Urinary incontinence (UI) is a disease affecting quality of life of 200 million patients worldwide. It is characterized by involuntary loss of urine. The factors involved are cystitis, detrusor hyperreflexia, spinal injury, benign prostatic hyperplasia, etc. The surge in the number of reviews on this subject indicates the amount of research devoted to this field. The prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate but unfortunately, only a few medications are currently available for this condition. There are peripheral as well as central targets including cholinergic, vanilloid, prostaglandin, ki…

PURPOSE: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and urge urinary incontinence (UUI) have different mechanisms of action. We believe that alteration of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity may contribute to UUI because the lower urinary tract is regulated through the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Heart rate variability (HRV) allows measurement of autonomic nervous function, therefore we measured and compared HRV parameters in women with urinary incontinence.
METHODS: From March 2008 to March 2010, we evaluated all patients who visited 2 university hospitals for treatment of ur…

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Evidence varies on the relation between parity and urgency or urge incontinence (UUI). We used data from the General Longitudinal Overactive Bladder Evaluation to determine whether differences in case definitions could account for variation in findings.
METHODS: We simulated case criteria to correspond to studies of urgency, UUI, and parity using data from 1,880 patients. Logistic models were run for each case-control scenario corresponding to previously used case definitions.
RESULTS: Parity was significantly associated with urgency (odds ratios (OR) 1.70; CI: 1

Urinary incontinence is a common symptom experienced by significant numbers of adult women. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the most frequently encountered type and affects around 50% of incontinent females. Many affected women do not consult their doctors about this troublesome symptom perhaps based on a belief that they cannot be helped. Recent years have seen the development of several new and popular techniques for the surgical treatment of this condition and many of the "gold standard" procedures for stress incontinence have been challenged. Currently, evidence in favor of the use of…

It has been established that the lower urinary tract is sensitive to the effects of estrogen, sharing a common embryological origin with the female genital tract, the urogenital sinus. Urge urinary incontinence is more prevalent after the menopause, and the peak prevalence of stress incontinence occurs around the time of the menopause. Many studies, however, indicate that the prevalence of stress incontinence falls after the menopause. Until recently, estrogen, usually as part of a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) regimen, was used for treatment of urinary incontinence in postmenopausal women…

Ectopic ureter accounts with an incidence of 1 in 2000 newborns. When present, ectopic ureter can be associated with duplex kidneys in an 85 % of the cases. Clinical manifestations of this malformation include incontinence and urinary tract infections. Ectopic ureter frequently occurs in association with a dysplastic upper pole renal moiety. When a poorly functioning upper pole segment is present, a standard surgical treatment is upper pole heminephrectomy. A 23-years old woman presented with left renal colic pain, fever and urinary leak. Ultrasound, intravenous pyelogram and antegrade pyelogr

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a major urologic health problem and the number of patients with SUI will rise dramatically as the population of elderly people continues to increase in Japan. This condition causes unnecessary and detrimental psychological distress, social isolation, and public expense for care. Surgery remains the cornerstone of treatment for female SUI and also in those who have failed to improve with conservative measures. Many surgical procedures, however, have been described with varying degree of success. The ideal surgical treatment for this disease should be effecti…

PURPOSE: We compared the prevalence of urinary incontinence by type among white, black, Hispanic and Asian-American women.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The RRISK is a population based cohort study of 2,109 randomly selected middle-aged and older women. Incontinence and other variables were assessed by self-report questionnaires and in person interviews. Labor and delivery and surgical data were abstracted from medical records archived since 1946. Logistic regression was used to estimate the OR with 95% CIs for incontinence while adjusting for covariates.
RESULTS: The age adjusted prevalence of wee…

Urinary incontinence is an unpleasant, unwanted and distressing problem that is common among women in the UK. A recent study (Hunskarr et al, 2004) estimated that 10 million women in the UK suffer with urinary incontinence. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the most common form, affecting four million women. The International Continence Society defines SUI as 'the complaint of involuntary leakage [of urine] on effort or exertion, or on sneezing or coughing' (Abrams et al, 2002).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of continence pessaries for the management of urinary incontinence in women.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the records of 100 women who chose to try a pessary to treat their urinary incontinence. Demographic data, presenting symptoms, physical findings, results of objective testing (pad tests and urodynamics), and incontinence outcomes were abstracted. Factors such as age, pelvic prolapse, presenting symptoms, pessary type, and history of previous incontinence surgery were examined using the Student t-test, chi-square test, or Fisher exact test wh…

Physiotherapy including pelvic floor muscle exercises, vaginal cones, biofeedback or electrical stimulation can be recommended as first step therapy for genuine stress incontinence. However physiotherapy has its limitations: 30% of women do not improve at all and only 10 to 20% of women are totally dry after treatment. In case of failure or insufficient response, surgery must be considered. Until recently, the gold standard for the treatment of urinary incontinence was the "Burch" procedure. However the surgical approach has been considerably modified since the introduction by Ulmsten in 1995 …

Urinary incontinence can be a symptom of a variety of reversible conditions. Common and reversible causes of urinary incontinence include polyuria, exposure to irritants (including concentrated urine), infection, urinary retention, use of pharmaceuticals, stool impaction or constipation, atrophic urethritis or vaginitis, restricted mobility or dexterity, psychological conditions, and delirium or acute confused state. Healthcare professionals can use existing assessment strategies, tools, and parameters to guide decisions and treatment options to manage these conditions. First-line assessment t…

PURPOSE: We recorded uroflowmetry at home in boys with urinary incontinence and correlated the results with videourodynamics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine boys (mean age 8.4 +/- 2.0 years) with urinary incontinence underwent home uroflowmetry for 1 weekend. Artifactual spikes in 1 or more uroflow curves were present in 16 home uroflowmetry recordings. One patient, in whom none of the uroflow curves was interpretable, was excluded from the study. Of the remaining 38 boys 18 had monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis, and 20 had nocturnal enuresis and diurnal voiding symptoms. Percentage expe…
