The classical picture of middle ear (ME) transmission has the tympanic membrane (TM) as a piston and the ME cavity as a vacuum. In reality, the TM moves in a complex multiphasic pattern and substantial pressure is radiated into the ME cavity by the motion of the TM. Due to the lack of objective examination method, the diagnosis of Meniere's disease mainly relies on subjective symptoms. MRI of the inner ear after gadolinium injections had become a new technology in otology in recent years. The image can clearly distinguish perilymph from endolymph in the labyrinth and can be applied to the imaging diagnosis, evaluation of treatment and the pathogenesis research of Meniere's disease. This article is a review of the development and the application in clinical research of this new technology.

We report here beneficial effects of life-long dietary restriction on the progression of age-associated cochlear degeneration in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Thirty-month old rats on a 70% dietary restriction were compared to ad libitum fed age-matched rats, and three-month old adult rats. As expected, aged dietary restricted rats displayed about 20% higher survival rate than age-matched rats fed ad libitum. This difference was reflected also in the auditory system. Chronic inflammation of the middle ear is a common disease in which the mobility of the middle ear ossicles may be reduced; resulting in hearing impairment. Knowledge of the degree of ossicular mobility is useful in helping a surgeon determine how to proceed with treatment. The objective of the present work was to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment of the patients presenting with diffuse external otitis media with the application of Kombinil-Duo ear drops. The authors carried out a comparative study using Kombinil-Duo ear drops (n=30) and traditional methods (n=25). The study has demonstrated the advantages of the complication of Kombinil-Duo ear drops that allows to more rapidly eliminate such symptoms of diffuse external otitis media as otalgia, ear congestion, hyperemia, and skin infiltration in the external auditory canal.
