Change detection is impaired in children with dyslexia.

The severe deficits in rapid automatized naming demonstrated by children with developmental dyslexia has usually been interpreted in terms of a deficit in speed of access to the lexicon rather than as a possible deficit in speed of visual object recognition. Yet fluent reading requires rapid visual recognition and semantic interpretation of new letters and words appearing in successive fixations of the eyes. Thus we wondered whether change detection performance was related to reading ability. We investigated whether children with developmental dyslexia (DD) were less able to detect change in a

[Concentrating on weaknesses or compensating by strengths? Comparison of 2 strategies for remediation of children with comprehensive reading-spelling disorder].

Our study compares the efficiency and acceptance of two different methods of treating dyslexia in children. The first method addresses the most commonly encountered deficits in sequential processing. It relies primarly upon the "Kieler Lese-Rechtschreibaufbau". The second proceeds from the child's relative resources with regard to simultaneous processing as described by Kaufman. Training materials are those prescribed by Kaufman. Normally gifted primary school third-graders were trained in two groups (n = 13 and n = 12) and achieved a mean SIF score of SW = 101 on the K-ABC. As expected, the c

Narrative development in late talkers: early school age.

Children with slow expressive language development (SELD) as toddlers and a control group of children with normal language development (NL) were followed to early school age. Children with SELD were, at that point, subdivided into two groups: those who had moved within the normal range of expressive language (the History of Expressive Language Delay [HELD] subgroup); and those who continued to score below the normal range in expressive language at school age (the Expressive Language Delay [ELD] subgroup). During their kindergarten, first, and second grade years, they were administered a narrat

A reading-level design study of phonological skills underlying fourth-grade children's word reading difficulties.

A 3-group reading-level design was used to investigate phonological analysis, verbal working memory, and pseudoword reading performance in less skilled fourth-grade readers. Children were given phonological oddity tasks assessing their sensitivity to subsyllabic and phonemic units, together with standardized tests of verbal working memory and pseudoword reading. Less skilled fourth-grade readers performed lower than both chronological age and reading-level controls on the phonological oddity and pseudoword reading tests. Less skilled fourth-grade readers performed at the same level as skilled

The role of sensorimotor experience in object recognition. A case of multimodal agnosia.

Object recognition was studied in a 19-yr-old male patient who presented severe multimodal amnesia and agnosia without significant intellectual, linguistic or perceptual deficits. Bilateral temporal lobe lesions involved medial, polar and anterior infero-temporal structures. Although visual recognition was impaired to various extents for all categories of objects, preservation of certain capacities were demonstrated. In particular, the patient was able to determine specifically how to manipulate certain objects, in spite of his incapacity to define their function or their context of utilizatio

Dyslexia and classic pathognomic signs.

The classic pathognomic signs of dyslexia, such as reversals and rotations, appear to be associated with poor reading, not diagnosed developmental dyslexia. 26 8th and 9th grade dyslexia with poor perceptual/attentional ability were matched with 19 reading-retarded subjects with age-equivalent perceptual/attentional test scores for age, IQ, and degree of reading retardation and compared both with each other and with 96 adequate readers for reversals, rotations, insertions, substitutions, omissions, poor handwriting and visual ability on the Gray test, the WRAT Spelling Test, a writing task, an

Longer-term verbal and visual memory patterns in patients with temporal lobe and genetic generalized epilepsies.

OBJECTIVE: To compare forgetting patterns between patients with temporal lobe (TLE) and generalized (GGE) epilepsies and to assess whether recall is associated with epileptic activity. METHODS: Thirty-three patients with TLE (13 left, 17 right, and 3 nonlateralized TLE), 42 patients with GGE, and 57 healthy controls (HCs) were asked to recall words, verbal story material, and the Rey-Osterrieth complex figure at two delays. Accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) was defined by group performance comparable to HCs at 30 min and worse recall than HCs after 4 weeks. ALF was assessed by comparing

Impact of TCF4 on the genetics of schizophrenia.

Mutations of the transcription factor 4 (TCF4) gene cause mental retardation with or without associated facial dysmorphisms and intermittent hyperventilation. Subsequently, a polymorphism of TCF4 was shown in a genome-wide association study to slightly increase the risk of schizophrenia. We have further analysed the impact of this TCF4 variant rs9960767 on early information processing and cognitive functions in schizophrenia patients. We have shown in a sample of 401 schizophrenia patients that TCF4 influences verbal memory in the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test. Contrary to expectations, ca…

Number words recruit numerosity-related cortex in 3- to 5-year-old children.

Learning to map number words onto their ordinal and quantitative meanings is critical in the acquisition of formal mathematics. Previous neuroimaging work in adults suggests that the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) represents verbal, symbolic number (i.e., number words) as well as non-verbal, non-symbolic numerosity (i.e., number of items in an array), but it is unclear when this overlap emerges in development. If regions that represent number words rely on representations of numerosity, then there should be functional overlap between number word and numerosity representations in the brain, even in

Executive functioning in children with developmental dyslexia.

The term "executive function" has been used to describe several higher-order cognitive processes. This study examined the processing speed, shifting, planning, and verbal fluency of a sample of 50 Portuguese children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and 50 typically developing children (TDC; chronological-age-matched controls) between 8 and 12 years of age to evaluate the children's executive functioning. Compared to TDC, children with DD revealed significant processing speed, shifting, and verbal fluency deficits. After controlling for differences in the general intellectual ability, signific

Neuropsychological profiles of adults with Klinefelter syndrome.

Children and adolescents with Klinefelter syndrome (XXY) have been reported to show deficits in language processing including VIQ < PIQ and a learning disability in reading and spelling. However, whether this is characteristic of adults with Klinefelter syndrome has not been established. Thirty-five men with Klinefelter syndrome, aged 16 to 61, and 22 controls were evaluated with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. The Klinefelter patients scored significantly below controls in language skills, verbal processing speed, verbal and nonverbal executive abilities, and motor dexterity. With

Memory functioning during the first year after closed head injury in children and adolescents.

Effects of the severity of closed head injury (CHI) on verbal learning and memory and visual recognition memory were studied at base line and on a 1-year follow-up examination in 58 pediatric admissions sampled from three age ranges, 6-8, 9-12, and 13-15 years. Within each age range, recovery of memory was compared in patients with mild to moderate CHI and survivors of severe injury. Consistent with previous findings obtained in head-injured children sampled from a wide age range, the present study confirms that memory deficit persists at least 1 year after severe CHI. Impairment of visual rec…

Neonatal brain abnormalities and memory and learning outcomes at 7 years in children born very preterm.

Using prospective longitudinal data from 198 very preterm and 70 full term children, this study characterised the memory and learning abilities of very preterm children at 7 years of age in both verbal and visual domains. The relationship between the extent of brain abnormalities on neonatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and memory and learning outcomes at 7 years of age in very preterm children was also investigated. Neonatal MRI scans were qualitatively assessed for global, white-matter, cortical grey-matter, deep grey-matter, and cerebellar abnormalities. Very preterm children performed

Distinct serial position profiles and neuropsychological measures differentiate late life depression from normal aging and Alzheimer's disease.

Geriatric depression is associated with cognitive deficits that share similar features with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and normal aging. This study examined cognitive profiles and serial position effects in patients with geriatric depression (N=20) or AD (N=32) and in elderly controls (N=18). Groups were compared on two measures of serial position of the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT), scaled scores and regional scores. Newly devised regional scores measure the percentage of items recalled as a function of the possible number of items presented from three regions of the list. Regional sc…
