BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to elucidate whether there is a relationship between the extent of pleural plaques and pulmonary asbes … f dry lung tissue, which is one of the certification criteria of lung cancer caused by asbestos for workers' compensation in Japan.
CONCLUSIONS: In lung cancer patients, the plaque extent had a significant positive relationship with the PABC. The plaque extent would be useful as a proxy for PABC for lung cancer compensation purposes.

The purpose of this single-center study was to evaluate the results of endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTR) by using the dual portal Chow technique in a large series of patients. A total of 2,675 procedures in 1,886 patients were performed during a 13-year period. Follow-up evaluation was performed in 2,402 (90%) cases or 1,698 (90%) patients. Percutaneous automated aspiration discectomy is a new procedure for treating uncomplicated herniated lumbar discs. In a series of 200 patients, followed for up to six months, the overall success rate was 77.5%. Workers' compensation claimants, elderly patients, and patients with previous surgery can be treated successfully using percutaneous discectomy. Patients were treated on an outpatient basis. Patients returned to work significantly sooner after percutaneous discectomy than after microdiscectomy or laminectomy. No intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred.

The IgM globulin response has been measured following the onset of primary Q fever infections. A complement fixation test method was used to measure the IgM after separation by ultracentrifugation in a sucrose density gradient. Specific IgM was demonstrable between 2 and 10 wk after onset of symptoms. The test can be used to confirm a recent infection when only a 'convalescent' blood specimen has been collected and will be useful in the assessment of workers' compensation claims.
