Use of an mHealth Intervention to Improve Engagement in HIV Community-Based Care Among Persons Recently Released from a Correctional Facility in Washington, DC: A Pilot Study.

We examined the preliminary effectiveness of a computerized counseling session plus post-incarceration text messaging intervention (CARE + Corrections) to support ART adherence and linkage/engagement in community care among recently incarcerated persons with HIV in Washington, D.C. Recently incarcerated persons with HIV ≥ 18 years old were recruited from the D.C. jail or community outreach and randomized to CARE + Corrections or control arm. Participants completed assessments at baseline, 3-months and 6-months. Multivariable random effects modeling identified predictors of suppressed viral loa…

Long-term quality of life measured by the University of Washington QoL questionnaire (version 4) in patients with oral cancer treated with or without reconstruction with a microvascular free flap.

We used the University of Washington Quality of Life (UW-QoL) questionnaire (version 4) to assess the long-term quality of life (QoL) of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma treated with or without reconstruction with a microvascular free flap, and all patients with T2-T4 oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) treated in this way were eligible for the study. A total of 139 patients' personal details, medical history, and QoL scores were collected and analysed. The mean (SD) overall QoL score was 73.09 (14.8) for patients with T2-T4 oral SCC. The mean (SD) global QoL scores of patients who ha…

Effects of androgen deprivation therapy and bisphosphonate treatment on bone in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer: results from the University of Washington Rapid Autopsy Series.

Qualitative and quantitative bone features were determined in nondecalcified and decalcified bone from 20 predetermined bone sites in each of 44 patients who died with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), some of which received bisphosphonate treatment (BP) in addition to androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT). Thirty-nine of the 44 patients (89%) had evidence of bone metastases. By histomorphometric analysis, these bone metastases were associated with a range of bone responses from osteoblastic to osteolytic with a wide spectrum of bone responses often seen within an individual patient. Associations between the neural-hematopoietic-inflammatory axis and DNA methylation of stress-related genes in human leukocytes: Data from the Washington, D.C. cardiovascular health and needs assessment.

Chronic stress is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and elevated amygdala activity. Previous research suggests a plausible c … ylation of stress-associated genes in a community-based cohort of African American individuals from Washington D.C. at risk for CVD. To assess the relationships between AmgyA, SpleenA, BMA, and DNA methylation, linear regression models were run and adjusted for body mass index and 10-year predicted atherosclerotic CVD risk. Among 60 participants (93.3% femal …

Perceptions of Sexual Risk, PrEP Services, and Peer Navigation Support among HIV-Negative Latinx and Black Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) Residing in Western Washington.

INTRODUCTION: HIV PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is underutilized among Latinx and Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. Although peer navigation approaches may increase PrEP uptake and adherence, it remains unclear what strategies work best for MSM of color. METHODS: From July 2017 to August 2018, we conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 25 purposively sampled Latinx and Black cisgender MSM to evaluate how the intersectionality of race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other identities influenced men's views on PrEP in general and on peer navigation speci

Poor population recovery of lake Washington Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in Pacific Northwestern USA may be associated with disease caused by Ceratonova shasta in an urban-influenced watershed.

Understanding the effects of anthropogenic changes on fish disease is vital for supporting mitigative actions for fisheries population recovery. The Lake Washington watershed in the Pacific Northwestern United States is influenced by high urban development and climate change, compromising the sustainability of anadromous salmon. We investigated Ceratonova shasta, a myxozoan parasite, in Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha to determine the impacts of C. shasta-induced enteronecrosis during salmon freshwater migrations within this watershed. All sampled adult Chinook Salmon returning to an e…

AIDS Drug Assistance Program disenrollment is associated with loss of viral suppression beyond differences in homelessness, mental health, and substance use disorders: An evaluation in Washington state 2017-2019.

AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs) are state-administered programs that pay for medical care for people living with HIV in the US. Maintaining enrollment in the programs is challenging, and a large proportion of clients in Washington state (WA) fail to recertify and are disenrolled. In this study we sought to quantify the impact of disenrollment from ADAPs on viral suppression. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of the 5238 clients in WA ADAP from 2017 to 2019 and estimated the risk difference (RD) of viral suppression before and after disenrollment. We performed a quantitative bias …

Identifying Geographic Areas of Washington, DC, With Increased Potential for Sexual HIV Transmission Among People With HIV With STIs and Concurrent Elevated HIV RNA: Data From the DC Cohort.

BACKGROUND: The Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) campaign advances the goal of ending the HIV epidemic by promoting durable viral suppression and therefore reducing sexual transmission. We used geospatial analysis to assess the potential for sexual HIV transmission by ZIP code of residence in the District of Columbia (DC) using data from the DC Cohort Longitudinal HIV Study (DC Cohort), a city-wide cohort of persons with HIV (PWH). METHODS: DC Cohort participants aged ≥13 years were included in the study period between April 1, 2016, and March 31, 2018. Potential for sexual HIV transmis

The natural history of Meckel's Diverticulum and its relation to incidental removal. A study of 202 cases of diseased Meckel's Diverticulum found in King County, Washington, over a fifteen year period.

To determine the natural history of Meckel's diverticulum, 202 case records of proved disease of Meckel's diverticulum were retrieved, covering a fifteen year period, from all the hospitals of King County, Washington (population, 1,143,800). Using the figure of 2 per cent incidence of Meckel's diverticulum, we calculated that a Meckel's diverticulum has a 4.2 per cent likelihood of causing disease during a lifetime, decreasing to zero with old age. Using previously published mortality and morbidity figures, we calculated that to save one patient's life from the complications of Meckel's divert…
