[Driving behavior of patients before cataract operation--is an unlimited driver's license justifiable? Results of an analysis of 1,124 patients of the ophthalmology department of a central hospital].

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to evaluate the driving habits and patterns of those patients, who underwent cataract-surgery during a one year period at the Landesaugenklinik Salzburg and to compare the preoperative visual acuity with the legal requirements in effect in Austria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The best-corrected visual acuity prior to surgery and the individual driving customs were noted on a detailed questionnaire. RESULTS: A minimum of 5.6% of the overall number of patients with cataract (not taking visual field defects into account) were driving a motor vehicle with a visual

Do tinted lenses improve the reading performance of dyslexic children? A cohort study.

The use of tinted lenses as a method to improve reading skills in children with dyslexia has been a controversial issue in recent years. The purpose of the present study was to determine if tinted lenses cause a measurable improvement in the reading performance of dyslexic children. Twenty-four children aged 8 to 12 years participated in the study. Dyslexia was diagnosed in all children by psychological evaluation, and these children underwent an ophthalmic evaluation for inclusion into the study. Participants were graded for speed and accuracy as they read through spectacle frames that contai

Protective and risk factors of mental health of working age adults with adventitious total bilateral blindness and low vision: A scoping review protocol.

Vision loss has been associated with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, which significantly impact lives of working age adults with adventitious total bilateral blindness and low vision. It is imperative, therefore, to prioritize the mental health in this population by exploring and understanding the factors that impact on their mental health. Hence, the objective of this scoping review is to identify and chart existing literature on the protective and risk factors of mental health of working age adults with adventitious total bilateral blin

Conditional pathways to loneliness in older adults with vision impairment: a decision-tree analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of vision impairment continues to increase globally due to population growth and aging. Among older adults with vision impairment, loneliness is common. Prior studies assessing loneliness risk have relied on regression-based approaches, which may not capture complex, heterogeneous conditional pathways. We apply a theoretically guided machine learning approach to examine loneliness risk among older adults with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using baseline data from 210 adults with AMD (Agemean = 80.1 years) enrolle

Prevalence of Vision-Threatening Ocular Disease Among North Carolina Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence studies on ocular diseases among veterans are limited and underreported. In this retrospective study, we examined the prevalence of vision-threatening ocular diseases among North Carolina veterans. We assessed the prevalence of 6 serious ocular conditions among veterans receiving primary care at the Salisbury Veterans Affairs Health Care System (SVAHCS) in North Carolina to better understand ocular disease prevalence among veterans. Glaucoma, the most common ocular disease in this population, underscores the need for targeted interventions to mitigate vision loss. MAT

The Night Vision Threshold Test (NVTT): a simple instrument for testing dark adaptation in young children.

It is estimated that 41 per cent of the population aged under 5 in the developing world has an inadequate vitamin A dietary intake resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. Half a million children go blind each year as a result of vitamin A deficiency. Thirteen and a half million have night blindness, the first sign of vitamin A deficiency. Unfortunately, there is no simple, sensitive and inexpensive means to identify the child who has marginal levels of vitamin A and thus institute means to prevent their development of severe deficiency. A low cost, simple, easy-to-use instrument design
