[ESSENCE gathers the diagnoses into a whole].

Co-existence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, tic disorders, developmental coordination disorder, language disorder, learning problems, and autism spectrum disorder and sharing of symptoms across disorders, contribute to the typical clinical presentation in child psychiatry as well as in developmen-tal medicine. The acronym ESSENCE refers to Early Symptomatic Syndromes Eliciting Neurodevelopmental Clinical Examinations. Affected children are brought for clinical assessment because of impairing symptoms that raise concern before the age of about 5 year

Project DyAdd: classical eyeblink conditioning in adults with dyslexia and ADHD.

In this study of the project DyAdd (Adult Dyslexia and Attention Deficit Disorder in Finland), classical eyeblink conditioning (EBC) was investigated in both delay and trace paradigms in adults (18-55 years) with dyslexia (n = 37), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 21), their comorbid combination (n = 8), and healthy controls (n = 35). In addition, the profiles of three participants with a rare autosomal dominant cerebellar disease were assessed (episodic ataxia type 2, EA-2). We found that participants with dyslexia were overall slower learners than controls in eyeblink cond

Amphetamine-type stimulants in young adults with ADHD: effects on sleep, circadian rhythms, and neuropsychiatric outcomes.

Amphetamine-type stimulants are widely prescribed for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and are commonly used by college-aged individuals. While effective for improving attention and executive function, these medications may also influence sleep and circadian regulation. College students are particularly vulnerable to sleep disturbances because young adulthood is characterized by a biologically delayed circadian phase that favors later sleep timing. Combined with academic and social demands and nighttime light exposure, as well as the high prevalence of delayed c

Movements during sleep correlate with impaired attention and verbal and memory skills in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy suspected of having obstructive sleep disordered breathing.

BACKGROUND: Children with obstructive sleep disordered breathing (OSDB) have both impaired cognitive performance and frequent movements during sleep. It is not known whether movements during sleep are related to cognitive function. METHODS: We studied 56 children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy suspected of having OSDB with actigraphy for six consecutive days and nights, followed by cognitive and performance tests. Attended polysomnography was performed on the seventh night. RESULTS: Slower reaction time correlated with both higher sum of all movements during Time in Bed (r(2)=0.19, p=0.001)

Foveal crowding and segmentation effects in adults with ADHD.

This study investigated foveal crowding and segmentation effects in adults with Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) compared to neurotypical controls. While visual crowding, the impaired identification of targets surrounded by flanking elements, has been extensively studied in peripheral vision across various populations, its manifestation in central (foveal) vision among adults with ADHD remains insufficiently studied. 45 participants (22 ADHD, 23 controls) completed a computerized visual task involving identification of the direction of a central target letter ("E") under crowde

ADHD desynchronizes brain activity during watching a distracted multi-talker conversation.

Individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have difficulties navigating dynamic everyday situations that contain multiple sensory inputs that need to either be attended to or ignored. As conventional experimental tasks lack this type of everyday complexity, we administered a film-based multi-talker condition with auditory distractors in the background. ADHD-related aberrant brain responses to this naturalistic stimulus were identified using intersubject correlations (ISCs) in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data collected from 51 adults with ADHD and 29 healt

Psychosocial outcome and psychiatric comorbidity in older adolescents with Tourette syndrome: controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Children with Tourette syndrome generally experience improvement of tics by age 18 years, but psychosocial and comorbidity outcomes at this age are unclear. AIMS: To compare psychosocial outcomes and lifetime comorbidity rates in older adolescents with Tourette syndrome and controls. We hypothesised a priori that individuals with Tourette syndrome would have lower Children's Global Assessment Scale (CGAS) scores. METHOD: A total of 65 individuals with Tourette syndrome, identified in childhood, and 65 matched community controls without tic or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) s

Discontinuation and reinitiation of pharmacological treatment for ADHD among individuals with ADHD and substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorder (SUD) often coexist. ADHD complicates the course of disease in SUD. While recommended in guidelines, ADHD medication for those with comorbid SUD remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore how comorbid SUD affects ADHD medication discontinuation and reinitiation in individuals with ADHD. METHODS: Using a matched cohort design, we identified 9283 individuals with ADHD and SUD in Sweden between 2006 and 2020, who had ongoing ADHD medication at the time of their first SUD-related event. Lead exposure and risk of ADHD and conduct disorders in children: evidence from a retrospective cohort in Philadelphia, PA.

BACKGROUND: Childhood lead exposure remains a significant public health concern, particularly in urban settings with persistent socioeconomic disadvantage. Although prior studies have linked lead exposure to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, evidence using clinically diagnosed neurobehavioral disorders at contemporary low blood lead levels (BLLs) is limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of children aged 11 years or younger who received care through the Temple University Health System in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, between 2010 and 2020. BLLs were obtained from electro

Functional connectivity patterns differ as a function of co-occurring attentional problems in preschoolers with autism.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and are associated with greater developmental challenges, poorer clinical outcomes, and alterations in functional connectivity (FC) of the brain. However, despite the consensus that ASD and other neurodevelopmental conditions emerge early in life, little is known about the trajectories of brain and behavioral development during the first years of life in children with ASD and co-occurring attention problems (AP). METHODS: In a sample of 122 young children (ages 1

Atopic Dermatitis: Disease Background and Risk Factors.

Multiple risk factors have been associated with the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). Recent advances in understanding the role of genetics in this disease have been made, with discovery of the filaggrin (FLG) gene as the most notable so far. In addition to FLG gene mutations as a risk factor for AD, a positive family history of atopic or allergic disease in either parent has been shown to confer a greater risk of developing AD. Atopic dermatitis usually presents early in life and is thought to represent the initial step in the "atopic march," which is characterized by the development of

Associations of asthma and psychiatric comorbidities on suicide mortality among community adolescents: A 20-year cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The role of psychiatric comorbidity as a confounder between asthma and subsequent suicide mortality in adolescents remained unclarified. METHODS: This study used a 20-year community-based cohort in Taiwan. Adolescents aged 11 to 16 from 123 schools were classified into three subgroups: current asthma (symptoms present in the past year), previous asthma (history of asthma but no symptoms in the past year), and no asthma. The mortality and medical care utilizations until the end of follow-up in 2015 were obtained. Cox proportional hazard and competing risk models were performed. Dif

Inhibitory Control Deficits in Children with Tic Disorders Revealed by Object-Hit-and-Avoid Task.

BACKGROUND: Tic disorders may reflect impaired inhibitory control. This has been evaluated using different behavioural tasks, yielding mixed results. Our objective was to test inhibitory control in children with tics through simultaneous presentation of multiple, mobile stimuli. METHODS: Sixty-four children with tics (mean age 12.4 years; 7.5-18.5) were evaluated using a validated robotic bimanual exoskeleton protocol (Kinarm) in an object-hit-and-avoid task, in which target and distractor objects moved across a screen and participants aimed to hit only the targets while avoiding distractors.

Examining Psychopathic Traits in Children Using the Child Psychopathy Scale - Revised.

Applying the affective dimension of psychopathy to youth has advanced understanding of conduct problems in youth, leading to suggestions that other aspects of psychopathy may do the same. This was addressed in the present study by examining the structure and validity of psychopathic traits in elementary-age children as rated by mothers and teachers on the Child Psychopathy Scale - Revised (CPS-R). Participants were 222 children (80.2% male; Mage = 8.92), the majority (71.6%) of whom met criteria for both ADHD and conduct problems. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a four-factor model cons

ADHD symptom profiles, intermittent explosive disorder, adverse childhood experiences, and internalizing/externalizing problems in young offenders.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and co-existing psychiatric/psychological impairments as well as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common among young offenders. Research on their associations is of major importance for early intervention and crime prevention. Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) warrants specific consideration in this regard. To gain sophisticated insights into the occurrence and associations of ADHD, IED, ACEs, and further psychiatric/psychological impairments in young (male and female) offenders, we used latent profile analysis (LPA) to empirically de
