The use of topical salicylate-containing creams and ointments is widespread. A case is presented which implicates the use of one such cream (Aspercreme) as a potential cause of platelet coagulopathy after rhytidectomy.

Groups of five male and five female New Zealand albino rabbits were treated by skin application with either 0 (distilled water control), 30, 150 or 450 mg/kg undiluted trichlorobenzene (ICB) for 5 days/week for four weeks. Topical application of a single dose of 1.0 mg prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) onto the cornea of five trained owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus) caused a prolonged and highly significant ocular hypotony. The intraocular pressure (IOP) of the treated eye was 4.7 +/- 0.9 mm Hg below that of the control eye 18 to 24 hr after PGF2 alpha application and remained significantly reduced for over 72 hr. The effect of Solcoseryl Eye Jelly (a protein-free extract from blood of young calves) was studied in 202 cases of corneal diseases of various etiology. It had an accelerating action on the reepithelization of the cornea after alkali burns, inflammations, injuries (foreign body and contact lenses and in keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The stability of the precorneal film was increased. The tendency toward symblepharon formation after alkali burns was considerably reduced.

Topical application of 5% testosterone cream for 21 days resulted in enlargement of the penis to normal size for age in five boys with normal XY karyotype who had microphallus and hypopituitarism. In age-, race-, and sex-matched groups, the relative abilities of medrysone, fluorometholone, and dexamethasone phosphate to elevate intraocular pressure were compared in a masked manner. Compliance was controlled by drops being given by nursing personnel. The 18 male hospitalized volunteers received commercial preparations of one of the corticosteroids to each eye four times a day for six weeks. The relative ability of medrysone, fluorometholone, and dexamethasone phosphate to raise IOP was 1, 4, and 7.6, respectively.

Certain corticosteroids, including fluorometholone, have been reported to have a low propensity for elevating intraocular pressure. Our clinical impression was that the incidence of IOP increase with fluorometholone may be higher than reported. Although there have been reports of the results of treating trichomoniasis with metronidazole 2 g in a single dose, no randomised double-blind comparison of this treatment with a multiple-dose regimen has been reported. In such a comparison, 96 women were treated with metronidazole 2 g in a single dose and 96 women with metronidazole 400 mg twice daily for five days. A review is presented of the different treatment regimens of levamisole used in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A large double-blind EULAR multicentre trial has shown that the beneficial effects obtained with continuous (150 mg per day) and with intermittent (3 days per week, 150 mg) treatment are comparable in RA. Two patients with a clinical picture identical to idiopathic ocular cicatricial pemphigoid had received long-term (six to nine years) echothiophate iodide treatment for control of glaucoma in the affected eyes after cataract extraction. Basement membrane zone staining for IgG was seen in the conjunctiva of one affected eye.
