claims from their patients. Overestimation of oneself, psychorigidity, distrust and relational hyperesthesia characterize the paranoid type of personality disorder. This disorder is often associated with co-morbidities which mask it and promote decompensation towards a delusional disorder with the risk of heteroaggressive acts or towards a severe depressive disorder with suicidal risk. On the basis of regular monitoring and exhaustive assesment,

[Psychoanalytic study of social withdrawal: grandiose narcissism and passive aggression due to insufficient maternal containing in childhood].

Two different types of pathology can cause social withdrawal: the narcissistic--schizoid personality organization (NSPO) type and the mild Asperger's syndrome (mild developmental disorders) type. Only the former type can be treated by psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In the childhood of both types, one may find traumatic family environments which will result in social withdrawal (Hikikomori). In the infancy of the NSPO type, the mother fails to function as a sufficient container of the child's emotion, which encourages formation of a schizoid personality organization i.e. the psychic withdrawal (

Brittle diabetes: psychopathological aspects.

BACKGROUND: The term "brittle" is used to described an uncommon subgroup of type I diabetics whose lives are disrupted by severe glycaemic instability with repeated and prolonged hospitalization. Psychosocial problems are the major perceived underlying causes of brittle behaviour. Aim of this study is a systematic psychopathological assessment of brittleness using specific parameters of general psychopathology and personality traits following the multiaxial format (axis I and II) of the current DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for mental disorders. METHODS: Patients comprised 21 brittle type I d

Personality, addiction, dopamine: insights from Parkinson's disease.

In rare instances, patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may become addicted to their own medication or develop behavioral addictions such as pathological gambling. This is surprising because PD patients typically have a very low incidence of drug abuse and display a personality type that is the polar opposite of the addictive personality. These rare addictive syndromes, which appear to result from excessive dopaminergic medication use, illustrate the link between dopamine, personality, and addiction. We describe the clinical phenomena and attempt to relate them to current models of learning

Personality characteristics and the risk of breast cancer: a prospective cohort study.

Various personality characteristics have been suggested to increase the risk of breast cancer but reliable epidemiologic data on this issue are limited. We prospectively investigated the relationship between personality characteristics and the risk of breast cancer in 12,499 Finnish women aged 18 years or more. In health questionnaires in 1975 and 1981, these women completed at least one of the following personality scales: Eysenck extroversion, Bortner type A behaviour and author-constructed measure of hostility. They also reported about other potential breast cancer risk factors. From 1976-1
