Prevalence of Violence Perpetrated by Healthcare Workers in Long-Term Care: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the prevalence of violence perpetrated by healthcare workers (HCWs) against patients in long-term care (LTC). For this purpose, five relevant databases were searched. Two reviewers extracted data from the included articles independently and assessed their quality. Overall and subgroup random-effects pooled prevalence meta-analyses were performed. A series of meta-analyses stratified by study quality were also performed due to high heterogeneity. Nineteen articles were included, physical restraint (22%; CI: 15-29), verbal abuse (22%; C

Foli's Theory of Psychological Trauma as a Framework For Nursing Research: A critique.

Nurses are regularly exposed to workplace traumatic events, including violence, aggression, witnessing patient deaths, and self-harming behavior and suicide attempts. These experiences can adversely affect nurse well-being and can interrelate with personal histories of trauma. Despite this, psychological trauma in nursing remains underexplored. Foli's mid-range theory of psychological trauma (2022) provides a contemporary framework for addressing this gap by identifying 7 types of psychological trauma in nursing practice while incorporating personal experiences beyond the clinical setting. Explorative thematic qualitative analysis of a UK emergency medical systems staff's experiences, perceptions and interpretations of violence and aggression directed towards them.

BACKGROUND: Emergency medical services (EMS) staff worldwide have long been at risk of encountering violence and aggression (V&A) at work, including threats, verbal, physical and sexual assault, and on rare occasions, fatalities occur. Exposure to V&A can result in stress, fear and burnout. This is an international problem and EMS employers, trade unions and others are working towards tackling it. The aim of this research was to conduct an exploratory qualitative interview study of EMS staff focusing on experiences, perceptions and interpretations of V&A directed towards them. METHODS: This s

Balance, Health, and Workplace Safety: Experiences of New Nurses in the Context of Total Worker Health.

Transitioning into independent professional practice may be a difficult and trying process for newly licensed nurses, who may be at risk for burnout and quitting their jobs. Issues related to new nurses' well-being at work may also impact their personal lives. Using thematic analysis within the framework of Total Worker Health, this study examined factors related to the overall work, safety, and health of newly licensed nurses that should be addressed in work environments to promote well-being and prevent burnout and attrition. The main component of Total Worker Health is to find and understan

The role of poor sleep in the relation between workplace bullying/unwanted sexual attention and long-term sickness absence.

PURPOSE: While exposure to bullying and unwanted sexual attention was previously found to increase the risk of sickness absence, the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Poor sleep can be a consequence of stressful exposures and a cause of poor health, and poor sleep is also a determinant of insufficient recovery. Therefore, the present study investigated whether poor sleep mediates and/or moderates the association between bullying and unwanted sexual attention, on the one hand, and long-term sickness absence (LTSA), on the other hand. METHODS: We used questionnaire data from 7650 indiv

Workplace bullying in nursing: towards a more critical organisational perspective.

Workplace bullying is a significant issue confronting the nursing profession. Bullying in nursing is frequently described in terms of 'oppressed group' behaviour or 'horizontal violence'. It is proposed that the use of 'oppressed group' behaviour theory has fostered only a partial understanding of the phenomenon in nursing. It is suggested that the continued use of 'oppressed group' behaviour as the major means for understanding bullying in nursing places a flawed emphasis on bullying as a phenomenon that exists only among nurses, rather than considering it within the broader organisational co

Lifting the 'violence veil': examining working conditions in long-term care facilities using iterative mixed methods.

We conducted a mixed-methods study-- the focus of this article--to understand how workers in long-term care facilities experienced working conditions. We surveyed unionized care workers in Ontario (n = 917); we also surveyed workers in three Canadian provinces (n = 948) and four Scandinavian countries (n = 1,625). In post-survey focus groups, we presented respondents with survey questions and descriptive statistical findings, and asked them: "Does this reflect your experience?" Workers reported time pressures and the frequency of experiences of physical violence and unwanted sexual attention,

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders among gig-based food delivery workers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The digital economy has spurred gig work, especially in food delivery, which grew during COVID-19. However, gig workers face occupational hazards like traffic accidents, poor ergonomics, and unsafe conditions, leading to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Studies show high rates of back and neck pain among delivery riders due to physical strain, repetitive motions, and long hours. WMSDs reduce productivity and increase healthcare costs. This review examines WMSD prevalence, risk factors, and related issues like accidents and violence among food delivery workers. METHO

Uninvestigated fatal workplace injuries in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 5000 people are killed by an injury at work every year, but the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) only investigates 25%-35% of these deaths. The aim of this study was to identify industry, geographic, and worker demographic disparities in the proportion of fatal workplace injuries that are investigated by OSHA. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis drew from 2 years of public data (2014-2015) from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries and investigation data from OSHA. Differences by worker age and sex, geographic region, industry, and Sta

Understanding bullying in healthcare organisations.

Bullying is a pervasive problem in healthcare organisations. Inquiries and reports on patient care and poor practice in the NHS have emphasised the substantial negative effects this behaviour may have on patient care. If bullying is to be addressed, it is crucial we develop clarity about what behaviours constitute bullying and how these behaviours differ from other negative behaviours in the workplace. It is important that we recognise the extent of the problem; statistics on the prevalence of bullying are likely to be an underestimate because of under-reporting of bullying. Effective interven

Violence and Public and Personal Health: Gun Violence.

The rate of death due to guns is higher in the United States than in other high-income countries. More than 200 Americans are murdered or assaulted with a firearm daily. In the United States, more than 300,000 individuals have died from firearm injuries in the past decade. Firearm injuries cost more than $3 billion per year, and deaths from guns cause more than $20 billion in lifetime work loss and medical costs. Risk factors for being a perpetrator of gun violence include a personal history of or exposure to individuals with violent tendencies, untreated mental disorders, substance abuse, and

Hazardous alcohol use and intimate partner violence in the military: understanding protective factors.

Hazardous alcohol use is a well-established risk factor for men's intimate partner violence (IPV), with dozens of studies demonstrating the association. The current study extends understanding of the hazardous alcohol use-IPV link by examining what factors moderate this association in a more systematic and broader way that has been done in past studies. Individual, family, workplace, community, and developmental factors were tested as moderators of the hazardous alcohol use and IPV link in a large, representative sample of active duty service members (the 2006 Community Assessment), and the re
