BACKGROUND: The unsatisfactory percentage for ThinPrep Pap Tests (TPPT) at our institution reached the 75th percentile (2.7%) benchmark established by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Our aim was to identify outliers by analysis of data, provide education and feedback, and establish a system to monitor outcomes.
METHODS: The laboratory information system (LIS) was queried for TPPT cases diagnosed as 'Non-diagnostic' between April and June 2022. Two hundred and thirty-two cases were identified and reviewed by 2 cytopathologists and 1 cytotechnologist to identify limiting factors, in

BACKGROUND: Primary Vaginal Melanoma (PVM) is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy, accounting for only 0.3-0.8% of all female melanomas, with an extremely poor prognosis.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to present the diagnostic process, surgical management, and postoperative chemotherapy options in a patient initially diagnosed with vaginal neuroendocrine carcinoma, later confirmed to have PVM. Additionally, we provide a systematic review to enhance awareness of PVM, reduce misdiagnosis, and improve early detection.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted, and a case re

Vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN), a precancerous lesion associated with human papillomavirus (HPV), impacts women's health and quality of life. However, the natural progression of VaIN after hysterectomy remains uncertain, due to its low incidence. The existing literature predominantly consists of single-center retrospective studies lacking robust evidence-based medicine. The management of VaIN after hysterectomy is diverse and controversial, lacking a consensus on the optimal approach. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate the development of VaIN after hysterectomy, emphasizing t

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Vaginal leiomyomas are uncommon benign tumors of the genital district that appear as a circumscribed, mobile, and nontender mass along the vaginal tube. The gold standard of vaginal leiomyoma management is surgical treatment. We aimed to present a clinical case of vaginal leiomyoma successfully treated throughout a transvaginal excision and layered repair.
METHODS: A 44-year-old woman was referred to our division for vaginal bulging symptoms and dyspareunia. Clinical examination revealed a 4-5 cm hard bulging mass in the anterior vaginal wall, below the urethra, c

Cervical cell detection is crucial to cervical cytology screening at early stage. Currently most cervical cell detection methods use anchor-based pipeline to achieve the localization and classification of cells, e.g. faster R-CNN and YOLOv3. However, the anchors generally need to be pre-defined before training and the detection performance is inevitably sensitive to these pre-defined hyperparameters (e.g. number of anchors, anchor size and aspect ratios). More importantly, these preset anchors fail to conform to the cells with different morphology at inference phase. In this paper, we present

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a malignant soft tissue neoplasm, is 1 of the most common pediatric tumors of the vagina. Although radical surgery has been replaced with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and conservative surgery, the use of vaginoscopy is still uncommon. We present the case of an infant who underwent vaginoscopic resection because of botryoid sarcoma at 9 months of age.

OBJECTIVE: Epithelioid angiosarcoma of the vagina is a rare variant that can easily be misdiagnosed considering the much higher frequency of epithelial neoplasms at that particular site.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report the case of a 41-year-old gravida 2, para 1, aborta 1, with no prior history of irradiation, who consulted after the discovery of 3 lesions at the lower right portion of the vagina.
RESULT: The lesion consisted of epithelioid cells with high-grade nuclei and prominent nucleoli. These cells expressed CD31, CD34, factor VIII, Fli-1, vimentin, smooth muscle actin, and WT-1. Kerat

Treatment of vaginal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) with conservative approaches is presently the standard of care. Intravaginal high-dose rate brachytherapy is a very effective treatment while sparing the normal tissue to preserve growth, fertility and prevent organ dysfunction. In this report, we describe the management of an infant with Stage I vaginal RMS, treated with chemotherapy, maximal safe resection and intravaginal brachytherapy using a customized mold and MRI and CT-based three-dimensional (3D) conformal planning, followed by a critical review of the literature.

Here we present a rare case of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of vagina treated successfully with wide local excision and post-operative radiotherapy. There was no recurrence even after four years.

We report a case of a vaginal yolk sac tumor in a 5-month-old female infant who presented with short history of bleeding per vagina. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass occupying most of the vagina that had lobulated outlines and heterogeneous echo texture. The serum alpha-fetoprotein was elevated, and a biopsy revealed a vaginal yolk sac tumor. The patient was given six cycles of chemotherapy and continues to be disease-free on follow up. To preserve sexual and reproductive function, we encourage consideration of chemotherapy as a sole modality to treat this rare tumor.

The authors of this article present a case of a woman diagnosed with a vaginal melanoma who developed paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS) soon after diagnosis. A review of the literature regarding PNSs in gynecological malignancies is also described in this article. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration with opsoclonus myoclonus secondary to a vaginal melanoma. In addition, our patient had an unusually acute progression to pancerebellar symptoms over the course of 3 weeks. Her paraneoplastic symptoms improved significantly after partial resection

BACKGROUND: Aggressive angiomyxoma (AA) is an uncommon, slow growing, locally infiltrative but non-metastasizing, distinctive mesenchymal tumor that predominantly affects the pelvis and perineum of premenopausal women. The mainstay of treatment is local excision with tumor-free margins; however, recurrences are common and related to inadequate primary excision.
CASE: A pedunculated 3-cm mass arising from the vaginal suburethral area in a 49-year-old premenopausal woman was resected around the base of its pedicle. Microscopic examination revealed numerous blood vessels of various sizes set in

OBJECTIVES: Granular cell myoblastoma (Abricosov's tumor) is an uncommon benign tumor of mesodermal origin of which no more than sixty cases with genital involvement have been reported. Among the genital organs, the labium majus of the vulva are the predilect site.
STUDY DESIGN: The authors describe a case of the Abricosov's tumor in woman aged 58 years which became directed to Department of Gynecology & Obstetric in Hospital of Słupsk on account suspicions of vagina tumor.
RESULTS: The origin and nature of granular cell myoblastoma have been debated since the original description of a granu

The principal goal of Pap smear screening is to detect those abnormalities of the cervix that require definitive diagnostic intervention. Any mainstream screening of the population should also seek to increase the participation of women belonging to groups with special needs, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, women of non English speaking background, women with disabilities and older unscreened women. As it is not always possible to obtain endocervical cells, the importance of a Pap smear for individual women is questioned. This article examines the various sampling techniqu
