PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between human leukocyte antigen (HLA-DR15) specificity and intermediate uveitis.
METHODS: Eighteen patients diagnosed with intermediate uveitis underwent HLA-DR15 serotyping. Additionally, DNA-based phenotyping for a specific HLA-DR15 allele was performed in four patients. The clinical features of HLA-DR15-positive intermediate uveitis were compared with those of HLA-DR15-negative intermediate uveitis.

PURPOSE: To define uveitis associated with leptospirosis in a clinical setting.
METHODS: We present the clinical features of 73 consecutive cases of uveitis linked clinically to an outbreak of systemic leptospirosis in patients with antibodies to Leptospira species who were examined from January to September 1994.

Uveitis is a commonly misdiagnosed ophthalmic condition with a wide aetiological base and often the cause cannot be established. Uveitis can be associated with systemic diseases like feline infectious peritonitis, feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukaemia virus, lymphoma, toxoplasmosis and canine ehrlichiosis. The classification and general clinical signs of uveitis are discussed. Applicable clinical cases, manifestations and diagnostic methods of the selected diseases are mentioned, and a general approach to the treatment of uveitis is given.

The authors present an account of surgery of complicated cataract in 20 patients with anterior and intermediate uveitis. During a one-year follow-up period they evaluate the difference of postoperative development and visual acuity in extracapsular extraction without or with implantation of an intraocular lens. In the study of uveitis, epidemiology is frequently neglected. Our uveitis register consisted of data collected on all uveitis patients except minor, easily resolved, anterior uveitis cases at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. The diagnoses of these patients were classified by the aetiological method. A total of 712 patients was entered into the register over a period of 10 years starting from January 1985. OBJECTIVE: To assess the possible involvement of the bowel in the spectrum of anterior uveitis (AU).
METHODS: Ileocolonoscopy and histology studies were performed on 27 patients with AU.
RESULTS: Patients with AU had a higher incidence of chronic intestinal inflammation (CII) than controls. CII was present in AU regardless of HLA-B27 status, sacroiliitis or NSAID intake, and was more prevalent in uveitis with high recurrence.
