Increase in Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections after ending COVID-19 lockdown measures in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: Various European countries noted increasing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) positivity among cis-gender women and heterosexual men. We assessed changes over time in Ng among men who exclusively have sex with men (MSM), men who exclusively have sex with women (MSW), men who have sex with men and women (MSMW), women and transgender and gender diverse people (TGP). METHODS: We analysed data collected between 2018 and 2023 at the Centre for Sexual Health, Amsterdam. We modelled temporal changes in Ng positivity rates (ie, number of positive results per 100 tests) using relative risk regress

Gender-transformative HIV and SRHR programme approaches for adolescents and young people: a realist review to inform policy and programmes.

INTRODUCTION: Gender inequalities continue to drive new HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at rates too high to achieve global goals. In high HIV-burden jurisdictions, this is particularly true for adolescent girls and young women at disproportionate risk, while social and systemic barriers also impede the engagement of young men and gender minorities with health services. We sought evidence of approaches to promote sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes by addressing gender transformation and removing structural barriers that broadly limit prospects for adolescents and youn

Prevalence and Factors Associated with HIV Sero-Discordance among In-Union HIV Patients Receiving Care in a Private Health Facility in Jos, North Central, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: The burden of HIV infection in households of people living with HIV (PLHIV) is usually high. The existence of HIV discordance and reasons for that is largely unknown. Moreover, how people in a discordant relationship can live happily together with negative partner not getting infected and/or safely have children are not well understood. This study is to determine the prevalence and factors associated with HIV sero-discordance among in-union HIV patients receiving care in a private health facility in Jos, north central Nigeria. METHODS: A descriptive cross sectional design was us

Magnitude of Self-Reported Syndromes of Sexually Transmitted Infections and Its Associated Factors Among Young Incarcerated Persons (18-29 Years) in Correctional Facilities of Gamo Gofa Zone, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection is an infection that is typically transmitted by sexual contact and may either end or develop into a sexually transmitted disease. Today, young people are recognized as groups with special health-related vulnerabilities like drug use, unprotected sex and sexually transmitted infections. Despitea number of strategies which focused on young people's health, there was limited evidence of sexually transmitted infection among young incarcerated persons. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the self-reported syndromes of sexually transmitted infections

An examination of physical violence against women and its justification in development settings in Uganda.

This paper uses data from a community cross-sectional survey to examine the factors that are associated with justification of physical violence against women. Results indicate that respondents who were married at the time of the survey were less likely (OR = 0.29; CI = 0.17-0.52) to agree that it is justified for a man to physically assault his partner that their counterparts who were single. The likelihood to justify physical violence was less likely to happen among respondents with primary education (OR = 0.49; CI = 0.39-0.62), secondary education (OR = 0.40; CI = 0.31-0.53) and vocation or

Attitudes towards abortion in male and female adolescents with diverse sexual and pregnancy experiences: a cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: Background Research focused on adolescents' attitudes towards abortion is limited, and validated scales are not routinely used. A greater understanding of adolescents' attitudes towards abortion could better inform the sexuality education strategies targeted at this age group. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was completed by 1470 adolescents (437 males, 1033 females) aged 12-19 years and living in Perth, Australia. Participants were recruited from secondary schools, antenatal clinics and termination clinics to capture varying experiences of sexual activity and pregnancy. Survey

Importance of early identification of PrEP breakthrough infections in a generalized HIV epidemic: a case report from a PrEP demonstration project in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organisation recommends the use of tenofovir-containing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as an additional Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention choice for men and women at substantial risk of HIV infection. PrEP could fill an important HIV prevention gap, especially for sexually active young women who are limited in their ability to negotiate mutual monogamy or condom use. As PrEP is scaled up in high HIV incidence settings, it is crucial to consider the importance of early identification of HIV infection during PrEP use, to allow for rapid discontinuation o

Low willingness to pay for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended as an HIV prevention strategy for key populations, in particular men who have sex with men (MSM). However, the willingness to pay market rate for PrEP is largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the willingness to pay for PrEP and its associated factors among MSM living in Mainland China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 689 MSM who were recruited through a gay-friendly health consulting service center in Chengdu, China during 2018-2019. We collected information on participants' willingness to pay for PrEP

Incident gonorrhoea and chlamydia among a prospective cohort of men who have sex with men in Kisumu, Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: STIs disproportionately affect men who have sex with men (MSM) in sub-Saharan Africa. We identified factors associated with incident Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infections among MSM in the Anza Mapema cohort study in Kisumu, Kenya. METHODS: We enrolled 711 MSM who underwent HIV testing and counselling, medical history and examination, and collection of demographic and behavioural information. They also provided urine and rectal swab specimens for CT and NG testing by qualitative PCR at baseline and at months 6 and 12. Separate multivariable Cox regress

Gendered syndemic of intimate partner violence, alcohol misuse, and HIV risk among peri-urban, heterosexual men in South Africa.

Men whose sexual behaviors place them at risk of HIV often exhibit a "cluster" of behaviors, including alcohol misuse and violence against women. Called the "Substance Abuse, Violence and AIDS (SAVA) syndemic," this intersecting set of issues is poorly understood among heterosexual men in sub-Saharan Africa. We aim to determine cross-sectional associations between men's use of alcohol, violence, and HIV risk behaviors using a gendered syndemics lens. We conducted a baseline survey with men in an informal, peri-urban settlement near Johannesburg (Jan-Aug 2016). Audio-assisted, self-completed qu
