Apert's syndrome is a rare form of craniosynostosis that exhibits with many ocular manifestations. We present two cases of Apert's syndrome. Our first case is a 10-year-old girl admitted with exotropia, V pattern and proptosis on examination. Investigations revealed coronal craniosynostosis, cleft palate, vaginal atresia and syndactyly of the hands and feet. The second case is a 5-year-old boy presented with hypertelorism, exotropia, dissociated vertical deviation and proptosis. Investigations revealed coronal craniosynostosis, bifid uvula and syndactyly of the hands and feet.

A 5-year-old boy with a history of a bifid uvula and a submucosal cleft palate presented for evaluation of brittle nails. The physical examination demonstrated cup-shaped ears, a broad nasal root, thin upper lip, mid-facial hypoplasia, coarse hair, and twenty-nail dystrophy. The clinical presentation of ectodermal dysplasia with cleft palate was consistent with Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome, which is one of several allelic diseases associated with mutations in the TP63 gene. The clinical manifestations of Rapp-Hodgkin as well as other ectodermal dysplasias with clefting are discussed.

Pictorial analogies are a descriptive modality often employed to convey radiological (as well as clinical and pathological) appearances. Examples of this useful descriptive device abound and many anatomical terms take their origin from such analogies. The cauda equina (horse's tail) and the uvula (grape) are but two classic examples. A radiographic appearance resembling a 'winking ogre' on computed tomography of the lumbosacral junction is described. This appearance is encountered in cases scanned following myelography, where one of the (left or right) first sacral nerve roots is compressed by…

A case is described in which it was found at autopsy that the umbilical cord of a macerated stillborn infant had four patent vessels (two arteries and two veins) throughout its length. This was due to a rare persistence of the caudal portion of the right umbilical vein. The infant had multiple congenital anomalies including complete thoracic ectopia cordis, a symmetrical bifid liver, severe bilateral cleft lip and palate with absent soft palate and uvula , and cecum mobile. The autopsy findings are detailed and the relevant literature and embryology briefly discussed.

We report two sisters with Neuhäuser [megalocornea, macrocephaly, mental and motor retardation MMMM] syndrome. They also had hypotonia, incomplete cleft palate, bifid uvula, depressed nasal bridge, epicanthal folds, hypoplastic labia major, micrognathia and pectus excavatum. Their brain magnetic resonance imaging showed cortical atrophy, large fourth ventricle and hypoplasia of corpus callosum. These findings have not been reported before in MMMM syndrome. Prenatal sonography could have been helpful if the mother had asked for genetic counseling given the presence of hypoplasia of corpus callo…

Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), a subset of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), involves the palatine tonsils, soft palate, base of tongue, and uvula, with the ability to spread to adjacent subsites. Personalized treatment strategies for Human Papillomavirus-associated squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx (HPV+OPSCC) are yet to be established. In this article, we summarise our current understanding of the pathogenesis of HPV+OPSCC, the intrinsic role of the immune system, current ICI clinical trials, and the potential role of small molecule immunotherapy in HPV+O…

The emergency physician must be aware of the varied ways in which epiglottitis can present. This report discusses two adult patients who presented with symptoms and signs indicative of uvulitis who were found to have associated epiglottitis. Neither patient reported respiratory difficulty but both experienced significant pain upon swallowing and were febrile with an enlarged, erythematous uvula. Management consisted of close observation and treatment with an intravenous antibiotic and corticosteroid. The emergency physician should consider the possibility of coexistent epiglottitis in the adul…

Effect of electrolytic lesion in vestibulo-cerebellar area of male Wistar rats was investigated on duodenal alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity. Histomorphological observations of brain indicated, that extensive lesion restricted to the wide area of nodule including ventral uvula, resulted in significant fall of AP activity at the mucosal brush border within 20 days. A comparative behavioural study in experimental and control groups by openfield test indicated that, sympathoexcitation resulting from vestibulo-cerebellar lesion may contribute to significant alteration of AP activity in duodenum …

A case with oral Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is reported that regressed during therapy with Zidovudine (AZT) which was started 5 months after the first dermal and oral tumours were noted. After 6 months of treatment the absolute number of T-helper cells had increased from 54/microliters to 232/microliters and the ratio of T-helper to T-suppressor cells from 0.15 to 0.3. During the same time the lesions of KS on the gingiva, uvula and the body as well as the face disappeared. The lesion of KS on the hard palate regressed.

Vestibular stimulation, by means of sinusoidal electrical polarization of the labyrinths of decerebrate cats, can produce vomiting and related activity resembling that seen in motion sickness. The symptoms include panting, salivation, swallowing, and retching as well as vomiting. These symptoms can be produced in cats with lesions of the posterior cerebellar vermis. In contrast to a previous proposal by Wang and Chinn in 1956, we suggest that a transcerebellar pathway from the vestibular apparatus through the nodulus and uvula to the 'vomiting center' is not essential for vestibular-induced vo…

A case of bilateral peritonsillar abscesses is reported. The patient was a 31-year-old male presenting with a severe sore throat, dysphagia, trismus and bilateral swelling of the soft palate causing no displacement of the uvula. Incision and drainage (I and D) and an interval tonsillectomy cured this condition. On review of the literature, it was noted that bilateral peritonsillar abscesses are not uncommon. Peritonsillar abscesses possibly occur bilaterally, but as the developmental stages of the abscesses are not simultaneous, immediate tonsillectomy or intensive antibiotic treatment followi…

A 46-year-old female patient presented to our hospital with history of pharyngeal discomfort for 6 months. Physical examination showed that she had facial asymmetry, loss of the left nasolabial fold, rightward de- viation of uvula, swelling of the left soft palate. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a bigger neoplasm in left pa- rapharyngeal space which invaded into left lateral skull base. The left internal carotid artery, vein and the styloid process was jostled backward. The primary clinical diagnosis is pleomorphic adenoma of the parapharyngeal space.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Proper breathing is essential to healthy growth and development of children. The present study aimed to investigate changes in the pharyngeal airway space in primary-school children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 93 primary-school children, who were divided into three age groups (Group I, aged 7-8 years; Group II, aged 9-10 years; and Group III, aged 11-12 years). Landmarks identified on each cephalogram included the tip of the uvula (U), hyoid bone (H), and epiglottis (E). Linear and angular measurements comprised nasopharyngeal airwa…

METHODS: After noti … ) out of 126 cleft palate repairs (both fistulas were located at the anterior hard palate). A split uvula was identified in 2 of 59 patients where the status of the uvula was reported (3.4%).
CONCLUSION: This study summarizes one of the lowest overall fistula rates reported in the literature. In a tertiary-care academic setting, plastic surgery residen …

In 18 patients a dysmorphic syndrome was observed and in 83% a conductive hearing loss which resolved after palatoplasty (often in combination with adenotomy and insertion of ventilation tubes).
