Cutaneous vasculitis is frequently located on the lower limbs. We describe a patient who developed palpable purpura affecting the penis as the presenting sign of more widespread lesions of Henoch-Schönlein purpura.

Dermatomyositis of childhood onset is characterized by vasculitic lesions and often complicated by calcinosis. We describe 32 patients with juvenile dermatomyositis. All suffered from vasculitic skin changes like facial erythema often with edema, Gottron's sign, telangiectasias, erythematous eruptions, different rashes and necrotic ulcerations. Vasculitis appeared also in inner organs as gastrointestinal ulceration, neurologic and cardiac manifestation. 4 children complained of Raynaud's phenomenon. Calcinosis of soft tissues developed in 21 patients within 0.5 to 10 years after onset. In 6 of…

Lately new aspects of diseases have been described in long known forms of pulmonary vasculitis and granulomatosis like Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), sarcoidosis (SA), exogenous allergic alveolitis and the Churg-Strauss syndrome. In WG it is clinically important to distinguish between two different phases of disease - the early initial phase with localized inflammation and granuloma formation and the later generalized form of disease where an involvement of virtually every organ system can occur. Recently autoantibodies (antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies) have been discovered which are hig…

A 44-year-old woman presenting first ear disease and then cranial nerve, lung and kidney lesions and ultimately central nervous system involvement was found on kidney biopsy to have Wegener granulomatosis (WG). It is unlikely that the vasculitic component of the illness was directly responsible for most of the neurological symptoms.

Wegener's granulomatosis is characterized by a necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis of the upper and lower respiratory tract together with glomerulonephritis. Presentation is usually with symptoms referrable to the upper respiratory tract, the glomerulonephritis manifesting itself weeks or months later. A case is reported of a man presenting with a necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis of his penis who subsequently developed glomerulonephritis 18 months later.

A case is described of a 44-years-old woman who developed cutaneous vasculitis, nephritis and paralytic ileus after three years' treatment with naproxen. All these features were thought to be attributable to a naproxen induced vasculitis and all resolved spontaneously after the drug was stopped.

A drug abuse patient with acute intracerebral hemorrhage is presented. Brain tissue obtained at surgery corroborated angiographic evidence of cerebral vasculitis. The possible relationship between drug usage and the occurrence of intracerebral bleeding and/or cerebral vasculitis in such patients is discussed.

Systemic vasculitides are rare, multi-organ inflammatory disorders involving blood vessels, classified by the size of the affected vessels. When abdominal arteries are involved, diagnosis becomes particularly challenging due to nonspecific symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and abdominal pain, which can mimic other acute conditions and hinder identification in emergency settings. Examples include Takayasu arteritis (large vessels), polyarteritis nodosa (medium vessels), and lupus-associated or drug-induced vasculitis (small vessels), each exhibiting distinct imaging features. Imaging techniques,…

Rheumatoid vasculitis (RV) is one of the most serious extra-articular complications of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), generally treated with a high dose of immunosuppressive drugs. Recently, we encountered two cases of ulcerative vasculitis in methotrexate (MTX)-prescribed RA patients, which simulated RV; however, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded RNA in situ hybridization on their skin biopsies revealed many EBV-positive lymphocytes (over 50 cells/high-power field) within the vessel walls and perivascular stroma, which led us to the diagnosis of EBV-related vasculitis instead of RV. Subsequently, …

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of new therapeutic modalities with the observation period of three years on patients with isolated ocular vasculitis in comparison with ocular vasculitis as a systemic disease.
METHODS: The effectiveness of the therapy was assessed based on the changes in visual acuity and degree of ocular inflammation (mild, medium, moderate, severe) with the following parameters: vitreous body cloudiness, blood vessels layering, macula oedema, blood vessels occlusion and new vascularisation
RESULTS: New therapeutic modalities resulted in reduction in the number of patients wit…

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) was first described by French Dermatologist Louis-Anne-Jean Brocq as a "rapidly spreading ulceration of soft tissue".1 Histologically, PG is a neutrophilic dermatosis presenting as painful ulcerations. It is known to be associated with autoimmune-mediated disorders such as vasculitis.2 Timely confirmatory diagnosis with tissue biopsy and management with immunosuppressive agents are critical.1 We report a unique case of a PG-like lesion related to small vessel vasculitis in a 47-year-old man. Following the initiation of methotrexate (Methotrexate) therapy, the patient'…

INTRODUCTION: Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a rare disease characterized by the inflammation and destruction of small blood vessels and circulating ANCAs. Drugs such as antithyroid drugs (ATDs), especially propylthiouracil (PTU), have been used for the production of ANCAs and cause the development of drug-induced AAV. The pathogenesis of this disease is unclear but could be related to the physiological processes affecting the degradation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). At present, PTU is widely used in patients with Graves' disease (GD) who…

BACKGROUND: Interleukin (IL)-16 is a T cell chemoattractant produced by peripheral mononuclear cells. We investigated whether IL-16 plays a pro- or an anti-inflammatory role in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV). Furthermore, we investigated whether the level of IL-16 could predict the activity and extent of organ damage in AAV based on AAV-specific indices.
METHODS: Seventy-eight patients with AAV from a prospective observational cohort were included in this analysis. Blood sampling and clinical assessments, including the Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVA…

We investigated the development rate and time, risk factors, predictors, and aetiologies of hospitalised infection in Korean patients with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 154 patients with AAV. Hospitalised infection was considered only when patients were admitted for serious infection related to AAV or AAV treatment. The gap-time was defined as the period from diagnosis to the first hospitalised infection or to the last visit for uninfected patients. We calculated Birmingham vasculitis activity score (…
