Role of magnesium and calcium in alcohol-induced hypertension and strokes as probed by in vivo television microscopy, digital image microscopy, optical spectroscopy, 31P-NMR, spectroscopy and a unique magnesium ion-selective electrode.

It is not known why alcohol ingestion poses a risk for development of hypertension, stroke and sudden death. Of all drugs, which result in body depletion of magnesium (Mg), alcohol is now known to be the most notorious cause of Mg-wasting. Recent data obtained through the use of biophysical (and noninvasive) technology suggest that alcohol may induce hypertension, stroke, and sudden death via its effects on intracellular free Mg2+ ([Mg2+]i), which in turn alter cellular and subcellular bioenergetics and promote calcium ion (Ca2+) overload. Evidence is reviewed that demonstrates that the dietar

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

"Old and new" frontiers in embryo viability assessment: current practices and introduction of emerging approaches.

Reliable assessment of embryo viability remains a critical yet challenging component of assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Traditional methods, including morphological grading and preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), are either subjective, invasive, or resource intensive. Consequently, non-invasive approaches, including analysis of spent culture medium (SCM) and digital image-based analytical methods, emerged as promising alternatives to support clinical decision-making, though their reliability varies. SCM analyses can detect embryonic DNA and metabolites, but their

Mechanical-medical convergence in heart failure: Artificial intelligence, finite-element modeling, and 3D printing for diagnosis and prognosis.

Heart failure remains a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, yet routine clinical indices often miss the regional biomechanical disturbances that drive progression and shape treatment response. This State-of-the-Art review examines how finite-element (FE) modeling, additive manufacturing, and artificial intelligence (AI) are converging to improve the diagnosis, phenotyping, procedural planning, and prognostic assessment of heart failure (HF). Although these technologies have matured in structural heart disease and transcatheter intervention research, their greatest translational po

Beyond the germ: Rethinking implant-related infections as a host-microbiota-biomaterial ecosystem.

Implant-related infections remain one of the most challenging complications in modern medicine, often leading to implant failure, revision surgery, significant patient morbidity and high rate of patient mortality. Traditionally framed within the germ theory paradigm, their pathogenesis has been attributed primarily to microbial contamination and biofilm formation. However, growing evidence reveals a far more complex picture in which infection susceptibility emerges from the dynamic interplay between host biology, microbiota composition, biomaterial properties, and environmental influences . Fluid-based biomarkers of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: recent advances and future prospects.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder with no definitive cure. The absence of specific diagnostic biomarkers leads to diagnostic delays, hindering early intervention and management. This review provides a critical appraisal of fluid-based biomarkers for ALS across multiple sources-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood, urine, saliva, and tears-with emphasis on their diagnostic and prognostic potential, limitations, and readiness for clinical translation. While neurofilaments (NfL, pNfH) are well-established as sensitive indicators of neuroaxonal injury and

Harnessing large language models in virtual CBT for university students' academic anxiety: a preliminary randomized trial.

Academic anxiety is a common mental health problem among university students. It is often associated with reduced learning efficiency and an increased risk of depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is supported by an established evidence base, but its use in university settings is still limited by factors such as therapist availability, time, and physical space. To explore a new approach to digitally assisted intervention, this study integrated virtual reality (VR), large language model (LLM), and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technologies. We developed an LLM-VR-CBT system base

Advances in functional nanomaterials and piezoelectric biomaterials for personalized intramedullary fixation: addressing age-related orthopedic challenges.

Femoral fractures represent a major global orthopedic burden, particularly among elderly and osteoporotic populations, and are associated with substantial morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Intramedullary fixation, in which a metallic nail is inserted into the medullary canal to stabilize fractured bone, remains the clinical gold standard because it provides load-sharing stabilization through a minimally invasive approach. Nevertheless, implant-bone mismatch, cortical impingement, fixation instability, infection, and delayed osseointegration continue to compromise long-term outcomes o
