Language profiles in Noonan Syndrome - A multiple case study.

Noonan Syndrome (NS) is a genetic disorder associated with a diverse range of symptoms. This study aims to provide a comprehensive description of the linguistic profiles of children and adolescents with NS, focusing on vocabulary, grammar skills, phonological memory skills, working memory skills, and visuospatial skills. Sixteen participants aged 6-16 took part in the study. The findings reveal substantial variation in the affected linguistic areas, with some participants demonstrated normal findings, while inconsistent and overall weak language skills were observed in a large subgroup of part…

Sexual attitudes and knowledge of high-functioning adolescents and adults with autism.

Interviewed 21 high-functioning adults with autism and 20 mildly to moderately mentally retarded adults without autism about sexuality and dating. Sexual knowledge and interest were assessed by a sexuality vocabulary checklist and a multiple-choice questionnaire. Group differences were found in experience, with more sexual experiences among the mentally retarded adults, but not in knowledge or interest. In both groups IQ was positively correlated with knowledge scores and males had significantly greater interest in sexuality than females. Implications of sex and group differences are discussed…

Mixing Labour and Mixed Property: The Law of Locke's Original Appropriation.

Locke's famous account of labor-mixing in acquiring property is often treated as a metaphor: labor cannot be literally mixed with objects. This article situates Locke's vocabulary and argument of "mixing," "joining," and "annexing" in a long legal tradition of writing about mixed, joined, and fused substances in property acquisition. It suggests that Locke's account can be textually and contextually interpreted as an example of accession and specification-civil and common legal modes of original acquisition through mixing properties-and that this account solves many of the famous criticisms of…

Development and content validation of a mobile application for monitoring latent tuberculosis treatment.

BACKGROUND: Non-compliance with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) treatment is a reality. The objective of this study was to develop and validate an mobile device application for monitoring the treatment of LTBI. METHODS: We defined the requirements, elaborated on the application's conceptual map, generated implementation and prototyping alternatives, and validated content. RESULTS: Feedback on the validity of content were: "usefulness, consistency, clarity, objectivity, vocabulary, and precision" from professionals, and "clarity" from patients. CONCLUSIONS: The application proved to be …

[Job safety: where there is high tension at the work place: MOBBING].

In this article appears the particular phenomenon called MOBBING which begins to came out even in our job places, after years long researches and foreign studies. This syndrome, besides stress and burn-out, it's one of the working risk factors of organizational-psychological kind. The word Mobbing comes from the ethological vocabulary and it means the attack of some part of a crowd against the most weak member. It can be interesting to sketch some not-minority problems that are connected with job healthiness doing confusion as it would only be individuals problems.

Symbolic keyboard for computer aided instruction of deaf children.

We describe a computer-based method for the special education of deaf children in their stage of expanding an initial vocabulary; the method uses a symbolic keyboard to facilitate real-time communication between the deaf child and the machine. The lack of auditory feedback is partially compensated by using visual and proprioceptive sensorial modalities as alternative representations of words and concepts. To illustrate the use of the computer with display and symbolic keyboard we comment on a program for the teaching of spatial relationships. The same method is used in teaching the structure o…

Dementia in Parkinson disease: a neuropsychological analysis.

An extensive set of neuropsychological measures was administered to 60 Parkinson's disease patients and age-, sex-, and education-matched controls in order to investigate the nature and prevalence of the cognitive deficit in the disease. Parkinsonian patients performed significantly poorer on all measures with the exception of tests for apraxia and object recognition, and on a test of vocabulary knowledge. Discriminant analysis of the test data revealed that over 93% of patients are impaired relative to matched controls, but that assigning a prevalence rate for dementia in the disease may be d…

Family factors as moderators of the association between specific cognitive domains and psychosocial, academic, and adaptive functioning outcomes in youth with spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the direct and interactive effects of cognitive and family factors on psychosocial, academic, and adaptive functioning outcomes in youth with spina bifida (SB). METHODS: Participants included 41 families of youth with SB (ages 3-16 years old). Caregivers reported on child functioning (i.e., executive, psychosocial, and adaptive functioning), as well as family factors, such as family environment, marital adjustment, caregiver distress, and parenting stress. Youth completed performance-based assessments of vocabulary and academic functioning. Dire…

Language impairments in seropositive and seronegative autoimmune encephalitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a rare neuroinflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system. To examine language functions in patients with different subsets of AE consisting of seropositive and seronegative groups. METHODS: Fifty-two patients were recruited from neurology departments in Melbourne, Australia, who met clinical criteria for possible AE. Language tests include the Naming Test from the Sydney Language Battery (SydBat), the semantic fluency trial from the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT), and the Vocabulary and Similarities subtests…

The influence of temperament and perinatal factors on language development: a longitudinal study.

Early language development is characterized by large individual variation. Several factors were proposed to contribute to individual pathway … dhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ). Early nonverbal communication skills, receptive and expressive vocabulary were evaluated with the Hungarian version of The MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory (HCDI). Our study adds further evidence to the contribution of infant temperament to early language development. Temperament, infant gender, and gestation …

BACKGROUND: There is accumulating evidence for a link between maternal stress during pregnancy and later behavioural and emotional problems … =0;2, range: 9;5-11;11). OUTCOME MEASURES: Language ability was measured using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R). The main predictor variable was the frequency of 10 typically 'stressful' life events experienced by mothers during early and/or late pregnancy. Children were allocated to four groups according to whether they were exposed to …

Definitions and criteria for diabetes-related foot disease (IWGDF 2023 update).

Multiple disciplines are involved in the management of diabetes-related foot disease and a common vocabulary is essential for clear communication. Based on the systematic reviews of the literature that form the basis of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) Guidelines, the IWGDF has developed a set of definitions and criteria for diabetes-related foot disease. This document describes the 2023 update of these definitions and criteria. We suggest these definitions be used consistently in both clinical practice and research, to facilitate clear communication with people wit…

Dermatology and the human gene map.

Chromosomal localization has been established for many genetic traits. Gene mapping may lead to the identification of disease genes, an understanding of pathogenesis, and the development of rational therapy, as well as facilitating antenatal diagnosis and genetic counselling. 'The new genetics' is therefore of great interest to the clinician. Unfortunately the complex technology and unfamiliar vocabulary of molecular biology often deter non-specialists from keeping abreast of these developments. This account explains the principles of gene mapping, discusses its relevance to dermatologists, an…
