OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess predictors of adverse 1-week outcomes and determine the effect of left atrial appendage (LAA) morphology following LAA closure (LAAC) with Amplatzer devices.
BACKGROUND: Percutaneous LAAC is a valuable treatment option for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. Determinants of procedural safety events with Amplatzer occluders are not well established, and the possibly interrelating effect of LAA anatomy is unknown.
METHODS: Between 2009 and 2014, 500 consecutive patients with atrial fibrillation ineligible or at high risk for o

Test occlusion with a balloon is done to predict operability of large hypertensive patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). If the fall in the pulmonary artery pressures is inadequate, a complete closure is not desired. To create a predictable premeasured fenestration in a nitinol occluder device used for closing hypertensive PDA. A large nitinol occluder device was punctured with an 18G needle to advance a 0.035˝ stiff guide wire through the occluder before loading it into the delivery system. The occluder with the guidewire was then deployed across the PDA. A coronary guide catheter was later threade

PURPOSE: Suture-mediated hemostasis device takes a long time to train and have limitations in finding appropriate compression point depending on the tactile sense of the hands. If the appropriate compression point is determined using ultrasound and the instrument is used under ultrasound guidance, it is expected to reduce the technical failure and additional manual compression.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 104 patients in whom the ProGlide vascular closure device (Abbott Vascular, Redwood City, CA, USA) was deployed to close common femoral artery access between Jan

As part of a cardiological follow-up 3 months after transcatheter aortic valve repair (TAVR), an 83-year-old women reported that the attempt to resume postoperative Nordic walking failed due to new unilateral intermittent claudication. Duplex sonography revealed a filiform stenosis at the origin of the superficial femoral artery (SFA), caused by malposition of a plug-based vascular closure device (VCD), hemodynamically consistent with Rutherford I/1. The patient's wishes and high level of suffering justified surgical revascularization. Intraoperatively, subtotal occlusion of the SFA was confir

The exclusion of abdominal aortic aneurysms by endovascular techniques has enabled the treatment of patients who have high-risk comorbidities that preclude safe surgical repair. Since the development of the unibody bifurcated endovascular stent-graft for abdominal aortic aneurysm exclusion, remarkable technological improvements have facilitated stent-graft delivery and reduced the required size of the access site. Our initial institutional experience with the use of the Endologix IntuiTrak Express Delivery System for the Powerlink stent-graft (in 7 patients) shows that the device is suited for

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion device positioning upon periprocedural and long-term outcomes.
BACKGROUND: The Amulet device is designed to cover the ostium of the LAA. Prolapse of the device into the neck of the LAA is not uncommon resulting in incomplete coverage of the ostium. The clinical consequences of this remain uncertain.
METHODS: Outcomes of 87 patients with successful LAA closure were analyzed according to Amulet disc position: group A (n = 45) had complete LAA ostium coverage; group B (n = 42) had incomplete ostium coverage because of

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Soft tissue loss from infectious, vascular, and traumatic disorders often results in poor healing, painful wound care, and the need for repeated operations. This retrospective study evaluates a single-institutional experience with negative pressure therapy (NPT), using the vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) device in a group of children with diverse soft tissue problems.
METHODS: The medical records of 51 patients treated with NPT from January 2000 to July 2003 were reviewed for demographics, diagnosis, duration of VAC therapy, wound closure, recurrent disease, and complication

BACKGROUND: Previous research found at least one vascular closure device (VCD) to be associated with excess vascular complications, compared to manual compression (MC) controls, following cardiac catheterization. Since that time, several more VCDs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This research evaluates the safety profiles of current frequently used VCDs and other hemostasis strategies.
METHODS: Of 1089 sites that submitted data to the CathPCI Registry from 2005 through the second quarter of 2009, a total of 1,819,611 percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) proce

OBJECTIVE: Despite the recent trend of access miniaturization in minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) surgical "cut down (CD)" for femoral cannulation remains the standard at many centers. Percutaneous vascular closure (PVC) devices have recently been introduced for minimizing invasiveness during interventional diagnostic and therapy. This report summarizes the initial experience with this new approach in the setting of MICS, with a special focus on safety and advantages.
METHODS: Percutaneous cannulation with a standard protocol including preoperative computer tomography imaging and int

A 5-month-old (5.7 kg) infant with trisomy 21 suffered an external iliac artery (EIA) rupture following femoral arterial access for attempted percutaneous retrograde ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure. An endovascular occlusion approach was employed as an alternative to high-risk open vascular surgery. The infant experienced a cardiac arrest during anaesthetic induction, with angiography revealing active EIA bleeding. The vessel was successfully occluded with an Amplatzer Piccolo device, with distal perfusion likely preserved with collateralisation via the internal iliac artery. Recovery

We report a case of a 50-year-old man with a 10-year history of pedicle screw internal fixation in the thoracic spine and heroin abuse, who presented with sudden-onset massive hemoptysis with hemorrhagic shock and asphyxia. Urgent contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) characteristically showed thoracic aortic perforation, a paravertebral pseudoaneurysm, and an intrapulmonary hematoma. Emergency percutaneous thoracic endovascular aortic repair (pTEVAR) with the preclose technique using a vascular closure device under local anesthesia achieved success without any complications. Iatrogenic femoral artery pseudoaneurysm (IFAP) is a common complication following endovascular procedures. Treatment options include manual compression, ultrasound-guided compression, thrombin injection, and surgical repair, each with its own limitations. Recent case reports have described successful IFAP treatment using the Perclose ProGlide/ProStyle (Abbott Vascular, Lake Bluff, USA) suture-mediated closure device by directly puncturing the pseudoaneurysm sac and advancing a guidewire into the native artery. Herein, we present a novel through-and-through wire technique using the same device

Angio-SealTM is a vascular closure device (VCD) that can be applied to the femoral artery following cardiac catheterization to achieve hemostasis. Although it has been demonstrated to be superior to conventional manual pressure and to reduce time to hemostasis and patient ambulation, the use of this VCD is not without its complications. In this report, we describe the case of a 55-year-old man who died due to an extremely rare event that occurred several hours after the deployment of an Angio-SealTM VCD: acute complete transverse laceration of the femoral artery that occurred because of the pa

This report presents the successful repair of an iatrogenic brachial artery pseudoaneurysm in a 72-year-old man who had peripheral artery disease and received endovascular treatment. A novel interventional method for treating iatrogenic femoral pseudoaneurysms with Perclose Proglide (Abbott Vascular Devices, Redwood City, CA, USA) has been reported; however, since a direct sheath insertion into the lumen of the pseudoaneurysm is initially required at the first step of this procedure, this strategy may prove limited in cases with small pseudoaneurysms. We describe the complete hemostasis of the
