Systematic dermatovenorological examination included 457 mentally retarded children and adolescents institutionalized at the Institute for Mental Rehabilitation of Children and Adolescents "Novi Sad" in Veternik near Novi Sad. The study comprised 40 children of both sexes aged from 2 to 12 years, 22 suffering from bronchial asthma and 18 suffering from atopic dermatitis. Gastric mucosal histology and function were evaluated in 57 Italian subjects with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH), by means of multiple endoscopic biopsies, gastrin and pepsinogen I (Pg I) serum levels, and parietal cell antibodies (PCA). One hundred and forty-nine patients with nonulcer dyspepsia served as reference population for the prevalence of atrophic gastritis of the body. This review summarizes current knowledge of the pathophysiological events which lie behind the development of contact dermatitis. The clinical distinction between allergic and irritant eczema is discussed. New observations are evaluated on our understanding of how allergic and irritant eczema may in many respects be similar, evolving through common physiological pathways of immune inflammation.

Three patients are reported with allergic reactions to rosin in eye makeup: two to eyeshadow and one to mascara. In each instance, the dermatitis was bilateral and symmetrical. Several popular eyeshadow and mascara preparations contain rosin, while the Almay products are free of this ingredient. Rosin-sensitive patients should be instructed to read cosmetic ingredient labels before using any product and should realize that the European term "colophony" is a synonym for rosin. The numerous products that rosin-sensitive persons must avoid will be discussed in a future article.

The results of 55 4-h hydrocortisone absorption tests in 38 children with atopic or seborrhoeic dermatitis were analysed to evaluate the effect of age and severity of the dermatitis on percutaneous absorption of hydrocortisone. A case of malignant somatostatinoma is reported in a patient with long-standing dermatitis herpetiformis and coeliac disease. The patient had non-specific abdominal pain of several years duration and came to attention because of weight loss despite strict adherence to a gluten-free diet. Fifteen infants with seborrheic dermatitis were treated with topical glucocorticosteroids (flumethasone pivalate 0.02%). Early morning plasma cortisol levels were determined prior to treatment, during the 10-day treatment period, and 2 days after its termination.
