RATIONALE: Galeazzi fractures are uncommon, and are less common in children than in adults. Galeazzi-equivalent fractures, a variant of the classic Galeazzi fractures, mostly occur in children or adolescents. Galeazzi equivalent fractures may commonly accompany distal radial fractures or injury of the epiphyseal plate of the distal ulna.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 13-year-old man visited our emergency department after stumbling over a rock. Manual reduction and splinting was already done in a nearby medical center. Plain radiographs revealed fractures in the distal radius and fracture of the ulnar e

BACKGROUND: A major drawback to use of cortical bone trajectory pedicle screws (CBTPSs) with traditional posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion grafts is that traditional graft insertion trajectories require wider posterior exposure. This wider exposure, beyond the limits otherwise required for CBTPS placement, negates a primary benefit of CBTPS fixation. The aim of this study was to define an alternative surgical technique for interbody graft placement that, when used in conjunction with CBTPS fixation, permits both minimal soft tissue dissection a

INTRODUCTION: The use of resorbable plates increases for craniosynostosis surgery. This material, based on polymere (PLA, PGA) can replace steel wire and non resorbable plates. A few studies present surgical results about the use of this material with a long follow-up. We present our ten years experience of using resorbable material for craniosynostosis treatment in children.
METHODS: Between 2002 and 2012, we operated 283 craniosynostosis (98 scaphocephalies, 55 trigonocephalies, 79 plagiocephalies et 51 craniofaciostenoses). Among these surgeries, 211 were realized with resorbable material

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the epidemiology, treatment, and complications of frontal bone fractures associated, or not, with other facial fractures. This evaluation also sought to minimize the influence of the surgeon's skills and the preference for any rigid internal fixation system. The files from 3758 patients who attended the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the School of Dentistry of Ribeirao Preto, University of Sao Paulo, from March 2004 to November 2011 and presented with facial trauma were scanned, and 52 files were chosen for the review. Using an autogenous bone graft (obtained from the iliac crest), 4-mm cancellous bone screws, and polymethylmethacrylate, a distracted cervical spinal fusion technique was performed on 10 dogs with myelographic evidence of caudal cervical spondylomyelopathy. All dogs had evidence of dynamic soft tissue spinal cord compression, as indicated by flexion, extension, and traction myelographic views. Of the 10 dogs, 4 previously had undergone surgery by use of ventral slot or cervical disk fenestration techniques, and their neurologic status had deteriorated after the original surgery. Preoperative n…

Open clavicle fractures are rare, accounting for only 1.8% of all fractures. This report describes a 37 year old male with an open Gustilo Anderson grade II midshaft clavicle fracture (Robinson type 2B1) caused by a wood cutting machine. He was hemodynamically stable but had an 8*6 cm wound with exposed clavicle. Initial emergency care included tetanus prophylaxis, intravenous antibiotics, and wound debridement. Definitive fixation was performed on day four using an 8 hole anatomical locking plate with screws. Postoperatively, progressive physiotherapy led to uneventful wound healing and good

In August 2004, the US Food and Drug Administration approved a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)-based injectable medical device for restoration and/or correction of the signs of facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) in people with human immunodeficiency virus. As a result, the properties of the PLLA microparticles have received considerable interest from the medical community. Polylactides have a long-standing history of safe use in medical applications, such as pins, plates, screws, intra-bone and soft-tissue implants, and as vectors for sustained release of bioactive compounds. The L-isomer of polylactic a

From 1993 to 2003, 6 patients with displaced fractures of the humeral capitellum were treated by open reduction and internal fixation of the capitellar fragments with Herbert bone screws. By use of the criteria of Grantham et al, there were 2 type II-A fractures, 1 type II-B fracture, 1 type II-C fracture, and 2 type III-A fractures. A lateral approach was used in 4 patients and a posterior approach with olecranon osteotomy in 2. The elbows were immobilized postoperatively for 4 to 28 days (mean, 13.5 days). We evaluated the range of motion, stability, and pain using the criteria of Grantham e…

Failure of manipulative reduction of acute anterior dislocation of the shoulder is extremely rare. A 55-year-old man dislocated his right shoulder when he fell heavily. Initial radiographs and computed tomographs demonstrated an anterior dislocation with fracture of the glenoid rim. Several attempts at closed reduction were unsuccessful. At the time of open reduction, the cause of failure was found to be interposition of a fragment of the anterior inferior glenoid rim in the joint. To prevent redislocation, the fragment was held in place by two Herbert mini bone screws after anatomic reduction…

In orthognathic surgery, the bone fragments are usually fixed with metallic plates and screws. Metallic devices other than titanium plates are usually removed after the osteotomy has consolidated, which often requires general anaesthesia. Titanium plates, supposed to be biotolerable, have been introduced in order to overcome this need for secondary intervention. However, due to corrosion, titanium particles have been found in scar tissue covering these plates and in locoregional lymph nodes. Therefore, their removal is also advocated. Self-reinforced poly (L-lactide) homopolymer (PLLA) and pol

UNLABELLED: Metatarsal fractures are one of the most common injuries of the foot, accounting for approximately 5% to 6% of all fractures confronted in the outpatient setting1. Approximately 45% to 70% of these fractures involve the fifth metatarsal, which have been described using a 3 zonal approach in 1993 by Lawrence and Botte2. Zone 2 fractures are difficult to manage given their retrograde vascular supply, leading to higher rates of nonunion1,3. Jones fractures (zone 2) are primarily treated surgically, with the 2 main methods being intramedullary screw fixation and plate fixation3. Surgic

INTRODUCTION: The management of acetabulum fractures in osteoporotic elderly, as well as comminuted fractures in younger patients is likely to be difficult. These fractures need specific fixation techniques especially when the quadrilateral plate is involved. Standard implants may not be able to adequately support the fixation, so newer pre-shaped fixation plates have been proposed with some of these already in use. The concept of anatomic plates has come up for many fracture locations for providing a better buttress effect to the comminuted fragments. There has been a need to look for an anat

OBJECTIVE: Femoral neck fracture (FNF) is a common type of hip fracture, for which cannulated screw fixation is a primary internal fixation method. The optimal configuration for cannulated screw fixation remains controversial, with debate primarily focused on two approaches: parallel fixation configuration (PFC) versus non-parallel fixation configuration (NFC). The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of two configurations in the treatment of femoral neck fractures.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library,

INTRODUCTION: Odontoid fractures (OFs) are one of the most common fractures of the upper cervical spine, estimated to represent 9-15% of all cervical fractures. Although their relative frequency, its optimal management is still debated. When surgery is required, anterior odontoid screw fixation (AOSF) offers several advantages, such as preservation of neck rotation, reduced surgical risk, and shorter hospital stay. However, only well-selected patients are eligible for this procedure, and an accurate interpretation of imaging as well as an optimal surgical timing should be taken into account to

PURPOSE: This study aims to assess the biomechanical performance of the 7.3 mm fully threaded off-axis screw (7.3-FTOS) configuration in stabilizing vertical femoral neck fractures (FNSs), comparing its effectiveness with other fixation methods.
METHODS: A vertical FNF model with an 80° Pauwels angle was simulated and stabilized using four internal fixation constructs: Three inverted cannulated compression screws (ICCS), 7.3 mm partially threaded off-axis screw (7.3-PTOS), 4.5 mm fully threaded off-axis screw (4.5-FTOS), and 7.3-FTOS. The fracture fixation models were developed, refined, and

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a commonly used surgical technique for treating degenerative and traumatic conditions of the cervical spine. However, late-onset implant extrusions following this procedure are extremely rare but can lead to serious complications. In this case report, we present a 78-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with a sole complaint of hemoptysis, 16 years after undergoing ACDF surgery, and was found to have spontaneously expelled a screw through his mouth. Imaging studies revealed the anterior migration and pharyngeal extrusion of t

Miniscrews are temporary skeletal anchorage devices that are widely used in orthodontic treatment, and their success depends on the placement area, angle, technique, and screw dimensions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of miniscrew lengths, insertion angles, and force directions on a mandible model consisting of teeth, cortical and cancellous bones. One Dental Volumetric Tomography (DVT) scan from a patient who had miniscrews were used for mandibular bone modeling to perform finite element analysis. The model variables included miniscrew lengths (6, 8, and 10 mm), insertion angles

Tibial tubercle avulsion fractures (TTAFs) are rare but typical in children and adolescents and Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) may be involved in their pathogenesis. However, few publications have reported the relationship between OSD and TTAF. A 16-year-old healthy male adolescent presented with pain, swelling and limited range of motion of the right knee following sudden acceleration while running. Based on the radiographic evidence, the patient was diagnosed with an avulsion fracture of the right tibial tubercle and OSD. Open reduction and internal fixation were performed using two cannulat
