Effect of indigestible dietary protein on growth performance and health status of weaned pigs.

Feeding diets containing excess dietary protein (DP) is associated with increased hindgut protein fermentation, often resulting in post-weaning diarrhea. However, the response to DP content has been variable in piglets. The indigestible dietary protein (IDP) content of diets may be more related to negative health and performance outcomes than total DP. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of diet IDP content on performance, immune response, and fecal consistency score (FCS) in newly weaned pigs. Eighty mixed-sex weaned pigs with an average initial body weight of 8.1 ± 0.31 kg…

Accelerated Wean: A Novel 3 Day Berlin Heart Protocol in a Pediatric Patient.

We present the case of a 4 year old child who developed cardiogenic shock due to permanent junctional reciprocating tachycardia, requiring left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support. Despite the initial critical clinical presentation, successful myocardial recovery was achieved over 5 months, allowing for successful LVAD explantation. The patient's young age and behavioral issues were constraining factors for a prolonged LVAD wean trial. A modified wean protocol over a 3 day period with parameters for assessment of cardiac recovery before LVAD explantation is described.

Dietary lysozyme improves growth performance and intestinal barrier function of weaned piglets.

Lysozyme (LZ) is a purely natural, nonpolluting and nonspecific immune factor, which has beneficial effects on the healthy development of animals. In this study, the influences of LZ on the growth performance and intestinal barrier of weaned piglets were studied. A total of 48 weaned piglets (Landrace × Yorkshire, 22 d old) were randomly divided into a control group (basal diet) and a LZ group (0.1% LZ diet) for 19 d. The results showed that LZ could significantly improve the average daily gain (ADG, P < 0.05) and average daily feed intake (ADFI, P < 0.05). LZ also improved the intestinal morp

Effects of Vitamin A on Growth Performance, Antioxidants, Gut Inflammation, and Microbes in Weaned Piglets.

Piglet weaning is an important stage in production where changes in the environment and diet can cause problems such as intestinal inflammation and diarrhea. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient for human and animal growth and has immunomodulatory and inflammatory effects. A large body of literature has previously reported on the use of vitamin A in piglet production, so our experiment added different concentrations of vitamin A (0, 1100, 2200, 4400, 8800, and 17,600 IU/kg) to weaned piglet diets to study the effects of different doses on growth performance, intestinal barrier, inflammation, and…

Multilocus genotyping of Giardia duodenalis in pre-weaned calves with diarrhea in the Republic of Korea.

Giardia duodenalis is a protozoan parasite that infects humans, companion animals, livestock, and wildlife. Infections in cattle caused by this parasite are often asymptomatic, but such infections can cause diarrhea, reduced weight gain, and ill-thrift in young calves. Although G. duodenalis causes diarrhea in calves, only a few studies have been conducted on calves in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Here, we aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of G. duodenalis assemblages in pre-weaned calves with diarrhea in the ROK, identify the association between the occurrence of G. duodenali

Brief pump externalization without ITB wean to treat a probable pocket infection.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Intrathecal baclofen (ITB) pumps are an effective management tool for spasticity and dystonia. In the pediatric population, ITB complications including infection are common, and strategies to minimize their impact are important. Current standard of care for pump infection involves a wean of the ITB therapy followed by explantation of the hardware, which can be a three to 6-month process. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present a 20-year-old female who developed an pump pocket infection after revision. The pump was removed from the body but left connected. The pocket was de

Inulin supplementation induces expression of hypothalamic antioxidant defence genes in weaned piglets.

Fibre plays an important role in diluting dietary energy density. Fibre is also implicated in the regulation of appetite, perhaps through direct effects in the brain. However, there is little information on this effect in pigs. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of fibre type in regulating the expression of genes involved in appetite control, inflammation and antioxidant defence in the hypothalamus of weaned piglets. A total of 64 Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire barrows at 37 days old were blocked by body weight and allotted to two dietary treatments, supplementation wi

Effects of Low-Dose Antibiotics on Gut Immunity and Antibiotic Resistomes in Weaned Piglets.

Widespread antibiotic use increases the risk of livestock acting as potential reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) that may be transferred to human and animal pathogens. Particularly, maternal-infant transmission of antibiotics via breastmilk represents a great concern regarding infant health. In this study, we investigated the effects of 4-week low-dose antibiotic (LDA) treatment on the host immunity and antibiotic resistomes in weaned piglets. Transcriptomic analyses of ileum tissues revealed that the affected genes were largely enriched in innate immunity-related pathways. Si

Distribution and localization of porcine calcium sensing receptor in different tissues of weaned piglets1.

Taste receptors including calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) are expressed in various animal tissues, and CaSR plays important roles in nutrient sensing and the physiology, growth, and development of animals. However, molecular distribution of porcine CaSR (pCaSR) in different tissues, especially along the longitudinal axis of the digestive tract in weaned piglets, is still unknown. In the present study, we investigated the distribution and localization of pCaSR in the different tissues including intestinal segments of weaned piglets. Six male pigs were anesthetized and euthanized. Different tiss
