Application of a novel, continuous-feeding ultraviolet light emitting diode (UV-LED) system to disinfect domestic wastewater for discharge or agricultural reuse.

In many low-income countries, the poor conditions of sanitation systems have been a significant cause of mortality since they accelerate waterborne disease transmission. Developing sanitation systems in these countries is a pressing concern in both the public and private sectors. This research investigated a decentralized domestic wastewater treatment system using ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs). Although UV-LED disinfection has become more widespread in recent years, it is a novel approach for domestic wastewater treatment. Domestic wastewater was pretreated by a low-cost pretreat

Up-scaling of tannin-based coagulants for wastewater treatment: performance in a water treatment plant.

Tannin extracts from the bark of Acacia mearnsii and wood of Schinopsis balansae, commonly known as Quebracho, were employed. These were modified at laboratory sale via the Mannich aminomethylation with formaldehyde and dimethylamine hydrochloride. Some reaction conditions were varied, namely the formaldehyde dosage and reaction time, while keeping the Mannich solution activation time constant, and their influence on the shear viscosity of the created bio-coagulants was evaluated. The effect of the final pH of the products on their shear viscosity was also analyzed. Up-scaling of the Mannich r

LED light use for the improvement of wastewater treatment in the hydroponic system.

Effective removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from sewage before its discharge to the receiving water body is now a key task for scientists and technologists around the world. The widespread problem of eutrophication in the watercourses as well as in the seas and oceans obliges to take actions leading to more effective protection of water resources and implementation of sustainable development principles. One of the methods of increased wastewater treatment from nutrients is the use of a third stage of treatment with the use of macrophytes for the uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus. These system

A novel antifouling technique for the crossflow filtration using porous membranes: Experimental and CFD investigations of the periodic feed pressure technique.

Oily water production is one of the many drawbacks of petroleum and several other industries. Finding effective ways for the treatment of produced water remain one of the main areas of interest in membrane sciences. Albeit the many advantages of membrane technology, they suffer from the unavoidable problem of fouling, which results from the accumulation of dispersed materials at the surface of membranes. Membrane modification and operational optimization have been approached as a potential cure of the problem of fouling. In this work we introduce a new and novel method that minimizes the devel

Denitrification behavior and microbial community spatial distribution inside woodchip-based solid-phase denitrification (W-SPD) bioreactor for nitrate-contaminated water treatment.

The NO3- removal pathway and microorganisms change along with the height of an up-flow W-SPD bioreactor was investigated in this study. Modeling and microbial community analysis were used to analyze the denitrification behavior in W-SPD bioreactor. The results showed that NO3- removal rate matched for zero-order (R2 > 0.97) and first-order (R2 > 0.94) combination Michaelis-Menten kinetics, whereas microbial reaction rate suited for modified logistic model (R2 > 0.99). The excellent denitrification performance (92.5%-96.4%) and microorganisms' quantity occurred in the middle of W-SPD bioreactor

Reverse Osmosis Shifts Chloramine Speciation Causing Re-Formation of NDMA during Potable Reuse of Wastewater.

UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) effectively degrade N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) passing through reverse osmosis (RO) units within advanced treatment trains for the potable reuse of municipal wastewater. However, certain utilities have observed the re-formation of NDMA after the AOP from reactions between residual chloramines and NDMA precursors in the AOP product water. Using kinetic modeling and bench-scale RO experiments, we demonstrate that the low pH in the RO permeate (∼5.5) coupled with the effective rejection of NH4+ promotes conversion of the residual monochloramine (NH2

Investigations of inorganic and organic fouling behaviors, antifouling and cleaning strategies for pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) membrane using seawater desalination brine and wastewater.

By employing seawater desalination brine (SWBr) and wastewater brine (WWBr) as the feed pair, membrane fouling behaviors as well as antifouling and cleaning strategies for the state-of-the-art thin-film composite polyethersulfone (TFC-PES) hollow fiber membrane have been systematically investigated under pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) operations. Fouling on the polyamide selective layer induced by the SWBr draw solution is relatively mild because of the outstanding membrane rejection and the hydration antifouling layer formed by the permeating water. However, using WWBr as the feed causes fas

Anaerobic removal of 1-methoxy-2-propanol under ambient temperature in an EGSB reactor.

Two laboratory-scale expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors were operated at 18 and 25 °C, respectively, for the treatment of synthetic wastewater composed of ethanol and 1-methoxy-2-propanol (M2P) in a mass ratio of 4:1. Reactors were operated first with continuous wastewater supply and after with discontinuous substrate supply (5 days a week, 16 h a day) to simulate shift working conditions. Under continuous wastewater supply chemical oxygen demand (COD), removal efficiency higher than 95 % was achieved at the end of the trial applying organic loading rates (OLR) of 29 and 43 kg COD m(

Forward osmosis niches in seawater desalination and wastewater reuse.

This review focuses on the present status of forward osmosis (FO) niches in two main areas: seawater desalination and wastewater reuse. Specific applications for desalination and impaired-quality water treatment and reuse are described, as well as the benefits, advantages, challenges, costs and knowledge gaps on FO hybrid systems are discussed. FO can play a role as a bridge to integrate upstream and downstream water treatment processes, to reduce the energy consumption of the entire desalination or water recovery and reuse processes, thus achieving a sustainable solution for the water-energy

Wastewater treatment by soil infiltration: Long-term phosphorus removal.

Phosphorus (P) leaching from on-site wastewater treatment systems may contribute to eutrophication. In developed countries the most common on-site treatment technique is septic systems with soil infiltration. However, the current knowledge about long term P removal in soil treatment systems is not well developed and the data used for estimation of P losses from such systems are unreliable. In this study we sampled four filter beds from community-scale soil treatment systems with an age of between 14 and 22years to determine the long-term P removal and to investigate the chemical mechanisms beh

Locally-calibrated light transmission visualization methods to quantify nonaqueous phase liquid mass in porous media.

Five locally-calibrated light transmission visualization (LTV) methods were tested to quantify nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) mass and mass reduction in porous media. Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) was released into a two-dimensional laboratory flow chamber packed with water-saturated sand which was then flushed with a surfactant solution (2% Tween 80) until all of the PCE had been dissolved. In all the LTV methods employed here, the water phase was dyed, rather than the more common approach of dyeing the NAPL phase, such that the light adsorption characteristics of NAPL did not change as dissoluti

Dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene by palladized iron in the presence of humic acid.

The dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) by palladized irons in the presence of humic acid was investigated to understand the feasibility of using Pd/Fe for the in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater. Untreated zerovalent iron (ZVI) was amended with Pd(II) ions to form palladized irons. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that Pd(II) was completely reduced to metallic Pd on the surface of ZVI. PCE was catalytically dechlorinated via beta-elimination to ethane and ethylene by palladized irons. The carbon mass balances were in the range of 78--98%. The dechlorination followed

On-Site Evaluation of Electropositive Filtration for Fouling Control: Case Study in a Water Reuse Desalination System.

Cartridge filters are used as a prefilter to reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to reduce membrane fouling during operation. However, cartridge filters typically serve as a physical barrier for foulant removal. This study reports a side-by-side comparison of an electropositive filtration (EPF) cartridge (NanoCeram) with a conventional string-wound filtration (SWF) under full-scale operating conditions at the Scottsdale Water Reclamation Facility (Scottsdale Water Campus). A customized two-stage RO test bed operating at 500 gal per day and 25%-40% recovery was used to evaluate the performance of EP

Recovery and Survival of Prototheca Microalgae During Wastewater Treatment Process.

Prototheca are unicellular, non-pigmented, yeast-like microalgae widely distributed in natural and anthropogenic environments. While typically saprophytic, these organisms are the only plant species known to have emerged as opportunistic pathogens for vertebrate animals including humans. The algae have been recognised as ubiquitous inhabitants of domestic and municipal sewage, considered as point sources of Prototheca contamination in natural aquatic systems. These observations, however, have been based on data from a very limited number of historical studies. The purpose of this work was to r

Nanovoids Engineering for Enhancing Separation Performance and Compaction Resistance of Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membranes.

Constructing nanovoids─rapid transport channels for water molecules─is an ideal approach to enhancing the water permeance of polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. However, their variable morphology and inconsistent size usually result in stress concentration and accelerate membrane compaction. In this study, a nanobubble-nanoparticle coupling strategy was utilized to confine the interfacial growth of nanobubbles, with sacrificial ZIF-8 nanoparticles serving as discrete pillars. This approach enabled the successful fabrication of the CO2-0.50/ZIF-8(32) membrane containing uniform, small-siz

Physical and biological fate of protozoan (oo)cysts in slow sand filtration: A review.

Cryptosporidium is a leading cause of waterborne disease globally, in part due to its chlorine-resistant oocysts, low infectious dose, and ability to cause widespread outbreaks. Multiple barriers are employed in drinking water treatment to reduce risks from Cryptosporidium and other pathogens. Slow sand filtration (SSF), a low-carbon drinking water treatment system, has widely varying log removal values (LRVs) (0.09 to >7.2-log; median 2.64-log across published studies). This has been attributed to filter maturity, sand grain size, filter depth, and hydraulic loading rates. Additional enhancem

Insight into the Transport Mechanism of Low-Molecular-Weight Charge-Neutral Organics in Reverse Osmosis: the Critical Role of Molecular Polarity.

Reverse osmosis is extensively applied for desalination, potable water reuse, and ultrapure water production, but suffers from insufficient rejection of charge-neutral organics with low-molecular-weight (<150 Da), whose transport mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, amides and alcohols were identified as the most permeable substances, exhibiting permeation rates 30 to 90 times higher than those of inorganic ions and carboxylic acids. Systematic molecular parameter analysis revealed that molecular polarity, alongside van der Waals volume, determines transport behavior. By incorpo

Elucidating Solvation Effects in Reactive Halogen Species-Initiated Ammonium Oxidation.

Breakpoint chlorination is widely used for ammonium (NH4+) removal in water treatment, yet often requires excess chlorine and is hindered under acidic conditions. The underlying mechanisms of the proton-induced suppression remain elusive. This study demonstrates that NH4+ hydration significantly impacts reactive halogen species (RHS)-initiated oxidation. Our experimental and theoretical analyses revealed that the unique solvation shell of NH4+ features strong hydrogen bonding, which creates a protective barrier that limits oxidant access particularly at acidic pH values. HClO/ClO- was less eff

Dielectric barrier discharge plasma promotes disinfection-residual-bacteria inactivation via electric field and reactive species.

Traditional disinfection processes face significant challenges such as health and ecological risks associated with disinfection-residual-bacteria due to their single mechanism of action. Development of new disinfection processes with composite mechanisms is therefore urgently needed. In this study, we employed liquid ground-electrode dielectric barrier discharge (lgDBD) to achieve synergistic sterilization through electric field electroporation and reactive species oxidation. At a voltage of 12 kV, Pseudomonas fluorescens (ultraviolet and ozone-resistant) and Bacillus subtilis (chlorine-resist

Elevated levels of chloramines and chlorine detected near an indoor sports complex.

Chloramines (NH2Cl, NHCl2, and NCl3) are toxic compounds that can be created during the use of bleach-based disinfectants that contain hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and the hypochlorite ion (OCl-) as their active ingredients. Chloramines can then readily transfer from the aqueous-phase to the gas-phase. Atmospheric chemical ionization mass spectrometry using iodide adduct chemistry (I-CIMS) made observations across two periods (2014 and 2016) at an urban background site on the University of Leicester campus (Leicester, UK). Both monochloramine (NH2Cl) and molecular chlorine (Cl2) were detected and
