Robust vestibular self-motion signals in macaque posterior cingulate region.

Self-motion signals, distributed ubiquitously across parietal-temporal lobes, propagate to limbic hippocampal system for vector-based navigation via hubs including posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and retrosplenial cortex (RSC). Although numerous studies have indicated posterior cingulate areas are involved in spatial tasks, it is unclear how their neurons represent self-motion signals. Providing translation and rotation stimuli to macaques on a 6-degree-of-freedom motion platform, we discovered robust vestibular responses in PCC. A combined three-dimensional spatiotemporal model captured data

Ultrastructural alterations of the vestibular nuclei in Jacob-Creutzfeld disease.

The morphological alterations of the vestibular nuclei in a case of Jacob-Creutzfeld disease were studied with light and electron microscope. The most prominent histological findings were the neuronal degeneration and neuronal loss resulting in a marked decrease of the total population, the increased reactive astrocytosis which demonstrated an extensive perivascular arrangement, the microgliosis and the interstitial spongiosis. At the ultrastructural level a marked dilatation of the astrocytic processes was seen. Most of them were completely transformed to sizeable cysts which were divided by

[Investigation of the anti-motion sickness effect of 3-hydroxypyridine derivatives].

Experiments with rats showed that three out of 12 3-hydroxypyridine derivatives (ethyl-methyl hyd- roxypyrine succinate, SK-132 and IBCP-2 - had an anti-motion sickness effect stronger than of scopolamine, the reference vestiboloprotector. The anti-motion sickness effect of ethyl-methyl hydroxypyrine was also demonstrated in experiments with cats. Apparent anti-motion sickness effect of ethyl-methyl hydroxypyrine (mexydol) was found in 69% of healthy male volunteers which is comparable with the effect of scopolamine (62%). In experiments with immobilized cats (myorelaxation drugs) the microele

Evaluating the Effects of Levodopa on the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex in Parkinson's Disease: A Case Series.

PURPOSE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting individuals over 60 years old. The disorder is characterized by motor symptoms due in large part to the loss of dopamine-producing neurons. The vestibular system, crucial for maintaining balance, may be impacted in PD, contributing to balance issues through dysfunction in the vestibulo-ocular reflex. In this study, we aim to describe differences in vestibular responses before and after use of levodopa (L-DOPA) in patients with PD. METHOD: The study evaluated nine PD patients who underwent videonystagmography

Gliogenesis but not neurogenesis occurs during the acute phase of vestibular compensation after unilateral vestibular neurectomy.

Following unilateral loss of vestibular input, recovery of motor symptoms is achieved within 2 weeks in rodents. Given that neurogenesis was only reported at 1 month post-lesion, whether there is neurogenesis in this early phase of vestibular compensation remains to be investigated. If not, what then is the major cell type that participates in this timeframe? We show abundant nestin-positive cells in the ipsilesional but not contralesional vestibular nucleus (VN) of rats after ablating cell bodies of vestibular nerve at the Scarpa's ganglion, as confirmed by both magnetic resonance imaging aft

An ipsilateral vestibulothalamic tract adjacent to the medial lemniscus in humans.

We examined 14 patients with acute anteromedial pontomesencephalic infarctions for signs of vestibular and ocular motor dysfunction. In all cases, an isolated ipsilateral deviation of the subjective visual vertical (mean: 4.1, range: 2.7- 6.6) was found without any further signs of vestibular or eye movement disorders like ocular torsion or skew deviation. Distinct lesions in thin-slice brainstem MRI showed an overlap zone in the medial portion of the medial lemniscus. The finding of putative ipsilateral vestibular projections running adjacent to or within the medial lemniscus was subsequently

A novel black-hooded mutant rat (ci3) with spontaneous circling behavior but normal auditory and vestibular functions.

Abnormal circling behavior in rodents is usually attributed to vestibular dysfunction. In rats, all circling mutants described previously have inner ear defects resulting in auditory and vestibular dysfunctions. Here, we describe a new mutant rat with abnormal spontaneous circling behavior but normal auditory and vestibular functions. The new circling mutant rat was discovered in progeny of an apparently normal black-hooded (BH) rat inbred line [BH.7A(LEW)/Won] and was termed ci3, because we recently found two other mutant circling rats (ci1 and ci2) in a Lewis (LEW) inbred rat strain. The ci3

Effect of M-current modulation on mammalian vestibular responses to transient head motion.

The precise role and mechanisms underlying efferent modulation of peripheral vestibular afferent function are not well understood in mammals. Clarifying the details of efferent action may lead to new strategies for clinical management of debilitating disturbances in vestibular and balance function. Recent evidence in turtle indicates that efferent modulation of M-currents is likely one mechanism for modifying afferent discharge. M-currents depend in part on KCNQ potassium conductances (Kv7), which can be adjusted through efferent activation of M1, M3, and/or M5 muscarinic acetylcholine recepto

Neuronal adaptation accompanying metamorphosis in the flatfish.

Flatfish provide a natural paradigm to investigate adaptive changes in the central nervous system of vertebrates. During their metamorphosis, the animals undergo a 90 degrees tilt to one side or the other to become the bottom-adapted adult flatfish. The eye on the down side is pushed over to the up side. Thus, vestibular and oculomotor coordinate systems rotate 90 degrees relative to each other. As a result, during swimming movements different types of compensatory eye movements are produced before and after metamorphosis by the same vestibular stimulation. Intracellular staining of central ne

Clinical application of vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP).

The author reviewed clinical aspects of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs). Now two types of VEMPs are available. The first one is cervical VEMP, which is recorded in the sternocleidomastoid muscle and predominantly reflects sacculo-collic reflex. The other is ocular VEMP, which is usually recorded below the lower eye lid and predominantly reflects utriculo-ocular reflex. VEMPs play important roles not only for assessment of common vestibular diseases but also for establishment of new clinical entities. Clinical application in Meniere's disease, vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysma

The history and future of neuro-otology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The field of neuro-otology has advanced substantially over the past 150 years. The function of the vestibular system was presumed to be audiologic prior to the groundbreaking work of Prosper Ménière in the late 1800s. Since that time, scientific discovery has advanced our knowledge of the physiology and the pathophysiology of the vestibular system. This article describes where we have been, where we are now, and where we need to go from here. RECENT FINDINGS: Some of the important recent advances include: (1) improved imaging of the brain and inner ear, (2) development of n

Corticofugal connections between the cerebral cortex and brainstem vestibular nuclei in the macaque monkey.

The distribution of cortical efferent connections to brainstem vestibular nuclei was quantitatively analysed by means of retrograde tracer substances injected into different electrophysiologically identified parts of the brainstem vestibular nuclear complex of five Java monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Three polysensory vestibular areas were found to have a substantial projection to the vestibular nuclei: area 2v located at the tip of the intraparietal sulcus, the parietoinsular vestibular cortex (PIVC) covering the most occipital part of the granular insula (Ig) and the retroinsular area (Ri or

Immunohistochemical demonstration of a thiamine diphosphate-binding protein in the brain of the adult rat.

We recently purified a new thiamine diphosphate-binding protein (ThDP-BP) prepared from rat liver, and found immunoreactivity for ThDP-BP in neurons and other neuronal tissues. In this study, we examined the distribution of ThDP-BP in the rat neurons by the avidin-biotin complex technique. Strong immunoreactivity for ThDP-BP was found in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, ependymal cells, nucleus III, nucleus V, and medial vestibular nucleus. Moderate immunoreactivity was noted in the olfactorius nucleus anterior and weak activity in the nucleus ruber. ThDP-BP may be useful in clarifying the pa

Utricular function in vestibular neuritis: a pilot study of concordance/discordance between ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and ocular cycloposition.

Vestibular neuritis (VN) can affect utricular afferents. Utricular function can be assessed by ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) whose abnormalities include weak or absent responses, and ocular cycloposition whose abnormalities include ocular torsion (OT). When studied independently in vestibular neuritis, oVEMPs are abnormal in 61-82% of cases, and OT is present in 72-80% of cases. The similar range of abnormalities suggests the hypothesis that these tests should be concordantly abnormal. We tested this hypothesis by identifying consecutive adult cases of VN in whom both o
