Electrodialysis ion-exchange membrane bioreactor (EDIMB) to remove nitrate from water: Optimization of operating conditions and kinetics analysis.

Nitrate pollution has become a worldwide problem. In this study, we remove nitrate from water by electrodialysis ion-exchange membrane bioreactor (EDIMB) and enabling simultaneous nitrate enrichment and denitrification. In this reactor, nitrate migrated from the water chamber to the biological chamber via electrodialysis and was degraded by microorganisms. The effects of voltage and biomass concentration on the reactor performance were examined, and the kinetics data of the water chamber and biological chamber were fitted. The experimental results showed that the migration of nitrate in the wa

Bioremediation of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) by Bioaugmentation and Biostimulation in Water with Floating Oil Spill Containment Booms as Bioreactor Basin.

A crude oil spill is a common issue during offshore oil drilling, transport and transfer to onshore. Second, the production of petroleum refinery effluent is known to cause pollution due to its toxic effluent discharge. Sea habitats and onshore soil biota are affected by total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as a pollutant in their natural environment. Crude oil pollution in seawater, estuaries and beaches requires an efficient process of cleaning. To remove crude oil pollutants from seawater, various physicochemical and biological treatment methods have been applied worldwide. A biological treat

Using Myriophyllum aquaticum (Vell.) Verdc. to remove heavy metals from contaminated water: Better dead or alive?

This study aimed to investigate the potential of the invasive macrophyte Myriophyllum aquaticum to remove heavy metals. The elements tested were Cd, Cr, Ni, and Zn, in single-metal trials, and experiments were performed with both the living and dead biomass of the plant. In respect of metal removal by living plants, the element that was removed the most was Zn, though Cd showed the highest concentration in plant shoots. The metal negative effect on plant growth was, therefore, more important than the level of metal concentration in plant tissue in determining the removal percentages. All the m

Nonideal transport of contaminants in heterogeneous porous media: 8. Characterizing and modeling asymptotic contaminant-elution tailing for several soils and aquifer sediments.

Miscible-displacement experiments were conducted to characterize long-term, low-concentration elution tailing associated with sorption/desorption processes. A variety of soils and aquifer sediments, representing a range of particle-size distributions and organic-carbon contents, were employed, and trichloroethene (TCE) was used as the model organic compound. Trichloroethene transport exhibited extensive elution tailing for all media, with several hundred to several thousand pore volumes of water flushing required to reach the detection limit. The elution tailing was more extensive for the medi

A theoretical model of air and steam co-injection to prevent the downward migration of DNAPLs during steam-enhanced extraction.

When steam is injected into soil containing a dense volatile non-aqueous phase liquid contaminant the DNAPL vaporized within the heated soil region condenses and accumulates ahead of the steam condensation front. If enough DNAPL accumulates, gravitational forces can overcome trapping forces allowing the liquid contaminant to flow downward. By injecting air with steam, a portion of the DNAPL vapor remains suspended in equilibrium with the air, decreasing liquid contaminant accumulation ahead of the steam condensation front, and thus reducing the possibility of downward migration. In this work,

Skeletal deformities in smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieui, from southern Appalachian reservoirs.

Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) populations in two of five reservoirs sampled in the southern Appalachian Mountains contained high percentages of individuals with lordosis, kyphosis, or scoliosis. Deformities of the vertebral column occurred in several year classes and varied with fish size; they were absent in small fish, present in 25-30% of the fish 241-300 mm long, and then decreased in occurrence with increased length. Because environmental contamination is often responsible for high occurrences of deformed fish, whole-body concentrations of contaminants, bone development characte

Development of aquarium fish models for environmental carcinogenesis: an intermittent-flow exposure system for volatile, hydrophobic chemicals.

An intermittent-flow exposure system was designed to provide stable and manipulative concentrations of volatile and hydrophobic compounds to small aquatic animals for uninterrupted long periods. Test species for 28-day experiments included two aquarium fishes, the Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) and the king cobra guppy (Poecilia reticulata). Test chemicals included trichloroethylene, vinylidene chloride, bis(2-chloroethyl)ether, ethylene dichloride, and a mixture of carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, chloroform, bromodichloromethane, chlorodibromomethane and bromoform. These compounds

Green engineered mulch for phosphorus and metal removal from stormwater runoff in bioretention systems.

Phosphorus and metals in stormwater runoff are major causes of water quality degradation. Bioretention systems are increasingly implemented to improve stormwater quality and to better manage stormwater quantity. Many studies have focused on modifying the composition of the soil bed to improve pollutant removal. However, the pollutant removal performance of bioretention systems can diminish over time, such as when clogging of the media occurs. Sediment accumulation on the soil surface may inhibit infiltration into the soil bed, thus limiting pollutant removal. Soil replacement may be eventually

A review on bismuth-based materials for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants.

Modernized lifestyle and increased industrialization threaten living organisms because of the pollutants released from industries and household wastes. The presence of even small amounts of pollutants (organic pollutants (OPs) and inorganic pollutants-heavy metals (HMs)) shows significant effects. Thus wastewater treatment is urgently needed before being subjected to use. Many methods and materials have been developed and reported for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. This review focused on the removal of both OPs and HMs using bismuth-based (Bi-based) materials because of their low t

Engineering aspects of ferrate in water and wastewater treatment - a review.

There is renewed interest in the tetra-oxy compound of +6 oxidation states of iron, ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)O4(2-)), commonly called ferrate. Ferrate has the potential in cleaner ("greener") technologies for water treatment and remediation processes, as it produces potentially less toxic byproducts than other treatment chemicals (e.g., chlorine). Ferrate has strong potential to oxidize a number of contaminants, including sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds, estrogens, and antibiotics. This oxidation capability of ferrate combines with its efficient disinfection and coagulation properties as a

Effects of tetrachloroethene on the measurement of radon in water with liquid scintillation counting method.

This study investigated the effects of tetrachloroethene (PCE) on radon measurements that employed the liquid scintillation counting (LSC) method referring to 7500-Rn B of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. Laboratory-produced radon-enriched water was used to compare the counting rates of the radon water with and without PCE addition, and groundwater samples from a site contaminated by chlorinated solvents were used to investigate the application of the laboratory experiments. The results showed that the major factor reducing counting efficiency was resulted from the

Controlling harmful cyanobacterial blooms in a world experiencing anthropogenic and climatic-induced change.

Harmful (toxic, food web altering, hypoxia generating) cyanobacterial algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are proliferating world-wide due to anthropogenic nutrient enrichment, and they represent a serious threat to the use and sustainability of our freshwater resources. Traditionally, phosphorus (P) input reductions have been prescribed to control CyanoHABs, because P limitation is widespread and some CyanoHABs can fix atmospheric nitrogen (N(2)) to satisfy their nitrogen (N) requirements. However, eutrophying systems are increasingly plagued with non N(2) fixing CyanoHABs that are N and P co-limited or

Fluoride in the environment and its metabolism in humans.

The presence of environmental fluoride and its impact on human health is well documented. When consumed in adequate quantity, fluoride prevents dental caries, assists in the formation of dental enamels, and prevents deficiencies in bone mineralization. At excessive exposure levels, ingestion of fluoride causes dental fluorosis skeletal fluorosis, and manifestations such as gastrointestinal, neurological, and urinary problems. The distribution of fluoride in the environment is uneven and largely is believed to derive from geogenic causes. The natural sources of fluoride are fluorite, fluorapati

Leachate migration from spent mushroom substrate through intact and repacked subsurface soil columns.

Field weathering of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) produces soluble compost leachate that percolates into underlying soils and may adversely impact groundwater. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate movement and retention of SMS leachate solutes in subsurface soil columns. Spent mushroom substrate leachate with high concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and inorganic salts was passively loaded to intact and repacked columns of Bt1 soil (fine-loamy, mixed, semiactive, mesic Typic Hapludults) and effluents were monitored for changes in chemical composition. Transport of
