Diagnostic performance of two molecular assays for the detection of vaginitis in symptomatic women.

The three main causes of vaginitis are bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), and trichomoniasis (TV). Two multiplex assays are commercially available for detection of DNA from organisms associated with vaginitis: BD Affirm™ VPIII Microbial Identification Test (Affirm) and BD MAX™ Vaginal Panel (MAX VP). Here, the performance of MAX VP was compared to that of Affirm, which was considered the standard of care. Four vaginal swabs were collected from each subject with the following: BD Affirm™ VPIII Ambient Temperature Transport System (ATTS), BD MAX™ UVE Specimen Collection Ki…

Sexual behaviour and extra-genital colonisation in women treated for recurrent Candida vulvo-vaginitis.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyses a relation between sexual habits and the presence of Candida in extra-genital locations as well as a potential effect on therapy response. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Candida cultures were obtained from mouth, nose, anus, urine and perineum of 117 women enrolled in a RVVC treatment trial (ReCiDiF). Sexual behaviour and carriage rates of extra-genital Candida of women responding well to treatment were compared to that of non-responders. RESULTS: Most respondents were heterosexual. All but one practiced vaginal sex. Regular receptive oral sex was not related to multipl

[The first case of persistent vaginitis due to Aspergillus protuberus in an immunocompetent patient].

The vast majority of vaginal fungal infections are caused by Candida species. However, vaginitis cases caused by molds are extremely rare. Aspergillus protuberus is previously known as a member of Aspergillus section Versicolores which can cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients, however it has recently been described as a seperate species. Although the members of Aspergillus section Versicolores have been isolated rarely in cases of pulmonary infections, eye infections, otomycosis, osteomyelitis and onycomycoses, to the best of our knowledge, there is no published case of…

Accuracy of the clinical diagnosis of vaginitis compared with a DNA probe laboratory standard.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis of the three most common causes of acute vulvovaginal symptoms (bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis vaginitis, and trichomoniasis vaginalis) using a traditional, standardized clinical diagnostic protocol compared with a DNA probe laboratory standard. METHODS: This prospective clinical comparative study had a sample of 535 active-duty United States military women presenting with vulvovaginal symptoms. Clinical diagnoses were made by research staff using a standardized protocol of history, physical examination including pelvic examinati…

[Streptococcus group B--association with Aerobic vaginitis and ability to human cell lines activation].

The aim of this study was to estimate: the frequency of aerobic vaginitis, susceptibility of the GBS isolated from vagina of non-pregnant women with and without cervicitis to selected antibiotics and chemotherapeutics and the proinflammatory cytokines production by HeLa, THP-I, U - 937 cells after stimulation by vaginal GBS. Our results indicated low frequency of the aerobic vaginitis -4.5% among non-pregnant young women and ability of the vaginal GBS to release proinflammatory cytokines by human cell lines in vitro.

Frequency of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and infectious agents for vaginitis in menstrual cycle phase.

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to verify differences in the diagnosis of infectious agents and CIN in cytological smears in the prolifer … secretory phase of the menstrual cycle (p < 0.0001). When the presence of CIN associated with vulvovaginitis was evaluated, there was no significant difference in cytologies with CIN between the first and the second phases of the menstrual cycle. CONCLUSION: Frequency of the cytolytic flora and Candida albicans is influenced by the phase of the menstrual …

[Prevalence of bacterial vaginitis and vaginosis: association with clinical and laboratory features, and treatment].

This was a cross-sectional study meant to determine the prevalence of vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis among open population females from Cuernavaca City. The relationship between clinical manifestations, laboratory diagnosis and response to therapy were evaluated as well. A group of 405 sexually active women were enrolled between January and July, 1994. The patients were attending the City Hospital for a regular gynecological consultation, upon their informed consent, they answered a specifically designed questionnaire and had a vaginal secretion sampling. Cotton swabs containing such secret…

The effect of treatment regimens for vaginitis and cervicitis on vaginal colonization by lactobacilli.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to determine the effect of various treatment regimens on vaginal colonization by H2O2-positive and H2O2-negative lactobacilli. STUDY DESIGN: The subset of women enrolled in a large longitudinal cohort study who had Chlamydia trachomatis (n = 13), bacterial vaginosis (n = 105), yeast vaginitis (n = 15), or mucopurulent cervicitis (n = 47) were compared with 93 women without genital infection from the same population. The effect of various treatment regimens on lactobacilli was evaluated. RESULTS: Use of doxycycline, azithromycin, clotrimaz…
