Effect of HIV Status and Charlson Comorbidity Index on COVID-19 Clinical Outcomes in a Case-Control Study.

OBJECTIVES: During the course of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, numerous comorbidities were identified as risk factors for increased morbidity and mortality. Few studies have examined human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and COVID-19 co-infection and the impact of HIV on COVID-19 outcomes. In this study, we compared outcomes of people living with HIV with COVID-19 with a control group to examine outcomes. METHODS: We identified 45 people living with HIV admitted with COVID-19 to one of three large healthcare systems in Memphis, Tennessee, between March 1 and October 31, 2020.

The Conundrum of "Pair Sites" in Langmuir-Hinshelwood Reaction Kinetics in Heterogeneous Catalysis.

Understanding reaction kinetics is crucial for designing and applying heterogeneous catalytic processes in chemical and energy conversion. Here, we revisit the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) kinetic model for bimolecular surface reactions, originally formulated for metal catalysts, assuming immobile adsorbates on neighboring pair sites, with the rate varying linearly with the density of surface sites (sites per unit area); r ∝ [*]o 1. Supported metal oxide catalysts, however, offer systematic control over [*]o through variation of the active two-dimensional metal oxide loading in the submonolayer

Interarm systolic blood pressure difference is associated with left ventricular concentricity and concentric remodeling.

OBJECTIVE: Interarm systolic blood pressure difference (IASD) values >15 mmHg (IASD > 15) are associated with increased cardiovascular risk, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This report evaluated whether IASD >15, assessed by different protocols [sequential or simultaneous; based on one or several blood pressure (BP) readings], was associated with adverse left ventricular (LV) remodeling. METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated 605 individuals who underwent clinical and echocardiography evaluation and three pairs of simultaneous arm BP readings. IASD was estimated by seven

Applying the win ratio method in clinical trials of orphan drugs: an analysis of data from the COMET trial of avalglucosidase alfa in patients with late-onset Pompe disease.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials for rare diseases often include multiple endpoints that capture the effects of treatment on different disease domains. In many rare diseases, the primary endpoint is not standardized across trials. The win ratio approach was designed to analyze multiple endpoints of interest in clinical trials and has mostly been applied in cardiovascular trials. Here, we applied the win ratio approach to data from COMET, a phase 3 trial in late-onset Pompe disease, to illustrate how this approach can be used to analyze multiple endpoints in the orphan drug context. METHODS: All po

Differential tumor protein expression at follicular lymphoma diagnosis reveals dysregulation of key molecular pathways associated with histological transformation.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the most common low-grade lymphoma. Despite its indolent nature, FL carries an inherent risk of histological transformation (HT) to a more aggressive lymphoma. Existing biomarkers are insufficient to predict HT, indicating the need for more robust biological predictors. Previously, we used mass spectrometry-based proteomics to identify differentially expressed proteins in diagnostic FLs with and without subsequent HT. This study sought to further investigate identified proteins in transformation of FL, generally acting in important cellular pathways such as (i) apop

Burden of disease in Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome: taking the patient's perspective.

BACKGROUND: Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is an autoimmune-mediated neuromuscular disorder leading to muscle weakness, autonomic dysregulation and hyporeflexia. Psychosocial well-being is affected. Previously, we assessed burden of disease for Myasthenia gravis (MG). Here, we aim to elucidate burden of disease by comparing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with LEMS to the general population (genP) as well as MG patients. METHODS: A questionnaire-based survey included sociodemographic and clinical data along with standardized questionnaires, e.g. the Short Form Hea

A significant proportion of classic Hodgkin lymphoma recurrences represents clonally unrelated second primary lymphoma.

Despite high cure rates in classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL), relapses are observed. Whether relapsed cHL represents second primary lymphoma or an underlying T-cell lymphoma (TCL) mimicking cHL is underinvestigated. To analyze the nature of cHL recurrences, in-depth clonality testing of immunoglobulin (Ig) and T-cell receptor (TCR) rearrangements was performed in paired cHL diagnoses and recurrences among 60 patients, supported by targeted mutation analysis of lymphoma-associated genes. Clonal Ig rearrangements were detected by next-generation sequencing (NGS) in 69 of 120 (58%) diagnoses and rec

A gene-based association test of interactions for maternal-fetal genotypes identifies genes associated with nonsyndromic congenital heart defects.

The risk of congenital heart defects (CHDs) may be influenced by maternal genes, fetal genes, and their interactions. Existing methods commonly test the effects of maternal and fetal variants one-at-a-time and may have reduced statistical power to detect genetic variants with low minor allele frequencies. In this article, we propose a gene-based association test of interactions for maternal-fetal genotypes (GATI-MFG) using a case-mother and control-mother design. GATI-MFG can integrate the effects of multiple variants within a gene or genomic region and evaluate the joint effect of maternal an

Utility of Differential Time to Positivity in Diagnosing Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Differential time to positivity (DTP), defined as pathogen growth at least 2 hours earlier from catheter versus paired peripheral blood cultures, is sometimes used to diagnose central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). Previous studies assessing DTP, however, have been small, provided conflicting results, and did not assess heterogeneity across important subgroups. METHODS: We systematically reviewed the diagnostic characteristics of DTP for CLABSI using MEDLINE, Embase, WoS, CINAHL, LILACS, AMED, and the Cochrane database. Studies were included if they reported sen
