SIAgent: Spatial Interaction Agent via LLM-Powered Eye-Hand Motion Intent Understanding in VR.

Eye-hand coordinated interaction is becoming a mainstream interaction modality in Virtual Reality (VR) user interfaces. Current paradigms for this multimodal interaction require users to learn predefined gestures and memorize multiple gesture-task associations, which can be summarized as an "Operation-to-Intent" paradigm. This paradigm increases users' learning costs and has low interaction error tolerance. In this paper, we propose SIAgent, a novel "Intent-to-Operation" framework allowing users to express interaction intents through natural eye-hand motions based on common sense and habits. O

Personalized Wrist-Forearm Static Gesture Recognition Using the Vicara Kai Controller and Convolutional Neural Network.

Predefined, user-independent gesture sets do not account for individual differences in movement patterns and physical limitations. This study presents a personalized wrist-forearm static gesture recognition system for human-computer interaction (HCI) using the Vicara KaiTM wearable controller and a convolutional neural network (CNN). Unlike the system based on fixed, predefined gestures, the proposed approach enables users to define and train their own gesture sets. During gesture recording, users may either select a gesture pattern from a predefined prompt set or create their own natural, unp

Intraoral scanner-based virtual facebow transferring: A chairside dental technique.

Accurately mounting dental casts on an articulator is an essential step in prosthetic treatments. In digital dentistry, virtual articulator mounting procedures rely on virtual facebow records. However, virtual facebow records usually require devices like face scanners or jaw motion tracking systems that are not commonly available in most dental practices. The present technique report describes a straightforward intraoral scanner-based virtual facebow transfer approach. In this technique, a reference facebow joint support was first scanned and aligned with a virtual articulator. Then, a patient

Synchrotron "virtual archaeozoology" reveals how Ancient Egyptians prepared a decaying crocodile cadaver for mummification.

Although Ancient Egyptians mummified millions of animals over the course of one millennium, many details of these mummification protocols remain unknown. Multi-scale propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography was used to visualise an ancient Egyptian crocodile mummy housed at the Musée des Confluences (Lyon, France). This state-of-the-art non-destructive imaging technique revealed the complete interior anatomy of the mummy in three dimensions. Here, we present detailed insight into the complex post-mortem treatment of a decaying crocodile cadaver in preparation for mummificat

A comparison of the performance of 2.5 to 3.5-year-old children without disabilities using animated and cursor-based scanning in a contextual scene.

Although recent evidence suggests learning demands for children can be reduced by organizing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) displays in contextual scenes, there is little evidence on how such scenes could be made accessible for children who cannot use direct selection. Using a line drawn scene of a living room, a traditional traveling cursor (a green outline of objects within the scene) was compared with sequential animation-logically matching the function of items in the scene (e.g., hands of a clock moving, a lamp turning on and off, etc.). After three learning sessions, on

Validating Touch Surgery™: A cognitive task simulation and rehearsal app for intramedullary femoral nailing.

BACKGROUND: The role of simulation in orthopaedic surgical training is becoming increasingly evident, as simulation allows repeated sustained practice in an environment that does not harm the patient. Previous studies have shown that the cognitive aspects of surgery are of equal if not greater importance in developing decision making than the practical aspects. AIM: To observe construct, content and face validity of four IFN modules on a cognitive simulator, Touch Surgery™. METHODS: 39 novices and 10 experts were recruited to complete four simulation modules on surgical decision-making that

Simulation of the impact of refractive surgery ablative laser pulses with a flying-spot laser beam on intrasurgery corneal temperature.

PURPOSE: To evaluate ablation algorithms and temperature changes in laser refractive surgery. METHODS: The model (virtual laser system [VLS]) simulates different physical effects of an entire surgical process, simulating the shot-by-shot ablation process based on a modeled beam profile. The model is comprehensive and directly considers applied correction; corneal geometry, including astigmatism; laser beam characteristics; and ablative spot properties. RESULTS: Pulse lists collected from actual treatments were used to simulate the temperature increase during the ablation process. Ablation ef

Prolonged exposure and virtual reality-enhanced imaginal exposure for PTSD following a terrorist bulldozer attack: a case study.

In this case study, virtual reality was used to augment imaginal exposure in a protocol based on prolonged exposure. A 29-year-old male patient developed posttraumatic stress disorder after surviving a deadly terrorist bulldozer attack on two civilian buses and several cars in Jerusalem; the traumas witnessed by the survivor included a decapitation. The crowded bus in which the patient was riding was pushed over onto its side by the terrorist, injuring, trapping, and terrifying the passengers and causing gasoline to leak. Guided by his therapist, the patient entered an immersive computer-gener

Virtual reality cognitive behavior therapy for public speaking anxiety: a randomized clinical trial.

Public speaking anxiety (PSA) is a common phobia. Although cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is preferred, difficulties arise with the exposure component (lack of therapist control, patient's inability to imagine, self-flooding, loss of confidentiality resulting from public exposure). Virtual reality CBT (VRCBT) enables a high degree of therapist control, thus overcoming these difficulties. This study examined whether VRCBT is an alternative to CBT. Participants with PSA were randomly assigned to VRCBT (28 participants), CBT (30 participants), and wait list control (WLC; 30 participants). VRCBT

Design of a two-level Adaptive Multi-Agent System for malaria vectors driven by an ontology.

BACKGROUND: The understanding of heterogeneities in disease transmission dynamics as far as malaria vectors are concerned is a big challenge. Many studies while tackling this problem don't find exact models to explain the malaria vectors propagation. METHODS: To solve the problem we define an Adaptive Multi-Agent System (AMAS) which has the property to be elastic and is a two-level system as well. This AMAS is a dynamic system where the two levels are linked by an Ontology which allows it to function as a reduced system and as an extended system. In a primary level, the AMAS comprises organiz

Assessing surgical skill training under hazardous conditions in a virtual environment.

The present study examined the performance of a surgical procedure under simulated combat conditions. Eleven residents performed a cricothyroidotomy on a mannequin-based simulator in a fully immersive virtual environment running a combat simulation with a virtual sniper under both day and night time lighting conditions. The results showed that completion times improved between the first and second attempt and that differences between day and night time conditions were minimal. However, three participants were killed by the virtual sniper before completing the procedure. These results suggest t

Poxvirus Bioinformatics Resource Center: a comprehensive Poxviridae informational and analytical resource.

The Poxvirus Bioinformatics Resource Center (PBRC) has been established to provide informational and analytical resources to the scientific community to aid research directed at providing a better understanding of the Poxviridae family of viruses. The PBRC was specifically established as the result of the concern that variola virus, the causative agent of smallpox, as well as related viruses, might be utilized as biological weapons. In addition, the PBRC supports research on poxviruses that might be considered new and emerging infectious agents such as monkeypox virus. The PBRC consists of a r

Training with computer-supported motor imagery in post-stroke rehabilitation.

Converging lines of evidence suggest that motor imagery (the mental simulation of a motor act within working memory) is associated with subliminal activation of the motor system. This observation has led to the hypothesis that cortical activation during motor imagery may affect the acquisition of specific motor skills and help the recovery of motor function. In this paper, we describe a clinical protocol in which we use interactive tools to stimulate motor imagery in hemiplegic stroke patients, thereby helping them to recover lost motor function. The protocol consists of an inpatient and an ou

The effectiveness of virtual reality for dental pain control: a case study.

The present study explored whether immersive virtual reality can serve as an effective non-pharmacologic analgesic for dental pain. Two patients (aged 51 and 56 years old) with adult periodontitis, a chronic, progressive inflammatory disease that affects gums, ligaments, and bones around the teeth, were studied in the treatment room of a periodontist. Each patient received periodontal scaling and root planing (scraping off/removing plaque deposits below the gum line, hereafter referred to as scaling) under three treatment conditions: (1) virtual reality distraction, (2) movie distraction, and

[Calculating the localization and dimension of the real pupil in keratoconus with ray tracing of corneal topography data].

BACKGROUND: It is crucial to center surgical procedures for optical indications on the pupil or the optical axis of the eye. In keratoconus the pupil appears to be dislocated due to optical aberrations of corneal topography. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the real pupil structure from the virtual image using exact raytracing techniques. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with keratoconus (46 with mild and 42 with severe clinical signs) and a control group of 40 normal subjects were included in this study. Topographic height data were calculated from refraction data of a co

Exploiting co-adaptation for the design of symbiotic neuroprosthetic assistants.

The success of brain-machine interfaces (BMI) is enabled by the remarkable ability of the brain to incorporate the artificial neuroprosthetic 'tool' into its own cognitive space and use it as an extension of the user's body. Unlike other tools, neuroprosthetics create a shared space that seamlessly spans the user's internal goal representation of the world and the external physical environment enabling a much deeper human-tool symbiosis. A key factor in the transformation of 'simple tools' into 'intelligent tools' is the concept of co-adaptation where the tool becomes functionally involved in
